    Modelling extreme concentration from a source in a turbulent flow over rough wall

    The concentration fluctuations in passive plumes from an elevated and a groundlevel source in a turbulent boundary layer over a rough wall were studied using large eddy simulation and wind tunnel experiment. The predictions of statistics up to second order moments were thereby validated. In addition, the trend of relative fluctuations far downstream for a ground level source was estimated using dimensional analysis. The techniques of extreme value theory were then applied to predict extreme concentrations by modelling the upper tail of the probability density function of the concentration time series by the Generalised Pareto Distribution. Data obtained from both the simulations and experiments were analysed in this manner. The predicted maximum concentration (?0) normalized by the local mean concentration (Cm) or by the local r.m.s of concentration fluctuation (crms), was extensively investigated. Values for ?0/Cm and ?0/crms as large as 50 and 20 respectively were found for the elevated source and 10 and 15 respectively for the ground-level source

    Covert Ephemeral Communication in Named Data Networking

    In the last decade, there has been a growing realization that the current Internet Protocol is reaching the limits of its senescence. This has prompted several research efforts that aim to design potential next-generation Internet architectures. Named Data Networking (NDN), an instantiation of the content-centric approach to networking, is one such effort. In contrast with IP, NDN routers maintain a significant amount of user-driven state. In this paper we investigate how to use this state for covert ephemeral communication (CEC). CEC allows two or more parties to covertly exchange ephemeral messages, i.e., messages that become unavailable after a certain amount of time. Our techniques rely only on network-layer, rather than application-layer, services. This makes our protocols robust, and communication difficult to uncover. We show that users can build high-bandwidth CECs exploiting features unique to NDN: in-network caches, routers' forwarding state and name matching rules. We assess feasibility and performance of proposed cover channels using a local setup and the official NDN testbed

    Historic Light Curve and Long-term Optical Variation of BL Lacertae 2200+420

    In this paper, historical optical(UBVRI) data and newly observed data from the Yunnan Observatory of China(about100 years) are presented for BL Lacertae. Maximum variations in UBVRI: 5.12, 5.31, 4.73, 2.59, and 2.54 and color indices of U-B = -0.11 +/- 0.20, B-V= 1.0 +/- 0.11, V-R= 0.73 +/- 0.19, V-I= 1.42 +/- 0.25, R-I= 0.82 +/- 0.11, and B-I= 2.44 +/- 0.29 have been obtained from the literature; The Jurkevich method is used to investigate the existence of periods in the B band light curve, and a long-term period of 14 years is found. The 0.6 and 0.88 year periods reported by Webb et al.(1988) are confirmed.     The role of the N(2080)N^*(2080) resonance in the γpK+Λ(1520)\vec{\gamma} p \to K^+ \Lambda(1520) reaction

    We investigate the Λ(1520)\Lambda(1520) photo-production in the γpK+Λ(1520)\vec{\gamma} p \to K^+ \Lambda(1520) reaction within the effective Lagrangian method near threshold. In addition to the "background" contributions from the contact, tt-channel KK exchange, and ss-channel nucleon pole terms, which were already considered in previous works, the contribution from the nucleon resonance N(2080)N^*(2080) (spin-parity JP=3/2J^P = 3/2^-) is also considered. We show that the inclusion of the nucleon resonance N(2080)N^*(2080) leads to a fairly good description of the new LEPS differential cross section data, and that these measurements can be used to determine some of the properties of this latter resonance. However, serious discrepancies appear when the predictions of the model are compared to the photon-beam asymmetry also measured by the LEPS Collaboration.Comment: 9 pages,6 figures, 1 tabl

    Jahn-Teller effect and stability of the charge-ordered state in La1-xCaxMnO3 (0.5<x<0.9) manganites

    The longitudinal ultrasonic sound velocity and attenuation, the resistivity, and lattice parameters were studied as a function of temperature from 30 K to 300 K in La1-xCaxMnO3 (0.5<x<0.9). For all the samples, a dramatic stiffening of the sound velocity below the charge ordering transition temperature TCO was directly driven by distinct changes of the lattice parameters due to the formation of long range ordering of Jahn-Teller distorted MnO6 octahedra. The relative change of the sound velocity (DeltaV/V) below TCO depends on the Ca concentration x and reaches the maximum at x=0.75, implying that the effective strength of electron-lattice interaction with the Jahn-Teller distortion is the strongest at x=0.75 and hence the charge ordered state is mostly stabilized near x=0.75 and insensitive to the application of a magnetic field, which is supported by the charge transport properties under high magnetic fields up to 14T.Comment: 16 pages, 5 figures, PD
