Testing a Simplified Version of Einstein's Equations for Numerical Relativity

    Get PDF
Solving dynamical problems in general relativity requires the full machinery of numerical relativity. Wilson has proposed a simpler but approximate scheme for systems near equilibrium, like binary neutron stars. We test the scheme on isolated, rapidly rotating, relativistic stars. Since these objects are in equilibrium, it is crucial that the approximation work well if we are to believe its predictions for more complicated systems like binaries. Our results are very encouraging.Comment: 9 pages (RevTeX 3.0 with 6 uuencoded figures), CRSR-107

International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE) satellite mission analysis

    Get PDF
The results are presented of the mission analysis performed by Computer Sciences Corporation (CSC) in support of the International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE) satellite. The launch window is open for three separate periods (for a total time of 7 months) during the year extending from July 20, 1977, to July 20, 1978. The synchronous orbit shadow constraint limits the launch window to approximately 88 minutes per day. Apogee boost motor fuel was computed to be 455 pounds (206 kilograms) and on-station weight was 931 pounds (422 kilograms). The target orbit is elliptical synchronous, with eccentricity 0.272 and 24 hour period

Using rewards and penalties to obtain desired subject performance

    Get PDF
Operant conditioning procedures, specifically the use of negative reinforcement, in achieving stable learning behavior is described. The critical tracking test (CTT) a method of detecting human operator impairment was tested. A pass level is set for each subject, based on that subject's asymptotic skill level while sober. It is critical that complete training take place before the individualized pass level is set in order that the impairment can be detected. The results provide a more general basis for the application of reward/penalty structures in manual control research

Quasi-circular Orbits for Spinning Binary Black Holes

    Get PDF
Using an effective potential method we examine binary black holes where the individual holes carry spin. We trace out sequences of quasi-circular orbits and locate the innermost stable circular orbit as a function of spin. At large separations, the sequences of quasi-circular orbits match well with post-Newtonian expansions, although a clear signature of the simplifying assumption of conformal flatness is seen. The position of the ISCO is found to be strongly dependent on the magnitude of the spin on each black hole. At close separations of the holes, the effective potential method breaks down. In all cases where an ISCO could be determined, we found that an apparent horizon encompassing both holes forms for separations well inside the ISCO. Nevertheless, we argue that the formation of a common horizon is still associated with the breakdown of the effective potential method.Comment: 13 pages, 10 figures, submitted to PR

SENS-5D trajectory and wind-sensitivity calculations for unguided rockets

    Get PDF
A computational procedure is described which numerically integrates the equations of motion of an unguided rocket. Three translational and two angular (roll discarded) degrees of freedom are integrated through the final burnout; and then, through impact, only three translational motions are considered. Input to the routine is: initial time, altitude and velocity, vehicle characteristics, and other defined options. Input format has a wide range of flexibility for special calculations. Output is geared mainly to the wind-weighting procedure, and includes summary of trajectory at burnout, apogee and impact, summary of spent-stage trajectories, detailed position and vehicle data, unit-wind effects for head, tail and cross winds, coriolis deflections, range derivative, and the sensitivity curves (the so called F(Z) and DF(Z) curves). The numerical integration procedure is a fourth-order, modified Adams-Bashforth Predictor-Corrector method. This method is supplemented by a fourth-order Runge-Kutta method to start the integration at t=0 and whenever error criteria demand a change in step size

Tracking Data Acquisition System (TDAS) for the 1990's. Volume 6: TDAS navigation system architecture

    Get PDF
One-way range and Doppler methods for providing user orbit and time determination are examined. Forward link beacon tracking, with on-board processing of independent navigation signals broadcast continuously by TDAS spacecraft; forward link scheduled tracking; with on-board processing of navigation data received during scheduled TDAS forward link service intervals; and return link scheduled tracking; with ground-based processing of user generated navigation data during scheduled TDAS return link service intervals are discussed. A system level definition and requirements assessment for each alternative, an evaluation of potential navigation performance and comparison with TDAS mission model requirements is included. TDAS satellite tracking is also addressed for two alternatives: BRTS and VLBI tracking

Perturbative evolution of conformally flat initial data for a single boosted black hole

    Get PDF
The conformally flat families of initial data typically used in numerical relativity to represent boosted black holes are not those of a boosted slice of the Schwarzschild spacetime. If such data are used for each black hole in a collision, the emitted radiation will be partially due to the ``relaxation'' of the individual holes to ``boosted Schwarzschild'' form. We attempt to compute this radiation by treating the geometry for a single boosted conformally flat hole as a perturbation of a Schwarzschild black hole, which requires the use of second order perturbation theory. In this we attempt to mimic a previous calculation we did for the conformally flat initial data for spinning holes. We find that the boosted black hole case presents additional subtleties, and although one can evolve perturbatively and compute radiated energies, it is much less clear than in the spinning case how useful for the study of collisions are the radiation estimates for the ``spurious energy'' in each hole. In addition to this we draw some lessons on which frame of reference appears as more favorable for computing black hole collisions in the close limit approximation.Comment: 11 pages, RevTex, 4 figures included with psfig, to appear in PR

Multivariate Design of Experiments for Engineering Dimensional Analysis

We consider the design of dimensional analysis experiments when there is more than a single response. We first give a brief overview of dimensional analysis experiments and the dimensional analysis (DA) procedure. The validity of the DA method for univariate responses was established by the Buckingham Π\Pi-Theorem in the early 20th century. We extend the theorem to the multivariate case, develop basic criteria for multivariate design of DA and give guidelines for design construction. Finally, we illustrate the construction of designs for DA experiments for an example involving the design of a heat exchanger

A Mechanism for Ferrimagnetism and Incommensurability in One-Dimensional Systems

A mechanism for ferrimagnetism in (1+1)-dimensions is discussed. The ferrimagnetism is cased by interactions described by operators with non-zero conformal spin. Such interactions appear in such problems as the problem of tunneling between Luttinger liquids and the problem of frustrated spin ladder. I present exact solutions for a representative class of models containing such interactions together with a simple mean field analysis. It is shown that the interactions (i) dynamically generate static oscillations with a wave vector dependent on the coupling constant, (ii) give rise to a finite magnetic moment at T=0T = 0 accompanied by the soft mode with a non-relativistic ({\it ferromagnetic}) dispersion E∼k2E \sim k^2, (iii) generate massive (roton) modes.Comment: replaced by the extended version, references adde
