Integrated gasifier combined cycle polygeneration system to produce liquid hydrogen
An integrated gasifier combined cycle (IGCC) system which simultaneously produces electricity, process steam, and liquid hydrogen was evaluated and compared to IGCC systems which cogenerate electricity and process steam. A number of IGCC plants, all employing a 15 MWe has turbine and producing from 0 to 20 tons per day of liquid hydrogen and from 0 to 20 MWt of process steam were considered. The annual revenue required to own and operate such plants was estimated to be significantly lower than the potential market value of the products. The results indicate a significant potential economic benefit to configuring IGCC systems to produce a clean fuel in addition to electricity and process steam in relatively small industrial applications
MHD performance calculations with oxygen enrichment
The impact of oxygen enrichment of the combustion air on the generator and overall plant performance was studied for the ECAS-scale MHD/steam plants. A channel optimization technique is described and the results of generator performance calculations using this technique are presented. Performance maps were generated to assess the impact of various generator parameters. Directly and separately preheated plant performance with varying O2 enrichment was calculated. The optimal level of enrichment was a function of plant type and preheat temperature. The sensitivity of overall plant performance to critical channel assumptions and oxygen plant performance characteristics was also examined
HYBRID MEMBRANE-PSA SYSTEM FOR SEPARATING OXYGEN FROMAR
A portable, non-cryogenic, oxygen generation system capable of delivering oxygen gas at purities greater than 98% and flow rates of 15 L/min or more is described. The system consists of two major components. The first component is a high efficiency membrane capable of separating argon and a portion of the nitrogen content from air, yielding an oxygen-enriched permeate flow. This is then fed to the second component, a pressure swing adsorption (PSA) unit utilizing a commercially available, but specifically formulated zeolite compound to remove the remainder of the nitrogen from the flow. The system is a unique gas separation system that can operate at ambient temperatures, for producing high purity oxygen for various applications (medical, refining, chemical production, enhanced combustion, fuel cells, etc...) and represents a significant advance compared to current technologies
Enter exitrons
Staiger D, Simpson GG. Enter exitrons. Genome Biology. 2015;16(1): 136.Exitrons are exon-like introns located within protein-coding exons. Removal or retention of exitrons through alternative splicing increases proteome complexity and thus adds to phenotypic diversity
The acoustic cut-off frequency of the Sun and the solar magnetic activity cycle
The acoustic cut-off frequency -the highest frequency for acoustic solar
eigenmodes- is an important parameter of the solar atmosphere as it determines
the upper boundary of the p-mode resonant cavities. At frequencies beyond this
value, acoustic disturbances are no longer trapped but traveling waves.
Interference amongst them give rise to higher-frequency peaks -the pseudomodes-
in the solar acoustic spectrum. The pseudomodes are shifted slightly in
frequency with respect to p modes making possible the use of pseudomodes to
determine the acoustic cut-off frequency. Using data from GOLF and VIRGO
instruments on board the SOHO spacecraft, we calculate the acoustic cut-off
frequency using the coherence function between both the velocity and intensity
sets of data. By using data gathered by these instruments during the entire
lifetime of the mission (1996 till the present), a variation in the acoustic
cut-off frequency with the solar magnetic activity cycle is found.Comment: Paper accepted in ApJ. 26 Pages, 9 figure
The Isomorphism Relation Between Tree-Automatic Structures
An -tree-automatic structure is a relational structure whose domain
and relations are accepted by Muller or Rabin tree automata. We investigate in
this paper the isomorphism problem for -tree-automatic structures. We
prove first that the isomorphism relation for -tree-automatic boolean
algebras (respectively, partial orders, rings, commutative rings, non
commutative rings, non commutative groups, nilpotent groups of class n >1) is
not determined by the axiomatic system ZFC. Then we prove that the isomorphism
problem for -tree-automatic boolean algebras (respectively, partial
orders, rings, commutative rings, non commutative rings, non commutative
groups, nilpotent groups of class n >1) is neither a -set nor a
-set

Addendum to the Calcined Waste Storage at the Idaho Nuclear Technology Center
This report is an addendum to the report Calcined Waste Storage at the Idaho Nuclear Technology and Engineering Center, INEEL/EXT-98-00455 Rev. 1, June 2003. The original report provided a summary description of the Calcined Solids Storage Facilities (CSSFs). It also contained dozens of pages of detailed data tables documenting the volume and composition (chemical content and radionuclide activity) of the calcine stored in the CSSFs and the liquid waste from which the calcine was derived. This addendum report compiles the calcine composition data from the original report. It presents the compiled data in a graphical format with units (weight percent, curies per cubic meter, and nanocuries per gram) that are commonly used in regulatory and waste acceptance criteria documents. The compiled data are easier to use and understand when comparing the composition of the calcine with potential regulatory or waste acceptance criteria. This addendum report also provides detailed explanations for the large variability in the calcine composition among the CSSFs. The calcine composition varies as a result of reprocessing different types of fuel that had different cladding materials. Different chemicals were used to dissolve the various types of fuel, extract the uranium, and calcine the resulting waste. This resulted in calcine with variable compositions. This addendum report also identifies a few trace chemicals and radionuclides for which the accuracy of the amounts estimated to be in the calcine could be improved by making adjustments to the assumptions and methods used in making the estimates
Drug release, cytocompatibility, bioactivity, and antibacterial activity of doxycycline loaded Mg-Ca-TiO2 composite scaffold
Mg-Ca-TiO2 (MCT) composite scaffolds loaded with different concentrations of doxycycline (DC) with a network of interconnected pores with good compressive strength (5 ± 0.1 MPa) were fabricated via space holder method for the first time. The results showed that MCT-DC scaffolds possess a porosity and pore size in the range of 65–67% and 600–800 μm respectively. The bioactivity results exhibited the apatite formation on the MCT-DC scaffold surface, indicating that DC did not obstruct the bioactivity of MCT. The MCT-DC scaffolds drug release profiles show the initial burst and sustained drug release (55–75%) and the release rate could be adjusted via altering the DC concentration. The MCT loaded with 1 and 5% DC did not indicate cytotoxic behavior against MG63 cells while further DC loading resulted in some toxicity. Antimicrobial properties of MCT-DC scaffolds against Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and Escherichia coli (E. coli) bacteria were examined and the results reveal oblivious inhibition zone around each MCT-DC scaffold whereas no obvious inhibition is observed around the MCT scaffold. Therefore, MCT-DC composite scaffolds with low concentration of DC could be alternative candidates for infection prevention and bone tissue engineering
