Brauer-Thrall for totally reflexive modules over local rings of higher dimension
Let be a commutative Noetherian local ring. Assume that has a pair
of exact zerodivisors such that and all totally
reflexive -modules are free. We show that the first and second
Brauer--Thrall type theorems hold for the category of totally reflexive
-modules. More precisely, we prove that, for infinitely many integers ,
there exists an indecomposable totally reflexive -module of multiplicity
. Moreover, if the residue field of is infinite, we prove that there
exist infinitely many isomorphism classes of indecomposable totally reflexive

Role of microRNAs in the age-associated decline of pancreatic beta cell function in rat islets

Please cite the published version which is available via the DOI link in this record.AIMS/HYPOTHESIS: Ageing can lead to reduced insulin sensitivity and loss of pancreatic beta cell function, predisposing individuals to the development of diabetes. The aim of this study was to assess the contribution of microRNAs (miRNAs) to age-associated beta cell dysfunction. METHODS: The global mRNA and miRNA profiles of 3- and 12-month-old rat islets were collected by microarray. The functional impact of age-associated differences in miRNA expression was investigated by mimicking the observed changes in primary beta cells from young animals. RESULTS: Beta cells from 12-month-old rats retained normal insulin content and secretion, but failed to proliferate in response to mitotic stimuli. The islets of these animals displayed modifications at the level of several miRNAs, including upregulation of miR-34a, miR-124a and miR-383, and downregulation of miR-130b and miR-181a. Computational analysis of the transcriptomic modifications observed in the islets of 12-month-old rats revealed that the differentially expressed genes were enriched for miR-34a and miR-181a targets. Indeed, the induction of miR-34a and reduction of miR-181a in the islets of young animals mimicked the impaired beta cell proliferation observed in old animals. mRNA coding for alpha-type platelet-derived growth factor receptor, which is critical for compensatory beta cell mass expansion, is directly inhibited by miR34a and is likely to be at least partly responsible for the effects of this miRNA. CONCLUSIONS/INTERPRETATION: Changes in the level of specific miRNAs that occur during ageing affect the proliferative capacity of beta cells. Large Polarization and Susceptibilities in Artificial Morphotropic Phase Boundary PbZr1−xTixO3 Superlattices
The ability to produce atomically precise, artificial oxide heterostructures allows for the possibility of producing exotic phases and enhanced susceptibilities not found in parent materials. Typical ferroelectric materials either exhibit large saturation polarization away from a phase boundary or large dielectric susceptibility near a phase boundary. Both large ferroelectric polarization and dielectric permittivity are attained wherein fully epitaxial (PbZr0.8Ti0.2O3)n/(PbZr0.4Ti0.6O3)2n (n = 2, 4, 6, 8, 16 unit cells) superlattices are produced such that the overall film chemistry is at the morphotropic phase boundary, but constitutive layers are not. Long- (n ≥ 6) and short-period (n = 2) superlattices reveal large ferroelectric saturation polarization (Ps = 64 µC cm−2) and small dielectric permittivity (εr ≈ 400 at 10 kHz). Intermediate-period (n = 4) superlattices, however, exhibit both large ferroelectric saturation polarization (Ps = 64 µC cm−2) and dielectric permittivity (εr = 776 at 10 kHz). First-order reversal curve analysis reveals the presence of switching distributions for each parent layer and a third, interfacial layer wherein superlattice periodicity modulates the volume fraction of each switching distribution and thus the overall material response. This reveals that deterministic creation of artificial superlattices is an effective pathway for designing materials with enhanced responses to applied bias
Implications of the problem orientated medical record (POMR) for research using electronic GP databases: a comparison of the Doctors Independent Network Database (DIN) and the General Practice Research Database (GPRD).
Background
The General Practice Research Database (GPRD) and Doctor's Independent Network Database (DIN), are large electronic primary care databases compiled in the UK during the 1990s. They provide a valuable resource for epidemiological and health services research. GPRD (based on VAMP) presents notes as a series of discrete episodes, whereas DIN is based on a system (MEDITEL) that used a Problem Orientated Medical Record (POMR) which links prescriptions to diagnostic problems. We have examined the implications for research of these different underlying philosophies.
Methods
Records of 40,183 children from 141 practices in DIN and 76,310 from 464 practices in GRPD who were followed to age 5 were used to compare the volume of recording of prescribing and diagnostic codes in the two databases. To assess the importance and additional value of the POMR within DIN, the appropriateness of diagnostic linking to skin emollient prescriptions was investigated.
Results
Variation between practices for both the number of days on which prescriptions were issued and diagnoses were recorded was marked in both databases. Mean number of "prescription days" during the first 5 years of life was similar in DIN (19.5) and in GPRD (19.8), but the average number of "diagnostic days" was lower in DIN (15.8) than in GPRD (22.9). Adjustment for linkage increased the average "diagnostic days" to 23.1 in DIN. 32.7% of emollient prescriptions in GPRD appeared with an eczema diagnosis on the same day compared to only 19.4% in DIN; however, 86.4% of prescriptions in DIN were linked to an earlier eczema diagnosis. More specifically 83% of emollient prescriptions appeared under a problem heading of eczema in the 121 practices that were using problem headings satisfactorily.
Conclusion
Prescribing records in DIN and GPRD are very similar, but the usage of diagnostic codes is more parsimonious in DIN because of its POMR structure. Period prevalence rates will be underestimated in DIN unless this structure is taken into account. The advantage of the POMR is that in 121 of 141 practices using problem headings as intended, most prescriptions can be linked to a problem heading providing a specific reason for their issue

