The accretion flow in the discless intermediate polar V2400 Ophiuchi
RXTE observations confirm that the X-ray lightcurve of V2400 Oph is pulsed at
the beat cycle, as expected in a discless intermediate polar. There are no
X-ray modulations at the orbital or spin cycles, but optical line profiles vary
with all three cycles. We construct a model for line-profile variations in a
discless accretor, based on the idea that the accretion stream flips from one
magnetic pole to the other, and show that this accounts for the observed
behaviour over the spin and beat cycles. The minimal variability over the
orbital cycle implies that 1) V2400 Oph is at an inclination of only ~10 deg,
and 2) much of the accretion flow is not in a coherent stream, but is circling
the white dwarf, possibly as a ring of denser, diamagnetic blobs. We discuss

An Optimal Execution Problem with Market Impact
We study an optimal execution problem in a continuous-time market model that
considers market impact. We formulate the problem as a stochastic control
problem and investigate properties of the corresponding value function. We find
that right-continuity at the time origin is associated with the strength of
market impact for large sales, otherwise the value function is continuous.
Moreover, we show the semi-group property (Bellman principle) and characterise
the value function as a viscosity solution of the corresponding
Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equation. We introduce some examples where the forms of
the optimal strategies change completely, depending on the amount of the
trader's security holdings and where optimal strategies in the Black-Scholes
type market with nonlinear market impact are not block liquidation but gradual

V405 Aurigae: A High Magnetic Field Intermediate Polar
Our simultaneous multicolor (UBVRI) circular polarimetry has revealed nearly
sinusoidal variation over the WD spin cycle, and almost symmetric positive and
negative polarization excursions. Maximum amplitudes are observed in the B and
V bands (+-3 %). This is the first time that polarization peaking in the blue
has been discovered in an IP, and suggests that V405 Aur is the highest
magnetic field IP found so far. The polarized flux spectrum is similar to those
found in polars with magnetic fields in the range B ~ 25-50 MG. Our low
resolution circular spectropolarimetry has given evidence of transient features
which can be fitted by cyclotron harmonics n = 6, 7, and 8, at a field of B =
31.5 +- 0.8 MG, consistent with the broad-band polarized flux spectrum. Timings
of the circular polarization zero crossovers put strict upper limits on WD spin
period changes and indicate that the WD in V405 Aur is currently accreting
closely at the spin equilibrium rate, with very long synchronization
timescales, T_s > 10^9 yr. For the observed spin to orbital period ratio,
P_{spin}/P_{orb} = 0.0365, and P_{orb} ~ 4.15 hr, existing numerical accretion
models predict spin equilibrium condition with B ~ 30 MG if the mass ratio of
the binary components is q_1 ~ 0.4. The high magnetic field makes V405 Aur a

Dos and don’ts in response priming research
Response priming is a well-understood but sparsely employed paradigm in cognitive
science. The method is powerful and well-suited for exploring early visuomotor
processing in a wide range of tasks and research fields. Moreover, response
priming can be dissociated from visual awareness, possibly because it is based
on the first sweep of feedforward processing of primes and targets. This makes
it a theoretically interesting device for separating conscious and unconscious
vision. We discuss the major opportunities of the paradigm and give specific
recommendations (e.g., tracing the time-course of priming in parametric
experiments). Also, we point out typical confounds, design flaws, and data
processing artifacts
Assessing Africa-Wide Pangolin Exploitation by Scaling Local Data
Overexploitation is one of the main pressures driving wildlife closer to extinction, yet broad-scale data to evaluate species' declines are limited. Using African pangolins (Family: Pholidota) as a case study, we demonstrate that collating local-scale data can provide crucial information on regional trends in exploitation of threatened species to inform conservation actions and policy. We estimate that 0.4-2.7 million pangolins are hunted annually in Central African forests. The number of pangolins hunted has increased by ∼150% and the proportion of pangolins of all vertebrates hunted increased from 0.04% to 1.83% over the past four decades. However, there were no trends in pangolins observed at markets, suggesting use of alternative supply chains. The price of giant (Smutsia gigantea) and arboreal (Phataginus sp.) pangolins in urban markets has increased 5.8 and 2.3 times respectively, mirroring trends in Asian pangolins. Efforts and resources are needed to increase law enforcement and population monitoring, and investigate linkages between subsistence hunting and illegal wildlife trade
Top-down contingent feature-specific orienting with and without awareness of the visual input
In the present article, the role of endogenous feature-specific orienting for
conscious and unconscious vision is reviewed. We start with an overview of
orienting. We proceed with a review of masking research, and the definition of
the criteria of experimental protocols that demonstrate endogenous and exogenous
orienting, respectively. Against this background of criteria, we assess studies
of unconscious orienting and come to the conclusion that so far studies of
unconscious orienting demonstrated endogenous feature-specific orienting. The
review closes with a discussion of the role of unconscious orienting in action
