    Biomass gasification plant and syngas clean-up system

    Gasification is recognized as one of the most promising technologies to convert low quality fuels into more valuable ones. The principal problem related with the use of biomass in gasification processes is the high amount of tar released during the pyrolysis step. It is thus necessary to recover tar and to transform it in lighter combustible gas species such as CH4, CO and H-2. In this work the experimental results of a medium industrial scale plant fed with olive husk and having a capacity of 250 kWt are presented. The gasifier is composed by a up-draft reactor which is followed by a secondary fixed bed reactor filled with alluminium oxide spheres having high porosity dedicated to the tar conversion reactions. The syngas is then used to feed an internal combustion engine with a production of 60 kWe

    A Choice Set Modeling Approach to EU Issue Voting

    Focusing on the case of Britain, this paper evaluates the role that EU issue voting played in the 1992 and 1997 elections. EU issue voting arises when the issue of European integration has a direct in uence on vote choice by in uencing the attractiveness of party alternatives. In this paper, we explore two different ways in which such infleunce can occur: elimination of party alternatives due to their EU stance or moderator of the utility felt toward a subset of party alternatives that are all viable for the voter. These two in uences are explored through a choice set logistic regression model. The results suggest that EU issue voting increased from 1992 to 1997, especially in England. However, compared with traditional left-right issues, the influence of EU issue voting remained modest even in 1997, when public opinion had taken a Euroskeptic turn and when the Conservative party was seen as much closer than Labour on this issue

    On the X-ray feature associated with the Guitar Nebula

    Context: A mysterious X-ray nebula, showing a remarkably linear geometry, was recently discovered close to the Guitar Nebula, the bow-shock nebula associated with B2224+65, which is the fastest pulsar known. The nature of this X-ray feature is unknown, and even its association with pulsar B2224+65 is unclear. Aims: We attempt to develop a self-consistent scenario to explain the complex phenomenology of this object. Methods: We assume that the highest energy electrons accelerated at the termination shock escape from the bow shock and diffuse into the ambient medium, where they emit synchrotron X-rays. The linear geometry should reflect the plane-parallel geometry of its ambient field. Results: We estimate the Lorentz factor of the X-ray emitting electrons and the strength of the magnetic field. The former (~10^8) is close to its maximum possible value, while the latter, at ~45 uG, is higher than typical interstellar values and must have been amplified in some way. The magnetic field must also be turbulent to some degree to trap the electrons sufficiently for synchrotron X-ray emission to occur effectively. We propose a self-consistent scenario in which, by some streaming instability, the electrons themselves generate a turbulent field in which they then diffuse. Some numerical coincidences are explained, and tests are proposed to verify our scenario. Conclusions: Electron leaking may be common in the majority of pulsar bow-shock nebulae, even though the X-ray nebulosity in general is too diffuse to be detectable.Comment: 4 pages.     Reduction of gait abnormalities in type 2 diabetic patients due to physical activity: a quantitative evaluation based on statistical gait analysis

    The aim of this study is the objective assessment of gait abnormalities in diabetic patients and the quantification of the benefits of physical activity in improving the gait quality. Patients were equipped with foot-switches and knee goniometers and were asked to walk at their natural pace for 2.5 minutes. A statistical gait analysis was performed extracting from hundreds of strides the ‘atypical' cycles, i.e. the cycles which do not show the usual sequence of gait phases (heel contact, flat foot contact, push off, swing), the duration of the heel contact phase and the knee kinematics in the sagittal plane. A sample population of 27 non-neuropathic type 2 diabetic patients was examined before and after attending a light-intensity physical activity program that lasted four months. A fuzzy classifier was used to assign a score to the gait abnormalities of each patient in baseline conditions and after the program completion. More than 50% of the subjects reduced significantly their gait abnormalities and, on the average, the most frequent improvements were the reduction of atypical cycles and heel contact duration. Furthermore we found that, in basal conditions, the left side is more affected by gait abnormalities than the right one (P < 0.003

    Grazing impact on soil chemical and biological properties under different plant cover types in a mountain area of Southern Italy.

