    The lift force on a drop in unbounded plane Poiseuille flow

    The lift force on a deformable liquid sphere moving in steady, plane Poiseuille-Stokes flow and subjected to an external body force is calculated. The results are obtained by seeking a solution to Stokes' equations for the motion of the liquids inside and outside the slightly perturbed sphere surface, as expansions valid for small values of the ratio of the Weber number to the Reynolds number. When the ratio of the drop and external fluid viscosities is small, the lift exerted on a neutrally buoyant drop is found to be approximately one-tenth of the magnitude of the force reported by Wohl and Rubinow acting on the same drop in unbounded Poiseuille flow in a tube. The resultant trajectory of the drop is calculated and displayed as a function of the external body force

    Optimized 4 pi spherical shell depleted uranium-water shield weights for 200 to 550-megawatt reactors

    Optimization calculations to determine minimum 4 pi spherical-shell weights were performed at 200-, 375-, and 550-megawatt-thermal reactor power levels. Monte Carlo analyses were performed for a reactor power level corresponding to 375 megawatts. Power densities for the spherical reactor model used varied from 64.2 to 256 watts per cubic centimeter. The dose rate constraint in the optimization calculations was 0.25 mrem per hour at 9.14 meters from the reactor center. The resulting shield weights were correlated with the reactor power levels and power densities by a regression analysis. The optimum shield weight for a 375-megawatt, 160-watt-per-cubic-centimeter reactor was 202,000 kilograms

    Estimating HIV Medication Adherence and Persistence: Two Instruments for Clinical and Research Use

    Antiretroviral therapy (ART) requires lifelong daily oral therapy. While patient characteristics associated with suboptimal ART adherence and persistence have been described in cohorts of HIV-infected persons, these factors are poor predictors of individual medication taking behaviors. We aimed to create and test instruments for the estimation of future ART adherence and persistence for clinical and research applications. Following formative work, a battery of 148 items broadly related to HIV infection and treatment was developed and administered to 181 HIV-infected patients. ART adherence and persistence were assessed using electronic monitoring for 3 months. Perceived confidence in medication taking and self-reported barriers to adherence were strongest in predicting non-adherence over time. Barriers to adherence (e.g., affordability, scheduling) were the strongest predictors of non-adherence, as well as 3- and 7-day non-persistence. A ten-item battery for prediction of these outcomes (www.med.unc.edu/ncaidstraining/adherence/for-providers) and a 30-item battery reflective of underlying psychological constructs can help identify and study individuals at risk for suboptimal ART adherence and persistence

    Flight evaluation of two segment approaches for jet transport noise abatement

    A 75 flight-hour operational evaluation was conducted with a representative four-engine fan-jet transport in a representative airport environment. The flight instrument systems were modified to automatically provide pilots with smooth and continuous pitch steering command information during two-segment approaches. Considering adverse weather, minimum ceiling and flight crew experience criteria, a transition initiation altitude of approximately 800 feet AFL would have broadest acceptance for initiating two-segment approach procedures in scheduled service. The profile defined by the system gave an upper glidepath of approximately 6 1/2 degrees. This was 1/2 degree greater than inserted into the area navigation system. The glidepath error is apparently due to an erroneous along-track, distance-to-altitude profile

