This article may be used for non-commercial purposes in accordance with Wiley Terms and Conditions for Self-Archiving.A full account on rhodium-catalyzed asymmetric, directed hydroboration of functionalized prochiral cyclopropenes affording enantiomerically enriched cyclopropylboronates is reported. The scope and limitations of two alternate directing groups, ester and carboxamide, are evaluated. It was found that hydroboration of esters appeared to be more sensitive to substitution in the aromatic ring of the substrates. Specifically, ortho-halogens were detrimental for diastereo- and enantioselectivity, possibly because of additional coordination with rhodium. In contrast, more Lewis-basic amide directing groups allowed for stronger chelation to the transition metal, leading to consistently high diastereo- and enantioselectivity in hydroboration across a broader range of substrates

    Applying principles of behaviour change to reduce SARS-CoV-2 transmission

    Human behaviour is central to transmission of SARS-Cov-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, and changing behaviour is crucial to preventing transmission in the absence of pharmaceutical interventions. Isolation and social distancing measures, including edicts to stay at home, have been brought into place across the globe to reduce transmission of the virus, but at a huge cost to individuals and society. In addition to these measures, we urgently need effective interventions to increase adherence to behaviours that individuals in communities can enact to protect themselves and others: use of tissues to catch expelled droplets from coughs or sneezes, use of face masks as appropriate, hand-washing on all occasions when required, disinfecting objects and surfaces, physical distancing, and not touching one’s eyes, nose or mouth. There is an urgent need for direct evidence to inform development of such interventions, but it is possible to make a start by applying behavioural science methods and models

    We evaluate zeta-functions ζ(s)\zeta(s) at s=0s=0 for invariant non-minimal 2nd-order vector and tensor operators defined on maximally symmetric even dimensional spaces. We decompose the operators into their irreducible parts and obtain their corresponding eigenvalues. Using these eigenvalues, we are able to explicitly calculate ζ(0)\zeta(0) for the cases of Euclidean spaces and NN-spheres. In the NN-sphere case, we make use of the Euler-Maclaurin formula to develop asymptotic expansions for the required sums.     Consistent boundary conditions for Reduced Navier-Stokes (RNS) scheme applied to 3-dimensional internal viscous flows

    A consistent and efficient set of boundary conditions is developed for the multi-sweep space-marching pressure-elliptic Reduced Navier-Stokes (RNS) scheme as applied for 3-D internal viscous flow problems. No-slip boundary conditions are directly imposed on the solid walls. There is no iteration procedure required in the cross plane to ensure mass conservation across each marching plane. The finite difference equations forming the coefficient matrix are ordered such that the surface normal velocity is specified on all the solid walls; unlike external flows, a pressure boundary condition in the cross plane is not required. Since continuity is directly satisfied at all points in the flow domain, the first order momentum equations can be solved directly for the pressure without the need for a Poisson pressure correction equation. The procedure developed herein can also be applied with periodic boundary conditions. The analysis is given for general compressible flows. Incompressible flow solutions are obtained, for straight and curved ducts of square cross section, to validate the procedure. These solutions are used to demonstrate the applicability of the RNS scheme, with the improved boundary conditions for internal flows with strong interaction, as would be encountered in ducts and turbomachinery geometries
