Solar thermal technology development: Estimated market size and energy cost savings. Volume 1: Executive summary

    Get PDF
Estimated future energy cost savings associated with the development of cost-competitive solar thermal technologies (STT) are discussed. Analysis is restricted to STT in electric applications for 16 high-insolation/high-energy-price states. The fuel price scenarios and three 1990 STT system costs are considered, reflecting uncertainty over future fuel prices and STT cost projections. STT R&D is found to be unacceptably risky for private industry in the absence of federal support. Energy cost savings were projected to range from 0to0 to 10 billion (1990 values in 1981 dollars), dependng on the system cost and fuel price scenario. Normal R&D investment risks are accentuated because the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) cartel can artificially manipulate oil prices and undercut growth of alternative energy sources. Federal participation in STT R&D to help capture the potential benefits of developing cost-competitive STT was found to be in the national interest

Definition of technology development missions for early space stations: Large space structures

    Get PDF
The objectives studied are the definition of the tested role of an early Space Station for the construction of large space structures. This is accomplished by defining the LSS technology development missions (TDMs) identified in phase 1. Design and operations trade studies are used to identify the best structural concepts and procedures for each TDMs. Details of the TDM designs are then developed along with their operational requirements. Space Station resources required for each mission, both human and physical, are identified. The costs and development schedules for the TDMs provide an indication of the programs needed to develop these missions

Early Historico-Botanical Records of the Oenotheras

    Get PDF
The present paper is an attempt to trace, as far as possible from available data, the history of the Oenotheras, particularly the large-flowered forms, in cultivation. An effort is also made to recognize, as far as this can be done, the precise characters of the various forms which have been figured or described during the last three centuries. Such records of course vary greatly in accuracy and value, for they are contemporaneous with the development of the science of botany itself. Judging from the number of polynomials applied to them by different authors, the Oenotheras would appear to have been as variable then as they are now. And I may say that my cultures of Oenotheras derived from various sources indicate that at present many of these forms are no less variable or mutable than the O. Analyses of the dynamic docking test system for advanced mission docking system test programs

    Get PDF
Results are given of analytical studies performed in support of the design, implementation, checkout and use of NASA's dynamic docking test system (DDTS). Included are analyses of simulator components, a list of detailed operational test procedures, a summary of simulator performance, and an analysis and comparison of docking dynamics and loads obtained by test and analysis

Leaf Mining Insects and Their Parasitoids in the Old-Growth Forest of the Huron Mountains

    Get PDF
Leaf mining insects in an old-growth forest along the south central shore of Lake Superior in Michigan are documented. We present the results of a 13-year survey of leaf mining species, larval hosts, seasonal occurrence, and parasitoids, as well as report biological observations. Representative larvae, mines, adults, and parasitoids were preserved. Among the larval host associations, 15 are reported as new. Additionally, 42 parasitoid taxa were identified resulting in six first reports from the New World and 32 new host associations. Two undescribed species (Gelechiidae and Figitidae) discovered through this research were described in earlier publications
