    Aviation Safety Issues Database

    The aviation safety issues database was instrumental in the refinement and substantiation of the National Aviation Safety Strategic Plan (NASSP). The issues database is a comprehensive set of issues from an extremely broad base of aviation functions, personnel, and vehicle categories, both nationally and internationally. Several aviation safety stakeholders such as the Commercial Aviation Safety Team (CAST) have already used the database. This broader interest was the genesis to making the database publically accessible and writing this report

    Implicaion of the neutrino oscillation search for the neutrino mass square difference and mixing are discussed. We have considered the effective majorana mass m_{ee}, related for \beta\beta_{0\nu}decay. We find limits for neutrino mass eigen value m_{i} in the different neutrino mass spectrum,which explain the different neutrino data.Comment: 10 page

    Supernova pointing by neutrino matter oscillation

    A core-collapse supernova will emit a neutrino burst that can be detected on Earth. If the neutrinos travel through the Earth before reaching the detector they oscillate via interaction with Earth\u27s matter, yielding oscillations in the neutrino energy spectrum. The frequency of these oscillations in energy is correlated with the pathlength traveled in the Earth and therefore contains information on the supernova location. For this technique to be useful for pointing, good energy resolution, well-known oscillation parameters and high statistics are required. This method is inferior to pointing with elastic scattering in a water Cherenkov detector but could be applied for scintillator-type detectors which have better energy resolution but weak intrinsic pointing capabilities. By the time a nearby supernova happens the requirements might well be fulfilled, and if no water Cherenkov detector is running at that time it may provide the only possibility to gain directional information. The pointing quality can be further improved by the combination of measurements from multiple detectors and also by taking relative timing into account

    The effects of cognitive defusion and thought distraction on emotional discomfort and believability of negative self-referential thoughts

    Previous research has shown that rapid vocal repetition of a one-word version of negative self-referential thought reduces the stimulus functions (e.g., emotional discomfort and believability) associated with that thought. The present study compares the effects of that defusion strategy with thought distraction and distraction-based experimental control tasks on a negative self-referential thought. Non-clinical undergraduates were randomly assigned to one of three protocols. The cognitive defusion condition reduced the emotional discomfort and believability of negative self-referential thoughts significantly greater than comparison conditions. Favorable results were also found for the defusion technique with participants with elevated depressive symptoms

    We investigate the Fermat-Torricelli problem in d-dimensional real normed spaces or Minkowski spaces, mainly for d=2. Our approach is to study the Fermat-Torricelli locus in a geometric way. We present many new results, as well as give an exposition of known results that are scattered in various sources, with proofs for some of them. Together, these results can be considered to be a minitheory of the Fermat-Torricelli problem in Minkowski spaces and especially in Minkowski planes. This demonstrates that substantial results about locational problems valid for all norms can be found using a geometric approach

    Sixteen years of Collaborative Learning through Active Sense-making in Physics (CLASP) at UC Davis

    This paper describes our large reformed introductory physics course at UC Davis, which bioscience students have been taking since 1996. The central feature of this course is a focus on sense-making by the students during the five hours per week discussion/labs in which the students take part in activities emphasizing peer-peer discussions, argumentation, and presentations of ideas. The course differs in many fundamental ways from traditionally taught introductory physics courses. After discussing the unique features of CLASP and its implementation at UC Davis, various student outcome measures are presented showing increased performance by students who took the CLASP course compared to students who took a traditionally taught introductory physics course.     Endothelial Wall Thickness, Cardiorespiratory Fitness And Inflammatory Markers In Obese And Non-obese Adolescents.

    Increased carotid intima-media thickness (c-IMT) is considered a marker of early-onset atherosclerosis and it has been found in obese children and adolescents, but the risk factors associated with this population remain to be elucidated. To compare and verify the relationship between c-IMT, metabolic profile, inflammatory markers, and cardiorespiratory fitness in obese and non-obese children and adolescents. Thirty-five obese subjects (19 boys) and 18 non-obese subjects (9 boys), aged 10-16 years, were included. Anthropometry, body composition, blood pressure, maximal oxygen consumption (VO2max), and basal metabolic rate were evaluated. Serum glucose, insulin, homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR), blood lipids, C-reactive protein (CRP), and adiponectin were assessed. c-IMT was measured by ultrasound. The results showed that c-IMT, triglycerides, insulin, HOMA-IR, and CRP values were significantly higher in the obese group than in the non-obese group, and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-c), adiponectin, and VO2max values were significantly lower in the obese group than in the non-obese group. The c-IMT was directly correlated with body weight, waist circumference, % body fat, and HOMA-IR and inversely correlated with % free fat mass, HDL-c, and VO2max. Our findings show that c-IMT correlates not only with body composition, lipids, insulin resistance, and inflammation but also with low VO2max values in children and adolescents.1847-5
