    Lesões Cutâneas Acrais Agudas Inflamatórias Vasculares Reativas e SARS-CoV-2

    Introduction: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) predominantly affects the respiratory system, but there have been many reports of skin involvement. Several cutaneous manifestations associated with COVID-19 have been identified, including acral lesions (pernio-like), which we intend to better characterize in this study. Methods: Demographic, clinical and major histopathologic characteristics of acral skin lesions occurring during the acute infection stage of COVID-19 disease were evaluated in this survey conducted in the Dermatology Division of Santa Casa Hospital Complex, Federal University of Health Sciences, Porto Alegre, Brazil. Results: In the present study, we evaluated eight female patients with acute SARS-CoV-2 infection confirmed by PCR with acral skin lesions including pernio-like. The mean age was 43.6 and with no other acute disease, who had a good outcome with need for hospitalization only in 2 cases. Pernio-like lesions were observed under hot weather conditions in patients who denied any previous history of similar cutaneous manifestations. Some acral lesions resembled those of lupus erythematosus and of herpes simplex paronychia, but laboratory tests were negative for those conditions. Unusual nail involvement was present, characterized by half-moon shaped erythematous bands at the distal margin of the lunula. Conclusion: Recognition of these skin lesions is important in that they could be potential markers, aiding in the diagnosis and prognosis of COVID-19 disease.Introdução: A doença coronavírus 2019 (COVID-19) afeta predominantemente o sistema respiratório, porém há múltiplos relatos de comprometimento da pele. Várias manifestações cutâneas foram identificadas, incluindo as de padrão acral (tipo eritema pérnio), as quais pretendemos caracterizar melhor neste estudo. Métodos: As principais características demográficas, clínicas e histopatológicas das lesões cutâneas acrais que ocorreram na fase aguda da infecção pela COVID-19 foram avaliadas nesta pesquisa realizada no Departamento de Dermatologia do Complexo Hospitalar Santa Casa e Universidade Federal de Ciências da Saúde de Porto Alegre, Brasil. Resultados: No presente estudo, avaliamos oito casos de infecção aguda por SARS-CoV-2 confirmados por PCR, com lesões cutâneas acrais incluindo aquelas tipo eritema pernio. Eram oito mulheres, com idade média de 43,6 anos, sem outra doença aguda, que tiveram uma boa evolução clínica com necessidade de hospitalização em apenas dois casos. Foram identificadas manifestações tipo eritema pérnio, surgidas em períodos onde o clima era de temperaturas elevadas, em pacientes que negaram quadros semelhantes prévios. Houve casos de lesões acrais semelhantes a lúpus eritematoso e paroníquia herpética cuja investigação laboratorial foi negativa para tais patologias. Evidenciaram-se inusi- tados acometimentos ungueais, em forma de meia-lua, com bandas eritematosas circundando a margem distal da lúnula. Conclusão: O reconhecimento destas lesões dermatológicas é importante, pois podem se revelar potenciais marcadores e auxiliarem no diagnóstico e prognóstico da doença COVID-19

    Experimental Demonstration of Staggered CAP Modulation for Low Bandwidth Red-Emitting Polymer-LED based Visible Light Communications

    In this paper we experimentally demonstrate, for the first time, staggered carrier-less amplitude and phase (sCAP) modulation for visible light communication systems based on polymer light-emitting diodes emitting at ~639 nm. The key advantage offered by sCAP in comparison to conventional multiband CAP is its full use of the available spectrum. In this work, we compare sCAP, which utilises four orthogonal filters to generate the signal, with a conventional 4-band multi-CAP system and on-off keying (OOK). We transmit each modulation format with equal energy and present a record un-coded transmission speed of ~6 Mb/s. This represents gains of 25% and 65% over the achievable rate using 4-CAP and OOK, respectively.Comment: 6 pages, 9 figures, IEEE ICC 2019 conferenc

    A film-forming graphene/diketopyrrolopyrrole covalent hybrid with far-red optical features: Evidence of photo-stability

    A dianiline derivative of a symmetric donor-acceptor-donor diketopyrrolopyrrole-based dye is employed for the two-sided covalent functionalization of liquid exfoliated few layers graphene flakes, through a direct arylation reaction. The resulting nanohybrid features the properties of a polymeric species, being solution-processed into homogeneous thin films, featuring a pronounced red-shift of the main absorption band with respect to the model dye unit and energy levels comparable to those of common diketopyrrolopyrrole-based polymers. A good electrical conductivity and the absence of radical signals generated after intense white light illumination, as probed through electron paramagnetic resonance, suggest a possible future application of this composite ma- terial in the field of photoprotective, antistatic layers with tunable colors

