This report is the first of a series of reports being prepared for
the Norwegian Water Resources and Electricity Board. The second report
for 1970 has been published with an English summary and contains an extension
of the data contained in the 1969 report. Because this work
deals with problems very similar to those in Alaska, it was decided to
translate the first report and circulate a limited number of copies to
workers in the U. S. and Canada. Research very similar to the Norwegian
work was initiated in Alaska under the editor's direction in cooperation

Convex Hull of Planar H-Polyhedra
Suppose are planar (convex) H-polyhedra, that is, $A_i \in

The cross helicity at the solar surface by simulations and observations
The quasilinear mean-field theory for driven MHD turbulence leads to the
result that the observed cross helicity may directly yield the
magnetic eddy diffusivity \eta_{T} of the quiet Sun. In order to model the
cross helicity at the solar surface, magnetoconvection under the presence of a
vertical large-scale magnetic field is simulated with the nonlinear MHD code
NIRVANA. The very robust result of the calculations is that \simeq 2
independent of the applied magnetic field amplitude. The
correlation coefficient for the cross helicity is about 10%. Of similar
robustness is the finding that the rms value of the magnetic perturbations
exceeds the mean-field amplitude (only) by a factor of five. The characteristic
helicity speed u_{\eta} as the ratio of the eddy diffusivity and the density
scale height for an isothermal sound velocity of 6.6 km/s proves to be 1 km/s
for weak fields. This value well coincides with empirical results obtained from
the data of the HINODE satellite and the Swedish 1-m Solar Telescope (SST)
providing the cross helicity component . Both simulations and
observations thus lead to a numerical value of \eta_{T} \simeq 10^12 cm^2 /s as
characteristic for the surface of the quiet Sun.Comment: 6 pages, 6 figure
Polytopality and Cartesian products of graphs
We study the question of polytopality of graphs: when is a given graph the
graph of a polytope? We first review the known necessary conditions for a graph
to be polytopal, and we provide several families of graphs which satisfy all
these conditions, but which nonetheless are not graphs of polytopes. Our main
contribution concerns the polytopality of Cartesian products of non-polytopal
graphs. On the one hand, we show that products of simple polytopes are the only
simple polytopes whose graph is a product. On the other hand, we provide a
general method to construct (non-simple) polytopal products whose factors are

Strong Balmer lines in old stellar populations: No need for young ages in ellipticals?
Comparing models of Simple Stellar Populations (SSP) with observed line
strengths generally provides a tool to break the age-metallicity degeneracy in
elliptical galaxies. Due to the wide range of Balmer line strengths observed,
ellipticals have been interpreted to exhibit an appreciable scatter in age. In
this paper, we analyze Composite Stellar Population models with a simple mix of
an old metal-rich and an old metal-poor component. We show that these models
simultaneously produce strong Balmer lines and strong metallic lines without
invoking a young population. The key to this result is that our models are
based on SSPs that better match the steep increase of Hbeta in metal-poor
globular clusters than models in the literature. Hence, the scatter of Hbeta
observed in cluster and luminous field elliptical galaxies can be explained by
a spread in the metallicity of old stellar populations. We check our model with
respect to the so-called G-dwarf problem in ellipticals. For a galaxy subsample
covering a large range in UV-V colors we demonstrate that the addition of an
old metal-poor subcomponent does not invalidate other observational constraints

