Combined radiation, convection, and conduction for a system with a partially transmitting wall
The net radiation method is developed for systems having both opaque and partially transparent walls. Heat convection is present at the surfaces and heat conduction through the windows is taken into account. Specific equations are derived for a window between two parallel plates, where one plate is at an elevated temperature typical of what would be encountered in an electric furnace, and the other plate is being cooled. A two-band model is used with cutoff wavelengths typical of glass or quartz. Numerical results are obtained for the window temperature and the heat flow through the window. The effect on these quantities of various plate temperatures and emissivities is shown
Liquid jet pumped by rising gas bubbles
A two-phase mathematical model is proposed for calculating the induced turbulent vertical liquid flow. Bubbles provide a large buoyancy force and the associated drag on the liquid moves the liquid upward. The liquid pumped upward consists of the bubble wakes and the liquid brought into the jet region by turbulent entrainment. The expansion of the gas bubbles as they rise through the liquid is taken into account. The continuity and momentum equations are solved numerically for an axisymmetric air jet submerged in water. Water pumping rates are obtained as a function of air flow rate and depth of submergence. Comparisons are made with limited experimental information in the literature
A user oriented computer program for the analysis of microwave mixers, and a study of the effects of the series inductance and diode capacitance on the performance of some simple mixers
A user oriented computer program for analyzing microwave and millimeter wave mixers with a single Schottky barrier diode of known I-V and C-V characteristics is described. The program first performs a nonlinear analysis to determine the diode conductance and capacitance waveforms produced by the local oscillator. A small signal linear analysis is then used to find the conversion loss, port impedances, and input noise temperature of the mixer. Thermal noise from the series resistance of the diode and shot noise from the periodically pumped current in the diode conductance are considered. The effects of the series inductance and diode capacitance on the performance of some simple mixer circuits using a conventional Schottky diode, a Schottky diode in which there is no capacitance variation, and a Mott diode are studied. It is shown that the parametric effects of the voltage dependent capacitance of a conventional Schottky diode may be either detrimental or beneficial depending on the diode and circuit parameters
Subcritical Superstrings
We introduce the Liouville mode into the Green-Schwarz superstring. Like
massive supersymmetry without central charges, there is no kappa symmetry.
However, the second-class constraints (and corresponding Wess-Zumino term)
remain, and can be solved by (twisted) chiral superspace in dimensions D=4 and
6. The matter conformal anomaly is c = 4-D < 1. It thus can be canceled for
physical dimensions by the usual Liouville methods, unlike the bosonic string

Computing special values of partial zeta functions
We discuss computation of the special values of partial zeta functions
associated to totally real number fields. The main tool is the \emph{Eisenstein
cocycle} , a group cocycle for ; the special values are
computed as periods of , and are expressed in terms of generalized
Dedekind sums. We conclude with some numerical examples for cubic and quartic

Lie Superalgebra Stability and Branes
The algebra of the generators of translations in superspace is unstable, in
the sense that infinitesimal perturbations of its structure constants lead to
non-isomorphic algebras. We show how superspace extensions remedy this
situation (after arguing that remedy is indeed needed) and review the benefits
reaped in the description of branes of all kinds in the presence of the extra

Broadband electromagnetic response and ultrafast dynamics of few-layer epitaxial graphene
We study the broadband optical conductivity and ultrafast carrier dynamics of
epitaxial graphene in the few-layer limit. Equilibrium spectra of nominally
buffer, monolayer, and multilayer graphene exhibit significant terahertz and
near-infrared absorption, consistent with a model of intra- and interband
transitions in a dense Dirac electron plasma. Non-equilibrium terahertz
transmission changes after photoexcitation are shown to be dominated by excess
hole carriers, with a 1.2-ps mono-exponential decay that reflects the

Thermalization via Heat Radiation of an Individual Object Thinner than the Thermal Wavelength
Modeling and investigating the thermalization of microscopic objects with
arbitrary shape from first principles is of fundamental interest and may lead
to technical applications. Here, we study, over a large temperature range, the
thermalization dynamics due to far-field heat radiation of an individual,
deterministically produced silica fiber with a predetermined shape and a
diameter smaller than the thermal wavelength. The temperature change of the
subwavelength-diameter fiber is determined through a measurement of its optical
path length in conjunction with an ab initio thermodynamic model of the fiber
structure. Our results show excellent agreement with a theoretical model that
considers heat radiation as a volumetric effect and takes the emitter shape and
size relative to the emission wavelength into account
