Occurrence of the Old World bug Megacopta cribraria (Fabricius) (Heteroptera: Plataspidae) in Georgia: a serious home invader and potential legume pest
Specimens of Megacopta cribraria (Fabricius) were collected in northern Georgia in late October 2009, where they were invading homes in large numbers. This is the first known occurrence of this species and the family Plataspidae in the New World. Megacopta cribraria was previously known from Asia and Australia. A key is provided to separate Plataspidae from other families of Pentatomoidea in America North of Mexico. A diagnosis and figures are provided to facilitate recognition of M. cribraria. Reported host plants and other aspects of the biology of this species are reviewed. Megacopta cribraria is considered a pest of numerous legumes in Asia, has the potential to provide biological control of kudzu, Pueraria montana var. lobata (Willd.) Ohwi, (Fabaceae) and likely will continue to be a household pest in the vicinity of kudzu fields as well as become a pest of North American legume crops
Motivation Matters: Understanding the Antidepressant Mechanism of Physical Activity among Young Adults
International Journal of Exercise Science 17(5): 861-873, 2024. A negative association between physical activity and depressive symptoms is consistently reported within scientific literature and physical self-concept has been suggested to mediate this pathway. However, for whom these associations are strongest remains poorly understood, and little is known about how other psychosocial factors might be implicated. Consequently, we examined how various exercise motivations, specifically appearance, physical health, and mental health, might moderate the indirect effect of physical activity on depressive symptoms through physical self-concept. Canadian young adults (N = 496, Mage = 20.36, SD = 1.87) completed an online questionnaire. Mediation and moderated-mediation models were tested using PROCESS macro in RStudio. A significant indirect effect (ß = -0.18, CI [-0.005, -0.003]) of physical activity on depressive symptoms through physical self-concept was found. Exercise motivations moderated the association between physical activity and physical self-concept, such that the association was stronger when individuals were motivated by physical health. Thus, the effect of physical activity on depressive symptoms varied according to physical self-concept and physical health-exercise motivations. We conclude that motivation should be considered when developing and delivering physical activity prevention efforts for depressive symptoms
Guaranteed clustering and biclustering via semidefinite programming
Identifying clusters of similar objects in data plays a significant role in a
wide range of applications. As a model problem for clustering, we consider the
densest k-disjoint-clique problem, whose goal is to identify the collection of
k disjoint cliques of a given weighted complete graph maximizing the sum of the
densities of the complete subgraphs induced by these cliques. In this paper, we
establish conditions ensuring exact recovery of the densest k cliques of a
given graph from the optimal solution of a particular semidefinite program. In
particular, the semidefinite relaxation is exact for input graphs corresponding
to data consisting of k large, distinct clusters and a smaller number of
outliers. This approach also yields a semidefinite relaxation for the
biclustering problem with similar recovery guarantees. Given a set of objects
and a set of features exhibited by these objects, biclustering seeks to
simultaneously group the objects and features according to their expression
levels. This problem may be posed as partitioning the nodes of a weighted
bipartite complete graph such that the sum of the densities of the resulting
bipartite complete subgraphs is maximized. As in our analysis of the densest
k-disjoint-clique problem, we show that the correct partition of the objects
and features can be recovered from the optimal solution of a semidefinite
program in the case that the given data consists of several disjoint sets of
objects exhibiting similar features. Empirical evidence from numerical
experiments supporting these theoretical guarantees is also provided
Amantadine hydrochloride in the treatment of parkinsonism: A placebo-controlled double-blind study
This report covers a review of the literature and a description of a double-blind placebo-controlled trial, of 200 mg of amantadine hydrochloride daily in the treatment of 23 parkinsonian patients. Statistical analysis of clinical results showed a significant improvement in rigidity and tremor at rest and a fair improvement in initiating movements and alertness. Subjective mood elevation was not confirmed by statistical analysis. Gait, voice control, jaw tremor and salivation showed no statistical improvement, while eye convergence may be adversely affected. Side-effects were minimal. Amantadine hydrochloride (Symmetrel, Geigy) appears to have real value in the treatment of parkinsonism
Quadratic associations between empathy and depression and the moderating influence of dysregulation