    Patch Plate Materials Compatibility Assessment

    Lunar dust proved to be a greater problem during the Apollo missions than was originally anticipated. The highly angular, charged dust particles stuck to seals, radiators, and visors; clogged mechanisms; and abraded space suits. As reported by Apollo 12 astronaut Pete Conrad "We must have had more than a hundred hours suited work with the same equipment, and the wear was not as bad on the training suits as it is on these flight suits in just the eight hours we were out.". Dust clinging to surfaces was also transport-ed into habitable spaces leading to lung and eye irritation of the astronauts. The Apollo astronauts were on the Lunar surface less than 24 hours and experienced many dust related problems. With the Artemis program, we are planning longer stays on the surface, with more activities that have the potential to put the astronauts and equipment in contact with greater quantities of Lunar dust. The success of these missions will depend on our understanding of material interactions with Lunar dust and the development of ways to mitigate dust effects in cases where exposure to dust will lead to failure of components, unacceptable loss of power or thermal control, unacceptable loss of visibility, or health issues. Through the Lunar Surface In-novation Initiative (LSII), we are initiating a Patch Plate Materials Compatibility Assessment project. The overall goal of the three year project is to develop passive approaches to mitigate Lunar dust adhesion to surfaces for technologies that are currently at TRL levels 2-3 to bring them to TRL level 5 through ground-based assessment, culminating in a demonstration flight experiment on a Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS) lander in 2022-2023.     Reliable Bonding of Composite Laminates Using Reflowable Epoxy Resins

    Epoxy matrix composites assembled with adhesives maximize the performance of aerospace structures, but the possibility of forming weak bonds requires the installation of redundant fasteners, which add weight and manufacturing cost. Co-cured joints (e.g. unitized composite structures) are immune to weak bonds because the uncured resin undergoes diffusion and mixing through the joint. A means of co-curing complex structures may reduce the need for redundant fasteners in bondlines. To this end, NASA started the AERoBOND project to develop novel joining materials to enable a secondary-co-cure assembly process. Aerospace epoxy resin systems reformulated with offset stoichiometry prevented the resin from advancing beyond the gel point during a conventional autoclave cure cycle up to 180 C. The offset resins were applied to the joining surfaces of laminate preforms as prepreg. Two surfaces with complimentary offset resins were joined using conventional secondary bonding techniques. Preliminary efforts have indicated that the resulting joint has no discernable interface and appears as a conventional co-cured laminate under optical magnification. This report will discuss the initial work performed regarding formulation of the epoxy resin system using calorimetry, rheology, and mechanical testing

    Visual Perturbation to Enhance Return to Sport Rehabilitation after Anterior Cruciate Ligament Injury: A Clinical Commentary

    Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tears are common traumatic knee injuries causing joint instability, quadriceps muscle weakness and impaired motor coordination. The neuromuscular consequences of injury are not limited to the joint and surrounding musculature, but may modulate central nervous system reorganization. Neuroimaging data suggest patients with ACL injuries may require greater levels of visual-motor and neurocognitive processing activity to sustain lower limb control relative to healthy matched counterparts. Therapy currently fails to adequately address these nuanced consequences of ACL injury, which likely contributes to impaired neuromuscular control when visually or cognitively challenged and high rates of re-injury. This gap in rehabilitation may be filled by visual perturbation training, which may reweight sensory neural processing toward proprioception and reduce the dependency on vision to perform lower extremity motor tasks and/or increase visuomotor processing efficiency. This clinical commentary details a novel approach to supplement the current standard of care for ACL injury by incorporating stroboscopic glasses with key motor learning principles customized to target visual and cognitive dependence for motor control after ACL injury. # Level of Evidence

    Hydrogen-Bonding Surfaces for Ice Mitigation

    Ice formation on aircraft, either on the ground or in-flight, is a major safety issue. While ground icing events occur predominantly during the winter months, in-flight icing can happen anytime during the year. The latter is more problematic since it could result in increased drag and loss of lift. Under a Phase I ARMD NARI Seedling Activity, coated aluminum surfaces possessing hydrogen-bonding groups were under investigation for mitigating ice formation. Hydroxyl and methyl terminated dimethylethoxysilanes were prepared via known chemistries and characterized by spectroscopic methods. These materials were subsequently used to coat aluminum surfaces. Surface compositions were based on pure hydroxyl and methyl terminated species as well as mixtures of the two. Coated surfaces were characterized by contact angle goniometry. Receding water contact angle data suggested several potential surfaces that may exhibit reduced ice adhesion. Qualitative icing experiments performed under representative environmental temperatures using supercooled distilled water delivered via spray coating were inconclusive. Molecular modeling studies suggested that chain mobility affected the interface between ice and the surface more than terminal group chemical composition.