    Grazing can contribute to soil degradation by compaction due to roaming of livestock and loss of herbaceous cover, affecting also soil microbial community. Aim of this study was to assess grazing impact on soil microbial community and nutrient status under different plant cover types (i.e., fernery, chestnut wood, garigue). Grazed and ungrazed soils were analysed for water holding capacity, pH, organic carbon, N, S, K, Mg, Fe, Mn, Zn and Cu content, microbial biomass, fungal mycelium and potential respiration. Moreover, some ecophysiological indices, as microbial quotient, coefficient of endogenous mineralization (CEM), metabolic quotient (qCO2) and fungal fraction of microbial carbon were calculated. The results of present study showed that a moderate intensity grazing had low or no impact on chemical characteristics of soils and affects microbial community mainly in grazed areas with lower vegetation cover and lower content of nutrient and organic carbon, compared to areas with a thick layer of vegetation

    Atmospheric monitoring in the mm and sub-mm bands for cosmological observations: CASPER2

    Cosmological observations from ground at millimetre and sub-millimetre wavelengths are affected by atmospheric absorption and consequent emission. The low and high frequency (sky noise) fluctuations of atmospheric performance imply careful observational strategies and/or instrument technical solutions. Measurements of atmospheric emission spectra are necessary for accurate calibration procedures as well as for site testing statistics. CASPER2, an instrument to explore the 90-450 GHz (3-15 1/cm) spectral region, was developed and verified its operation in the Alps. A Martin-Puplett Interferometer (MPI) operates comparing sky radiation, coming from a field of view (fov) of 28 arcminutes (FWHM) collected by a 62-cm in diameter Pressman-Camichel telescope, with a reference source. The two output ports of the interferometer are detected by two bolometers cooled down to 300 mK inside a wet cryostat. Three different and complementary interferometric techniques can be performed with CASPER2: Amplitude Modulation (AM), Fast-Scan (FS) and Phase Modulation (PM). An altazimuthal mount allows the sky pointing, possibly co-alligned to the optical axis of the 2.6-m in diameter telescope of MITO (Millimetre and Infrared Testagrigia Observatory, Italy). Optimal timescale to average acquired spectra is inferred by Allan variance analysis at 5 fiducial frequencies. We present the motivation for and design of the atmospheric spectrometer CASPER2. The adopted procedure to calibrate the instrument and preliminary performance of the instrument are described. Instrument capabilities were checked during the summer observational campaign at MITO in July 2010 by measuring atmospheric emission spectra with the three different procedures.Comment: 11 pages, 9 figures, 2 tables, Accepted for publication in MNRA

    A Spitzer view of protoplanetary disks in the gamma Velorum cluster

    We present new Spitzer Space Telescope observations of stars in the young ~5 Myr gamma Velorum stellar cluster. Combining optical and 2MASS photometry, we have selected 579 stars as candidate members of the cluster. With the addition of the Spitzer mid-infrared data, we have identified 5 debris disks around A-type stars, and 5-6 debris disks around solar-type stars, indicating that the strong radiation field in the cluster does not completely suppress the production of planetesimals in the disks of cluster members. However, we find some evidence that the frequency of circumstellar primordial disks is lower, and the IR flux excesses are smaller than for disks around stellar populations with similar ages. This could be evidence for a relatively fast dissipation of circumstellar dust by the strong radiation field from the highest mass star(s) in the cluster. Another possibility is that gamma Velorum stellar cluster is slightly older than reported ages and the the low frequency of primordial disks reflects the fast disk dissipation observed at ~5 Myr.Comment: Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal: 32 pages; 11 Figure

    THE RECOGNITION OF HERITAGE QUALITIES FROM FEATURE-BASED DIGITAL PROCEDURES IN THE ANALYSIS OF HISTORICAL URBAN CONTEXTS

    Abstract. The documentation of historical architectural heritage in urban contexts involves the consideration of planning adaptations of settlements and landscape, related to the identification of formal and semantic qualities. In particular, the identification of cultural significance of Heritage building units can find correspondence in geometrical features that are documented within the urban asset. In this way, urban monitoring, in an increasingly automated way, can support the identification and characterization of semantic elements also regarding Heritage objects, observing the invariance and conservation of formal constants in urban dynamic assets.Considering the experimental case study of Solikamsk historical center, belonging to Upper Kama route (Russia), a multi-instrumental strategy of spatial survey is applied, evaluating data coverages and resolutions. This analysis defines a preliminary framework to develop further processes of 3D triangulation and reality-based meshing. The morpho-metric detail of final models constitutes the basis for the computing test of feature-based procedures, including regions recognition and mesh segmentation, which can be calibrated for shape qualities and scales, reaching a preliminary modeling classification of Heritage and urban building units
