    Electron-beam propagation in a two-dimensional electron gas

    A quantum mechanical model based on a Green's function approach has been used to calculate the transmission probability of electrons traversing a two-dimensional electron gas injected and detected via mode-selective quantum point contacts. Two-dimensional scattering potentials, back-scattering, and temperature effects were included in order to compare the calculated results with experimentally observed interference patterns. The results yield detailed information about the distribution, size, and the energetic height of the scattering potentials.Comment: 7 pages, 6 figure

    Probing the potential landscape inside a two-dimensional electron-gas

    We report direct observations of the scattering potentials in a two-dimensional electron-gas using electron-beam diffaction-experiments. The diffracting objects are local density-fluctuations caused by the spatial and charge-state distribution of the donors in the GaAs-(Al,Ga)As heterostructures. The scatterers can be manipulated externally by sample illumination, or by cooling the sample down under depleted conditions.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

    Seasonal Changes in Titan's Southern Stratosphere

    In August 2009 Titan passed through northern spring equinox, and the southern hemisphere passed into fall. Since then, the moon's atmosphere has been closely watched for evidence of the expected seasonal reversal of stratospheric circulation, with increased northern insolation leading to upwelling, and consequent downwelling at southern high latitudes. If the southern winter mirrors the northern winter, this circulation will be traced by increases in short-lived gas species advected downwards from the upper atmosphere to the stratosphere. The Cassini spacecraft in orbit around Saturn carries on board the Composite Infrared Spectrometer (CIRS), which has been actively monitoring the trace gas populations through measurement of the intensity of their infrared emission bands (7-1000 micron). In this presentation we will show fresh evidence from recent CIRS measurements in June 2012, that the shortest-lived and least abundant minor species (C3H4, C4H2, C6H6, HC3N) are indeed increasing dramatically southwards of 50S in the lower stratosphere. Intriguingly, the more stable gases (C2H2, HCN, CO2) have yet to show this trend, and continue to exhibit their 'summer' abundances, decreasing towards the south pole. Possible chemical and dynamical explanations of these results will be discussed , along with the potential of future CIRS measurements to monitor and elucidate these seasonal changes

    Electron impact ionization of 1-butanol: I. Mass spectra and partial ionization cross sections

    Experimental measurements of the cations created through electron impact ionization have been undertaken for the primary isomer of butanol, using a Hiden Quadrupole Mass Spectrometer (EPIC 300) with a mass resolution of 1 amu. The mass spectrum recorded at an incident electron energy of 70 eV, normalized and placed on an absolute scale, reveals the relative probability of forming 76 different cations of butanol by either direct ionization or dissociative ionization. Individual partial ionization cross sections (PICS) for the 38 main cationic fragments, measured at electron energies in the range 10-100 eV, are also reported for the first time in this work

    Titan's cold case files - Outstanding questions after Cassini-Huygens

    The entry of the Cassini-Huygens spacecraft into orbit around Saturn in July 2004 marked the start of a golden era in the exploration of Titan, Saturn's giant moon. During the Prime Mission (2004–2008), ground-breaking discoveries were made by the Cassini orbiter including the equatorial dune fields (flyby T3, 2005), northern lakes and seas (T16, 2006), and the large positive and negative ions (T16 &amp; T18, 2006), to name a few. In 2005 the Huygens probe descended through Titan's atmosphere, taking the first close-up pictures of the surface, including large networks of dendritic channels leading to a dried-up seabed, and also obtaining detailed profiles of temperature and gas composition during the atmospheric descent. The discoveries continued through the Equinox Mission (2008–2010) and Solstice Mission (2010–2017) totaling 127 targeted flybys of Titan in all. Now at the end of the mission, we are able to look back on the high-level scientific questions from the start of the mission, and assess the progress that has been made towards answering these. At the same time, new scientific questions regarding Titan have emerged from the discoveries that have been made. In this paper we review a cross-section of important scientific questions that remain partially or completely unanswered, ranging from Titan's deep interior to the exosphere. Our intention is to help formulate the science goals for the next generation of planetary missions to Titan, and to stimulate new experimental, observational and theoretical investigations in the interim

    Electron impact ionization of 1-butanol: II. Total ionization cross sections and appearance energies

    Experimental and theoretical data on total ionization cross sections for electron scattering by 1-butanol molecules in the energy range 10-100 eV are report in this work. The experimental data were obtained from the addition of partial ionization cross sections (PICS) of 38 cationic fragments registered using a Hiden Analytical quadrupole mass spectrometer (EPIC 300), which are reported in a companion paper (Pires et al., 2018). The theoretical data were generated using the Binary-Encounter-Bethe and independent atom model plus screening corrected additivity rule approaches. Additionally, we also report the appearance energies (AEs) and Wannier exponents for 36 of the 38 main cationic fragments observed in our experiments. Our experimental TICS data are typically found to be in good agreement with our theoretical results, and with other experimental and theoretical TICS data of 1-butanol currently available in the literature. Agreement of our AEs and the previous data, again where a comparison is possible, is also found to be satisfactory

This paper reviews the drivers of change in the industry and explores how creative advertising agencies are evolving and developing their team resources to improve the creative product using the resource based view (RBV) as a theoretical lens. The study adopted a qualitative approach using a key informant strategy with 16 interviews with Creative Directors, CEO’s and Heads of Planning and Account Directors. The findings suggest that agencies who embrace team functional diversity, include external stakeholders and develop team fluidity as a dynamic capability will enhance agency creativity

    Thirty Years After Michael E. Porter: What Do We Know About Business Exit?

    Although a business exit is an important corporate change initiative, the buyer’s side seems to be more appealing to management researchers than the seller’s because acquisitions imply growth, i.e., success. Yet from an optimistic viewpoint, business exit can effectively create value for the selling company. In this paper we attempt to bring the relevance of the seller’s side back into our consciousness by asking: What do we know about business exit? We start our exploration with Porter (1976), focusing on literature that investigates the antecedents of, barriers to, and outcomes of business exit. We also include studies from related fields such as finance and economics.1 Through this research we determine three clusters of findings: factors promoting business exit, exit barriers, and exit outcomes. Overall, it is the intention of this paper to highlight the importance of business exit for research and practice. Knowing what we know about business exits and their high financial value we should bear in mind that exit need not mean failure but a new beginning for a corporation