    Chromoblastomycosis after a leech bite complicated by myiasis: a case report

    Background Chromoblastomycosis is a chronic mycotic infection, most common in the tropics and subtropics, following traumatic fungal implantation. Case presentation A 72 year-old farmer was admitted to Luang Namtha Provincial Hospital, northern Laos, with a growth on the left lower leg which began 1 week after a forefoot leech bite 10 years previously. He presented with a cauliflower-like mass and plaque-like lesions on his lower leg/foot and cellulitis with a purulent tender swelling of his left heel. Twenty-two Chrysomya bezziana larvae were extracted from his heel. PCR of a biopsy of a left lower leg nodule demonstrated Fonsecaea pedrosoi, monophora, or F. nubica. He was successfully treated with long term terbinafin plus itraconazole pulse-therapy and local debridement. Conclusions Chromoblastomycosis is reported for the first time from Laos. It carries the danger of bacterial and myiasis superinfection. Leech bites may facilitate infection.This article is published under license to BioMed Central Ltd.     Perspectives and Emotional Experiences of Patients With Chronic Myeloid Leukemia During ENESTPath Clinical Trial and Treatment-Free Remission: Rationale and Protocol of the Italian Substudy

    Achievement of deep molecular response following treatment with a tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI) allows for treatment-free remission (TFR) in many patients with chronic myeloid leukemia (CML). Successful TFR is defined as the achievement of a sustained molecular response after cessation of ongoing TKI therapy. The phase 3 ENESTPath study was designed to determine the required optimal duration of consolidation treatment with the second-generation TKI, nilotinib 300 mg twice-daily, to remain in successful TFR without relapse after entering TFR for 12 months. The purpose of this Italian ‘patient’s voice CML’ substudy was to evaluate patients’ psycho-emotional characteristics and quality of life through their experiences of stopping treatment with nilotinib and entering TFR. The purpose of the present contribution is to early present the study protocol of an ongoing study to the scientific community, in order to describe the study rationale and to extensively present the study methodology. Patients aged ≥18 years with a confirmed diagnosis of Philadelphia chromosome positive BCR-ABL1+ CML in chronic phase and treated with front-line imatinib for a minimum of 24 months from the enrollment were eligible. Patients consenting to participate the substudy will have quality of life questionnaires and in-depth qualitative interviews conducted. The substudy will include both qualitative and quantitative design aspects to evaluate the psychological outcomes as assessed via patients’ emotional experience during and after stopping nilotinib therapy. Randomization is hypothesized to be a timepoint of higher psychological alert or distress when compared to consolidation and additionally any improvement in health-related quality of life (HRQoL) due to nilotinib treatment is expected across the timepoints (from consolidation, to randomization, and TFR). An association is also expected between dysfunctional coping strategies, such as detachments and certain personality traits, and psychological distress and HRQoL impairments. Better HRQoL outcomes are expected in TFR compared to the end of consolidation. This substudy is designed for in-depth assessment of all potential psycho-emotional variables and aims to determine the need for personalized patient care and counselling, and also guide clinicians to consider the psychological well-being of patients who are considering treatment termination.     The European Reference Genome Atlas: piloting a decentralised approach to equitable biodiversity genomics.

    ABSTRACT: A global genome database of all of Earth’s species diversity could be a treasure trove of scientific discoveries. However, regardless of the major advances in genome sequencing technologies, only a tiny fraction of species have genomic information available. To contribute to a more complete planetary genomic database, scientists and institutions across the world have united under the Earth BioGenome Project (EBP), which plans to sequence and assemble high-quality reference genomes for all ∼1.5 million recognized eukaryotic species through a stepwise phased approach. As the initiative transitions into Phase II, where 150,000 species are to be sequenced in just four years, worldwide participation in the project will be fundamental to success. As the European node of the EBP, the European Reference Genome Atlas (ERGA) seeks to implement a new decentralised, accessible, equitable and inclusive model for producing high-quality reference genomes, which will inform EBP as it scales. To embark on this mission, ERGA launched a Pilot Project to establish a network across Europe to develop and test the first infrastructure of its kind for the coordinated and distributed reference genome production on 98 European eukaryotic species from sample providers across 33 European countries. Here we outline the process and challenges faced during the development of a pilot infrastructure for the production of reference genome resources, and explore the effectiveness of this approach in terms of high-quality reference genome production, considering also equity and inclusion. The outcomes and lessons learned during this pilot provide a solid foundation for ERGA while offering key learnings to other transnational and national genomic resource projects.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
