Effect of La Doping on Microstructure and Critical Current Density of MgB2

In the present study, La-doped MgB_2 superconductors with different doping level (Mg1-xLaxB2; x=0.00, 0.01, 0.03 & 0.05) have been synthesized by solid-state reaction route at ambient pressure. Effect of La doping have been investigated in relation to microstructural characteristics and superconducting properties, particularly intragrain critical current density (Jc). The microstructural characteristics of the as synthesized Mg(La)B2 compounds were studied employing transmission electron microscopic (TEM) technique. The TEM investigations reveal inclusion of LaB6 nanoparticles within the MgB2 grains which provide effective flux pinning centres. The evaluation of intragrain Jc through magnetic measurements on the fine powdered version of the as synthesized samples reveal that Jc of the samples change significantly with the doping level. The optimum result on Jc is obtained for Mg0.97La0.03B2 at 5K, the Jc reaches ~1.4x107A/cm2 in self field, ~2.1 x 106A/cm2 at 1T, ~2.5 x 105A/cm2 at 2.5T and ~1.8 x 104 A/cm2 at 4.5T. The highest value of intragrain Jc in Mg0.97La0.03B2 superconductor has been attributed to the inclusion of LaB6 nanoparticles which are capable of providing effective flux pinning centres

Statistical Mechanics of DNA Rupture: Theory and Simulations

We study the effects of the shear force on the rupture mechanism on a double stranded DNA. Motivated by recent experiments, we perform the atomistic simulations with explicit solvent to obtain the distributions of extension in hydrogen and covalent bonds below the rupture force. We obtain a significant difference between the atomistic simulations and the existing results in the iterature based on the coarse-grained models (theory and simulations). We discuss the possible reasons and improve the coarse-grained model by incorporating the consequences of semi-microscopic details of the nucleotides in its description. The distributions obtained by the modified model (simulations and theoretical) are qualitatively similar to the one obtained using atomistic simulations.Comment: 18 pages, 9 figures. Accepted in J. Force induced triple point for interacting polymers

    Get PDF
We show the existence of a force induced triple point in an interacting polymer problem that allows two zero-force thermal phase transitions. The phase diagrams for three different models of mutually attracting but self avoiding polymers are presented. One of these models has an intermediate phase and it shows a triple point but not the others. A general phase diagram with multicritical points in an extended parameter space is also discussed.Comment: 4 pages, 8 figures, revtex

Attenuation of amiodarone induced lung fibrosis and phospholipidosis in hamsters, by treatment with the platelet activating factor receptor antagonist, WEB 2086

Therapeutic use of amiodarone (AMD), a Class III antiarrhythmic drug is complicated by the development of lung fibrosis (LF) and phospholipidosis (PL). In the present study, the effectiveness of a PAF antagonist, WEB 2086, against AMD induced LF and PL has been tested in hamsters. The animals were randomly divided into four groups: (1) saline + H2O; (2) WEB + H2O; (3) saline + AMD; and (4) WEB + AMD. Saline or WEB (10 mg/kg i.p.) was given 2 days prior to intratracheal instillation of water or AMD (1.5 μmol/0.25 ml/100 g BW) and thereafter daily throughout the study. Twenty-eight days after intratracheal instillation, the animals were killed and the lungs processed for various assays. The amount of lung hydroxyproline, an index of LF, in saline + H2O, WEB + H2O, saline + AMD, and WEB + AMD groups were 959 ± 46, 1035 ± 51, 1605 ± 85 and 1374 ± 69 μg/lung, respectively. Total lung PL, an index of phospholipidosis, in the corresponding groups were 8.4 ± 0.4, 8.3 ± 0.3, 11.7 ± 0.3 and 9.9 μg/lung. Lung malondialdehyde, an index of lipid peroxidation and superoxide dismutase activity in saline + H2O WEB + H2O, saline + AMD, and WEB + AMD were 93.0 ± 4.3, 93.0 ± 2.7, 138.9 ± 6.0 and 109.0 ± 3.8 nmol/lung and 359.7 ± 13.9, 394.0 ± 22.8, 497.5 ± 19.7 and 425.5 ± 4.9 units/lung, respectively. Administration of AMD alone caused significant increases in all the above indexes of lung toxicity, and treatment with WEB 2086 minimized the AMD induced toxicity as reflected by significant decreases in these indexes. Histopathological studies revealed a marked reduction in the extent and severity of lung lesions in the WEB + AMD group compared with the saline + AMD group. Treatment with WEB 2086 also reduced the acute mortality from 35% in saline + AMD group to 22% in WEB + AMD group. It was concluded that PAF is involved in the AMD induced lung fibrosis and phospholipidosis and that the PAF receptor antagonist may, therefore, be potentially useful in reducing AMD induced lung toxicity

Possibility of extracting the weak phase γ\gamma from Λb→ΛD0\Lambda_b \to \Lambda D^0 decays

We explore the possibility of extracting the weak phase γ\gamma from pure tree decays Λb→Λ(D0,D0ˉ,DCP0)\Lambda_b \to \Lambda (D^0, \bar{D^0}, D^0_{CP}) in a model independent way. The CP violating weak phase γ\gamma can be determined cleanly, without any hadronic uncertainties, as these decay modes are free from the penguin pollutions. Furthermore, neither tagging nor time dependent studies are required to extract the angle γ\gamma with these modes.Comment: 12 pages, LaTex, Minor changes in the text, version to appear in Phys. Effects of Eye-phase in DNA unzipping

The onset of an "eye-phase" and its role during the DNA unzipping is studied when a force is applied to the interior of the chain. The directionality of the hydrogen bond introduced here shows oscillations in force-extension curve similar to a "saw-tooth" kind of oscillations seen in the protein unfolding experiments. The effects of intermediates (hairpins) and stacking energies on the melting profile have also been discussed.Comment: RevTeX v4, 9 pages with 7 eps figure