Restraint-induced Corticosterone Secretion and Hypothalamic CRH mRNA Expression are Augmented During Acute Withdrawal from Chronic Cocaine Administration
Stress responses during cocaine withdrawal likely contribute to drug relapse and may be intensified as a consequence of prior cocaine use. The present study examined changes in stressor-induced activation of the hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal (HPA) axis during acute withdrawal from chronic cocaine administration. Adult male Sprague–Dawley rats received daily administration of cocaine (30 mg/kg, i.p.) or saline for 14 days. Twenty-four hours after the last injection, rats in each group were sacrificed under stress-free conditions or following 30 min of immobilization. Plasma corticosterone (CORT) was measured in trunk-blood using radioimmunoassay, corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH) mRNA levels in the paraventricularnucleus (PVN) of the hypothalamus were measured using in situ hybridization and glucocorticoid receptor (GR) protein expression in the pituitary gland and dissected brain regions was measured using Western blot analysis. Basal CRH mRNA in the PVN was unaltered as a result of prior cocaine administration. However, a significant increase in CRH mRNA was observed 90 min following the termination of restraint in cocaine withdrawn, but not saline-treated, rats. Basal CORT was also unaffected by prior cocaine administration, but the CORT response measured immediately after restraint was significantly augmented in cocaine-withdrawn rats. Differences in GR protein expression in number of regions implicated in negative feedback regulation of HPA function, including the hypothalamus, were not observed. These findings indicate that the HPA response to stressors is intensified during early withdrawal from cocaine administration and may be independent of changes in GR-mediated negative feedback
Assessment of Kinematics and Electromyography Following Arthroscopic Single-Tendon Rotator Cuff Repair
Background The increasing demand for rotator cuff (RC) repair patients to return to work as soon as they are physically able has led to exploration of when this is feasible. Current guidelines from our orthopedic surgery clinic recommend a return to work at 9 weeks postoperation. To more fully define capacity to return to work, the current study was conducted using a unique series of quantitative tools. To date, no study has combined 3-dimensional (3D) motion analysis with electromyography (EMG) assessment during activities of daily living (ADLs), including desk tasks, and commonly prescribed rehabilitation exercise. Objective To apply a quantitative, validated upper extremity model to assess the kinematics and muscle activity of the shoulder following repair of the supraspinatus RC tendon compared to that in healthy shoulders. Design A prospective, cross-sectional comparison study. Setting All participants were evaluated during a single session at the Medical College of Wisconsin Department of Orthopaedic Surgery\u27s Motion Analysis Laboratory. Participants Ten participants who were 9-12 weeks post–operative repair of a supraspinatus RC tendon tear and 10 participants with healthy shoulders (HS) were evaluated. Methods All participants were evaluated with 3D motion analysis using a validated upper extremity model and synchronized EMG. Data from the 2 groups were compared using multivariate Hotelling T2 tests with post hoc analyses based on Welch t-tests. Main Outcome Measurements Participants\u27 thoracic and thoracohumeral joint kinematics, temporal-spatial parameters, and RC muscle activity were measured by applying a quantitative upper extremity model during 10 activities of daily living and 3 rehabilitation exercises. These included tasks of hair combing, drinking, writing, computer mouse use, typing, calling, reaching to back pocket, pushing a door open, pulling a door closed, external rotation, internal rotation, and rowing. Results There were significant differences of the thoracohumeral joint motion in only a few of the tested tasks: comb maximal flexion angle (P = .004), pull door internal/external rotation range of motion (P = .020), reach abduction/adduction range of motion (P = .001), reach flexion/extension range of motion (P = .001), reach extension minimal angle (P = .025), active external rotation maximal angle (P = .012), and active external rotation minimal angle (P = .004). The thorax showed significantly different kinematics of maximal flexion angle during the call (P = .011), mouse (P = .007), and drink tasks (P = .005) between the 2 groups. The EMG data analysis showed significantly increased subscapularis activity in the RC repair group during active external rotation. Conclusions Although limited abduction was expected due to repair of the supraspinatus tendon, only a single ADL (reaching to back pocket) had a significantly reduced abduction range of motion. Thoracic motion was shown to be used as a compensatory strategy during seated ADLs. Less flexion of the thorax may create passive shoulder flexion at the thoracohumeral joint in efforts to avoid active flexion. The RC repair group participants were able to accomplish the ADLs within the same time frame and through thoracohumeral joint kinematics similar to those in the healthy shoulder group participants. In summary, this study presents a quantification of the effects of RC repair and rehabilitation on the ability to perform ADLs. It may also point to a need for increased rehabilitation focus on either regaining external rotation strength or range of motion following RC repair to enhance recovery and return to the workforce