Empathic tendencies have been associated with interpersonal and psychological benefits, but empathy at extreme levels or in combination with certain personal characteristics may contribute to risk for depression. This study tested the moderating role of cognitive emotion regulation in depression’s association with empathy using nonlinear models. Young adults (N=304; 77% female; M=19 years) completed measures of cognitive emotion regulation strategies, depression, and affective and cognitive empathy. Individuals with good regulation had low levels of depression overall and their depression symptoms were lowest when levels of affective empathy were average. Individuals with poor regulation had high levels of depression overall, particularly when levels of empathy were moderate to high. Extremely high and low levels of cognitive empathy were associated with elevated depression, and this association was not moderated by regulation. These findings suggest tendencies to respond empathically to others’ needs is neither an adaptive nor maladaptive characteristic but rather moderate empathy, particularly in the context of good regulation, may offer the greatest protection against depression
Role of material properties and mesostructure on dynamic deformation and shear instability in Al-W granular composites
Dynamic experiments with Al-W granular/porous composites revealed
qualitatively different behavior with respect to shear localization depending
on bonding between Al particles. Two-dimensional numerical modeling was used to
explore the mesomechanics of the large strain dynamic deformation in Al-W
granular/porous composites and explain the experimentally observed differences
in shear localization between composites with various mesostructures.
Specifically, the bonding between the Al particles, the porosity, the roles of
the relative particle sizes of Al and W, the arrangements of the W particles,
and the material properties of Al were investigated using numerical
calculations. It was demonstrated in simulations that the bonding between the
"soft" Al particles facilitated shear localization as seen in the experiments.
Numerical calculations and experiments revealed that the mechanism of the shear
localization in granular composites is mainly due to the local high strain flow
of "soft" Al around the "rigid" W particles causing localized damage
accumulation and subsequent growth of the meso/macro shear bands/cracks. The
"rigid" W particles were the major geometrical factor determining the
initiation and propagation of "kinked" shear bands in the matrix of "soft" Al
particles, leaving some areas free of extensive plastic deformation as observed

Interplay of chiral and helical states in a Quantum Spin Hall Insulator lateral junction
We study the electronic transport across an electrostatically-gated lateral
junction in a HgTe quantum well, a canonical 2D topological insulator, with and
without applied magnetic field. We control carrier density inside and outside a
junction region independently and hence tune the number and nature of 1D edge
modes propagating in each of those regions. Outside the 2D gap, magnetic field
drives the system to the quantum Hall regime, and chiral states propagate at
the edge. In this regime, we observe fractional plateaus which reflect the
equilibration between 1D chiral modes across the junction. As carrier density
approaches zero in the central region and at moderate fields, we observe
oscillations in resistance that we attribute to Fabry-Perot interference in the
helical states, enabled by the broken time reversal symmetry. At higher fields,
those oscillations disappear, in agreement with the expected absence of helical

Academic achievement : the role of praise in motivating students
The motivation of students is an important issue in higher education, particularly in the context of the increasing diversity of student populations. A social-cognitive perspective assumes motivation to be dynamic, context-sensitive and changeable, thereby rendering it to be a much more differentiated construct than previously understood. This complexity may be perplexing to tutors who are keen to develop applications to improve academic achievement. One application that is within the control of the tutor, at least to some extent, is the use of praise. Using psychological literature the article argues that in motivating students, the tutor is not well served by relying on simplistic and common sense understandings of the construct of praise and that effective applications of praise are mediated by students' goal orientations, which of themselves may be either additive or interactive composites of different objectives and different contexts
Conservation laws of semidiscrete canonical Hamiltonian equations
There are many evolution partial differential equations which can be cast
into Hamiltonian form. Conservation laws of these equations are related to
one-parameter Hamiltonian symmetries admitted by the PDEs. The same result
holds for semidiscrete Hamiltonian equations. In this paper we consider
semidiscrete canonical Hamiltonian equations. Using symmetries, we find
conservation laws for the semidiscretized nonlinear wave equation and
