Nighttime ion composition measurements at the geomagnetic equator
Two ion composition profiles, representative of the nighttime equatorial ionosphere between 90 km and 300 km, are presented. These profiles were obtained by two rocket-borne ion mass spectrometers on a single night for solar zenith angles of 112 deg and 165 deg. For both flights, the principal ion above 200 km is O(+). The downward drift of the atomic ions O(+) and N(+), coinciding with the postsunset lowering of the F2 peak, is observed through an enhancement of the density of O(+) at altitudes above 200 km and N(+) above 240 km. Below the drift region, O(+) and N(+) are observed in concentrations larger than expected. The NO(+) altitude distribution retains its shape throughout the night, and below 210 km, is the principal ion. The behavior of O2(+) can be explained by the O(+), electron density and theoretical neutral nitric oxide concentrations. Light metallic ions, including Mg(+), Na(+), and possibly Si(+), are observed to altitudes approaching 300 km and are affected by vertical drift

Loop Variable Inequalities in Gravity and Gauge Theory
We point out an incompleteness of formulations of gravitational and gauge
theories that use traces of holonomies around closed curves as their basic
variables. It is shown that in general such loop variables have to satisfy
certain inequalities if they are to give a description equivalent to the usual

Ion composition and drift observations in the nighttime equatorial ionosphere
The first in situ measurements of ion composition in the nighttime equatorial E and F region ionospheres (90-300 km) are presented and discussed. These profiles were obtained by two rocket-borne ion mass spectrometers launched from Thumba, India on March 9-10, 1970 at solar zenith angles of 112 deg and 165 deg. Ionosonde data established that the composition was measured at times bounding a period of F region downward drift. During this period the ions O(+) and N(+) were enhanced by one to three orders of magnitude between 220 and 300 km. Below the drift region (200 km), O(+) ceased to be the major ionic constituent, but the concentrations of O(+) and N(+) remained larger than predicted from known radiation sources and loss processes. Here also, both the O2(+) and NO(+) profiles retained nearly the same shape and magnitude throughout the night in agreement with theories assuming scattered UV radiation to be the maintaining source. Light metallic ions including Mg(+), Na(+) and possibly Si(+) were observed to altitude approaching 300 km, while the heavier ions Ca(+) and K(+) were seen in reduced quantity to 200 km. An Empirical Study of Finding Approximate Equilibria in Bimatrix Games
While there have been a number of studies about the efficacy of methods to
find exact Nash equilibria in bimatrix games, there has been little empirical
work on finding approximate Nash equilibria. Here we provide such a study that
compares a number of approximation methods and exact methods. In particular, we
explore the trade-off between the quality of approximate equilibrium and the
required running time to find one. We found that the existing library GAMUT,
which has been the de facto standard that has been used to test exact methods,
is insufficient as a test bed for approximation methods since many of its games
have pure equilibria or other easy-to-find good approximate equilibria. We
extend the breadth and depth of our study by including new interesting families
of bimatrix games, and studying bimatrix games upto size .
Finally, we provide new close-to-worst-case examples for the best-performing
algorithms for finding approximate Nash equilibria
Equatorial X-rays and their effect on the lower mesosphere
On the night of May 23/24, 1975, a sequence of rocket and balloon experiments was launched from Chilca Base, Peru (12.5 deg S, 76.8 deg W, magnetic dip = - 0.7 deg). Detailed analysis and comparisons of the data yielded the first direct measurement of lower mesospheric response to a galactic X-ray source. This result could only have been determined at the equator, where cosmic ray background effects are minimal. The objective of the experiments was to seek out the equatorial energetic electron belt, sporadically reported to contain fluxes near auroral levels, measure the bremsstrahlung radiation produced by this particle belt, and determine the influence of this radiation on the middle atmosphere. High altitude rocket payloads (Nike Tomahawk 18.170 and 18.171) were launched to probe the thermosphere during and following the anticipated downward drift period. Each carried an on-axis X-ray scintillation detector and Geiger Mueller energetic electron detectors. Magnetometers and lunar sensors were used to determine payload aspect
The Goldberg-Sachs theorem in linearized gravity
The Goldberg-Sachs theorem has been very useful in constructing algebraically
special exact solutions of Einstein vacuum equation. Most of the physical
meaningful vacuum exact solutions are algebraically special. We show that the
Goldberg-Sachs theorem is not true in linearized gravity. This is a remarkable
result, which gives light on the understanding of the physical meaning of the

General relativity on a null surface: Hamiltonian formulation in the teleparallel geometry
The Hamiltonian formulation of general relativity on a null surface is
established in the teleparallel geometry. No particular gauge conditons on the
tetrads are imposed, such as the time gauge condition. By means of a 3+1
decomposition the resulting Hamiltonian arises as a completely constrained
system. However, it is structurally different from the the standard
Arnowitt-Deser-Misner (ADM) type formulation. In this geometrical framework the
basic field quantities are tetrads that transform under the global SO(3,1) and

Randomized Revenue Monotone Mechanisms for Online Advertising
Online advertising is the main source of revenue for many Internet firms. A
central component of online advertising is the underlying mechanism that
selects and prices the winning ads for a given ad slot. In this paper we study
designing a mechanism for the Combinatorial Auction with Identical Items (CAII)
in which we are interested in selling identical items to a group of bidders
each demanding a certain number of items between and . CAII generalizes
important online advertising scenarios such as image-text and video-pod
auctions [GK14]. In image-text auction we want to fill an advertising slot on a
publisher's web page with either text-ads or a single image-ad and in
video-pod auction we want to fill an advertising break of seconds with
video-ads of possibly different durations.
Our goal is to design truthful mechanisms that satisfy Revenue Monotonicity
(RM). RM is a natural constraint which states that the revenue of a mechanism
should not decrease if the number of participants increases or if a participant
increases her bid.
[GK14] showed that no deterministic RM mechanism can attain PoRM of less than
for CAII, i.e., no deterministic mechanism can attain more than
fraction of the maximum social welfare. [GK14] also design a
mechanism with PoRM of for CAII.
In this paper, we seek to overcome the impossibility result of [GK14] for
deterministic mechanisms by using the power of randomization. We show that by
using randomization, one can attain a constant PoRM. In particular, we design a
