Specific-to-General Learning for Temporal Events with Application to Learning Event Definitions from Video
We develop, analyze, and evaluate a novel, supervised, specific-to-general
learner for a simple temporal logic and use the resulting algorithm to learn
visual event definitions from video sequences. First, we introduce a simple,
propositional, temporal, event-description language called AMA that is
sufficiently expressive to represent many events yet sufficiently restrictive
to support learning. We then give algorithms, along with lower and upper
complexity bounds, for the subsumption and generalization problems for AMA
formulas. We present a positive-examples--only specific-to-general learning
method based on these algorithms. We also present a polynomial-time--computable
``syntactic'' subsumption test that implies semantic subsumption without being
equivalent to it. A generalization algorithm based on syntactic subsumption can
be used in place of semantic generalization to improve the asymptotic
complexity of the resulting learning algorithm. Finally, we apply this
algorithm to the task of learning relational event definitions from video and
show that it yields definitions that are competitive with hand-coded ones

EXT program determines fluid field in bodies of arbitrary geometries in transient flow regime. INT program uses EXT output and measures flow conditions inside spacecraft body
Childhood cancer survival trends in Queensland 1956-80.
The true survival rates for the various forms of childhood cancer are best determined from a population-based study rather than from the results of clinical trials. Population-based survival rates have been calculated for four periods between 1956 and 1980 in Queensland. There was a significant improvement in survival for children who developed cancer after 1973 compared with those diagnosed before this date. There has however been no significant improvement in the survival rate for childhood cancer overall, or for acute lymphoblastic leukaemia since 1973. Over the 25 year period significant trends in survival rates were seen in acute lymphoblastic leukaemia, non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease, Wilms' tumour, medulloblastoma, and retinoblastoma. No such trend was seen for acute non-lymphoblastic leukaemia, neuroblastoma, rhabdomyosarcoma, juvenile or anaplastic astrocytoma, brain stem glioma, histiocytosis X, or bone tumours. There is a need for continuing research into better methods of treatment of childhood cancer
Characterization of Hypertension Risk Factors at the Committee on Temporary Shelter
Introduction: The health of homeless populations is at risk due to a high prevalence of undiagnosed hypertension (HTN) and cardiovascular disease (CVD). The interaction of housing and socioeconomic status with the risk factors for HTN and CVD remains unclear. Prevention of HTN through a healthy diet, exercise, adequate sleep, and avoidance of tobacco has been well described, but financial limitations and competing priorities for shelter and food make blood pressure (BP) control difficult for this population. By characterizing the risk factors and awareness of hypertension within the homeless population at the Committee on Temporary Shelter Daystation (COTS) in Burlington, Vermont, we may be able to identify promising avenues for therapeutic intervention.https://scholarworks.uvm.edu/comphp_gallery/1226/thumbnail.jp
Confusion of Tagged Perturbations in Forward Automatic Differentiation of Higher-Order Functions
Forward Automatic Differentiation (AD) is a technique for augmenting programs
to both perform their original calculation and also compute its directional derivative. The essence of Forward AD is to attach a derivative value to each number,
and propagate these through the computation. When derivatives are nested, the
distinct derivative calculations, and their associated attached values, must be distinguished. In dynamic languages this is typically accomplished by creating a unique
tag for each application of the derivative operator, tagging the attached values, and
overloading the arithmetic operators. We exhibit a subtle bug, present in fielded
implementations, in which perturbations are confused despite the tagging machinery
The Effect of Attractiveness on Food Sharing Preferences in Human Mating Markets
The current study explored how physical attractiveness affects food sharing by studying payment preferences for hypothetical romantic dinner dates (a hypothetical mating market). We analyzed payment preferences, self-rated attractiveness, and rated attractiveness for hypothetical dates in 416 participants. We hypothesized that (1) men would be more likely to prefer to pay than would women, (2) attractive individuals of both sexes would be less willing to pay, and (3) preferences to enter an exchange would be influenced by the attractiveness of prospective partners such that (3a) men would prefer to pay for attractive women, and (3b) women would prefer to be paid for by attractive men. All hypotheses were supported by our results. Individuals with higher self-rated attractiveness were more likely to prefer that their date would pay for the meal, and we found clear sex differences in how the attractiveness of potential dates affected payment preferences. Male participants preferred to pay for dates that had higher facial attractiveness, while female participants preferred that attractive men would pay. Individuals show condition dependent financial preferences consistent with the provisioning hypothesis in this mating market that are adaptive to evaluations of their own quality and that of prospective partners
