Achieving accurate FTIR measurements on high performance bandpass filters
The sources of ordinate error in FTIR spectrometers are reviewed with reference to measuring small out-of-band features in the spectra of bandpass filters. Procedures for identifying instrumental artefacts are described. It is shown that features well below 0.01%T can be measured reliably
Edifying the body while building the edifice
To help congregations more fully address the interface between confessional/theological self-understanding and building programs, a framework is developed that identifies three foci of concern. These call for and shape an \u27Architectural Brief/Educational Agenda\u27 for a congregation\u27s building program. A model/example of a Brief/Agenda within the Lutheran tradition is presented. The article concludes with a framework of activities to be incorporated into the educational dimension of any church building project

Selective Laser Sintering of Passive Dynamic Ankle-Foot Orthoses
Passive dynamic ankle-foot orthoses (AFOâs) are used to improve gait performance in
those with various neuromuscular disorders. An important design characteristic of passive
dynamic AFOs is the storage and release of elastic energy within its structure to help satisfy the
energetic demands of walking. Thus, minimizing energy dissipation through internal friction is a
fundamental criterion for selecting the appropriate AFO material. This study compared the
mechanical damping of a carbon-fiber AFO to three geometrically identical AFOâs fabricated
using selective laser sintering with different materials. Mechanical damping characteristics
ranked the materials as Nylon 11 (best), followed by DuraformTM PA and DuraformTM GF

Hydroxyurea-induced synchronisation of bloodstream stage Trypanosoma brucei
Synchronisation of the <i>Trypanosoma brucei</i> cell cycle proved elusive for many years. A recent report demonstrated that synchronisation of procyclic form cells was possible following treatment with hydroxyurea. Here, that work is extended to the disease-relevant, mammalian-infective bloodstream stage trypanosome. Treatment of bloodstream stage Lister 427 <i>T. Brucei</i> cells growing <i>in vitro</i> with 10 ÎŒg ml<sup>â1</sup> hydroxyurea for 6 h led to an enrichment of cells in S phase. Following removal of the drug, cells proceeded uniformly through one round of the cell cycle, providing a much needed tool to enrich for specific cell cycle stages, in a manner similar to hydroxyurea treatment of procyclic form <i>T. brucei.</i>
Commutator methods for unitary operators
We present an improved version of commutator methods for unitary operators
under a weak regularity condition. Once applied to a unitary operator, the
method typically leads to the absence of singularly continuous spectrum and to
the local finiteness of point spectrum. Large families of locally smooth
operators are also exhibited. Half of the paper is dedicated to applications,
and a special emphasize is put on the study of cocycles over irrational
rotations. It is apparently the first time that commutator methods are applied
in the context of rotation algebras, for the study of their generators.Comment: 15 page
PESTICIDE TAX, CROPPING PATTERNS, AND WATER QUALITY IN SOUTH CENTRAL TEXAS
The impact of an ad valorem pesticide tax on cropping patterns and pesticide use was examined in the South Central Texas Crop Reporting District. Output supply equations were econometrically estimated and used in the simulation. A 25 percent tax on pesticide was estimated to have major impacts on cropping patterns and on pesticide use. Assuming other input and output prices were unaffected, the supply of one important crop would fall by more than half. Demand for some of the highly soluble and persistent pesticides, which present the greatest threat to groundwater quality, would also decrease substantially (some as much as 50 percent).Crops, Dual model, Pesticides, Water quality, Supply, Crop Production/Industries,
Eroding ribbon thermocouples: impulse response and transient heat flux analysis
We have investigated a particular type of fast-response surface thermocouple to determine if it is appropriate to use a one dimensional transient heat conduction model to derive the transient surface heat flux from the measurements of surface temperature. With these sensors, low thermal inertia thermocouple junctions are formed near the surface by abrasive wear. Using laser excitation, we obtained the impulse response of these commercially available devices. The response of particular sensors can vary if new junctions are created by abrasive wear. Furthermore, the response of these sensors was found to deviate substantially from the one dimensional model and varied from sensor to sensor. The impulse response was simulated with greater fidelity using a two dimensional finite element model, but three dimensional effects also appear to be significant. The impact of these variations on the derived heat flux is assessed for the case of measurements in an internal combustion engine. When the measured impulse response is used to derive the surface heat flux, the apparent reversal of heat flux during the expansion stroke does not occur
An Analytical Method for Detecting Toxic Metal Cations Using Cyclotriveratrylene Derivative Capped Gold Nanoparticles
Cyclotriveratrylene-oxime (CTV-oxime) derivatives that terminate with a dithiolate linker were synthesized enabling the supramolecular scaffold to adhere to gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) with the bowl-shaped cavity of the CTV scaffold exposed for utilization in hostâguest chemistry. Exposure of these CTV functionalized AuNPs to varying concentrations of di- and trivalent metal cations resulted in the formation of large CTV-AuNP polymeric clusters and an accompanying a shift in the plasmon resonance. These interactions between the CTV-AuNPs and the metal cations in solution provides proof-of-concept that supramolecular functionalized AuNPs can be used as a simple and straightforward, on-site detection system for toxic metal cations in solution. Use of capillary electrophoresis as a method development tool for classical gel electrophoresis
Capillary electrophoresis (CE) was used to optimize the
buffer pH, ionic strength and sulfated cyclodextrin
concentrations for enantiomeric separation of piperoxan.
These enantioseparation conditions were then applied to a
classical gel electrophoresis system. Binding constants of
the sulfated beta-cyclodextrinâpiperoxan couple were
approximated using CE and the effects of organic solvents
on the system were also investigated
