Gas Density Fluctuations in the Perseus Cluster: Clumping Factor and Velocity Power Spectrum
X-ray surface brightness fluctuations in the core of the Perseus Cluster are
analyzed, using deep observations with the Chandra observatory. The amplitude
of gas density fluctuations on different scales is measured in a set of radial
annuli. It varies from 8 to 12 per cent on scales of ~10-30 kpc within radii of
30-160 kpc from the cluster center and from 9 to 7 per cent on scales of ~20-30
kpc in an outer, 60-220 kpc annulus. Using a statistical linear relation
between the observed amplitude of density fluctuations and predicted velocity,
the characteristic velocity of gas motions on each scale is calculated. The
typical amplitudes of the velocity outside the central 30 kpc region are 90-140
km/s on ~20-30 kpc scales and 70-100 km/s on smaller scales ~7-10 kpc. The
velocity power spectrum is consistent with cascade of turbulence and its slope
is in a broad agreement with the slope for canonical Kolmogorov turbulence. The
gas clumping factor estimated from the power spectrum of the density
fluctuations is lower than 7-8 per cent for radii ~30-220 kpc from the center,
leading to a density bias of less than 3-4 per cent in the cluster core.
Uncertainties of the analysis are examined and discussed. Future measurements
of the gas velocities with the Astro-H, Athena and Smart-X observatories will
directly measure the gas density-velocity perturbation relation and further

Electron neutrino tagging through tertiary lepton detection
We discuss an experimental technique aimed at tagging electron neutrinos in
multi-GeV artificial sources on an event-by-event basis. It exploits in a novel
manner calorimetric and tracking technologies developed in the framework of the
LHC experiments and of rare kaon decay searches. The setup is suited for
slow-extraction, moderate power beams and it is based on an instrumented decay
tunnel equipped with tagging units that intercept secondary and tertiary
leptons from the bulk of undecayed \pi^+ and protons. We show that the taggers
are able to reduce the \nue contamination originating from K_e3 decays by about
one order of magnitude. Only a limited suppression (~60%) is achieved for \nue
produced by the decay-in-flight of muons; for low beam powers, similar
performance as for K_e3 can be reached supplementing the tagging system with an

Study of a Large NaI(Tl) Crystal
Using a narrow band positron beam, the response of a large high-resolution
NaI(Tl) crystal to an incident positron beam was measured. It was found that
nuclear interactions cause the appearance of additional peaks in the low energy
tail of the deposited energy spectrum
Pilot project purgatory? Assessing automated vehicle pilot projects in US cities
Pilot projects have emerged in cities globally as a way to experiment with the utilization of a suite of smart mobility and emerging transportation technologies. Automated vehicles (AVs) have become central tools for such projects as city governments and industry explore the use and impact of this emerging technology. This paper presents a large-scale assessment of AV pilot projects in U.S. cities to understand how pilot projects are being used to examine the risks and benefits of AVs, how cities integrate these potentially transformative technologies into conventional policy and planning, and how and what they are learning about this technology and its future opportunities and risks. Through interviews with planning practitioners and document analysis, we demonstrate that the approaches cities take for AVs differ significantly, and often lack coherent policy goals. Key findings from this research include: (1) a disconnect between the goals of the pilot projects and a city\u27s transportation goals; (2) cities generally lack a long-term vision for how AVs fit into future mobility systems and how they might help address transportation goals; (3) an overemphasis of non-transportation benefits of AV pilots projects; (4) AV pilot projects exhibit a lack of policy learning and iteration; and (5) cities are not leveraging pilot projects for public benefits. Overall, urban and transportation planners and decision makers show a clear interest to discover how AVs can be used to address transportation challenges in their communities, but our research shows that while AV pilot projects purport to do this, while having numerous outcomes, they have limited value for informing transportation policy and planning questions around AVs. We also find that AV pilot projects, as presently structured, may constrain planners\u27 ability to re-think transportation systems within the context of rapid technological change

The physics motivations, design, and status of the Booster Neutrino
Experiment at Fermilab, MiniBooNE, are briefly discussed. Particular emphasis
is given on the ongoing preparatory work that is needed for the MiniBooNE muon
neutrino to electron neutrino oscillation appearance search. This search aims
to confirm or refute in a definitive and independent way the evidence for

Effects of ultrasound treatments on wine microorganisms
Ultrasound is one of the most promising non-thermal an emerging technique in food technology. The objective of the present work was to evaluate the effect of different ultrasonic treatments on the most important wine microbiota (Saccharomyces and non-Saccharomyces yeasts and lactic acid bacteria). Two stages were carried out: the assessment step, where six different ultrasonic treatments (with varying power, time, and pulses) were used on Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Brettanomyces spp., and Lactiplantibacillus plantarum; and the validation step, where two chosen ultrasonic treatments were used on Zigosaccharomyces bailli, Brettanomyces spp., Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Saccharomyces bayanus, Pichia membranifaciens, Schizosaccharomyces pombe, and Hanseniaspora osmophila. The most sensitive microorganism was Brettanomyces spp., and the most resistant was Lactiplantibacillus plantarum. Ultrasonic treatments had varying effects on vitality (delay of growth or maximum OD reduction) and on viability (reduction of microbial growth)