Itinerant ferromagnetism and intrinsic anomalous Hall effect in amorphous iron-germanium
The amorphous iron-germanium system (a-FexGe1-x) lacks long-range structural order and hence lacks a meaningful Brillouin zone. The magnetization of a-FexGe1-x is well explained by the Stoner model for Fe concentrations x above the onset of magnetic order around x=0.4, indicating that the local order of the amorphous structure preserves the spin-split density of states of the Fe-3d states sufficiently to polarize the electronic structure despite k being a bad quantum number. Measurements reveal an enhanced anomalous Hall resistivity ρxyAH relative to crystalline FeGe; this ρxyAH is compared to density-functional theory calculations of the anomalous Hall conductivity to resolve its underlying mechanisms. The intrinsic mechanism, typically understood as the Berry curvature integrated over occupied k states but shown here to be equivalent to the density of curvature integrated over occupied energies in aperiodic materials, dominates the anomalous Hall conductivity of a-FexGe1-x (0.38≤x≤0.61). The density of curvature is the sum of spin-orbit correlations of local orbital states and can hence be calculated with no reference to k space. This result and the accompanying Stoner-like model for the intrinsic anomalous Hall conductivity establish a unified understanding of the underlying physics of the anomalous Hall effect in both crystalline and disordered systems
Taking the self out of self-rule
Many philosophers believe that agents are self-ruled only when ruled by their (authentic) selves. Though this view is rarely argued for explicitly, one tempting line of thought suggests that self-rule is just obviously equivalent to rule by the self. However, the plausibility of this thought evaporates upon close examination of the logic of ‘self-rule’ and similar reflexives. Moreover, attempts to rescue the account by recasting it in negative terms are unpromising. In light of these problems, this paper instead proposes that agents are self-ruled only when not ruled by others. One reason for favouring this negative social view is its ability to yield plausible conclusions concerning various manipulation cases that are notoriously problematic for nonsocial accounts of self-rule. A second reason is that the account conforms with ordinary usage. It is concluded that self-rule may be best thought of as an essentially social concept
Determining Training Needs for Cloud Infrastructure Investigations using I-STRIDE
As more businesses and users adopt cloud computing services, security
vulnerabilities will be increasingly found and exploited. There are many
technological and political challenges where investigation of potentially
criminal incidents in the cloud are concerned. Security experts, however, must
still be able to acquire and analyze data in a methodical, rigorous and
forensically sound manner. This work applies the STRIDE asset-based risk
assessment method to cloud computing infrastructure for the purpose of
identifying and assessing an organization's ability to respond to and
investigate breaches in cloud computing environments. An extension to the
STRIDE risk assessment model is proposed to help organizations quickly respond
to incidents while ensuring acquisition and integrity of the largest amount of
digital evidence possible. Further, the proposed model allows organizations to
assess the needs and capacity of their incident responders before an incident

Minimising ambient illumination via ambient subtraction: Smartphone assessment of jaundice in liver patients via sclera images
Using smartphone images to quantify color presents a noninvasive way to assess jaundice and other color-related biomarkers of the human body. Here we focus on assessing jaundice through accurate bilirubin measurement in adult liver patients, the first time optical imaging has been applied to this cohort. These patients can suffer from very high levels of bilirubin, indicating their severity of liver disease. A smartphone assessment technique for jaundice based around the color of the sclera (white of the eye) extracted from images is being developed, as smartphone imaging enables cheap, non-invasive and quantitative readings. Variations in ambient light cause large changes to recorded pixel values so must be accounted for to ensure that any changes detected are due to changes in jaundice level. Here we suggest the use of an ambient subtraction approach to minimise the effects of ambient light. Pairs of flash/no-flash images are captured and the extracted values subtracted to yield data as though under a pure flash illumination. We present data demonstrating the technique with a group of healthy adult volunteers. We also present data from a patient study involving adults with liver disease. Images were captured and the bilirubin (jaundice) level predicted from these images before and after subtraction was compared to the ground truth value obtained via blood test. The linear correlation coefficient increased from 0.47 to 0.85 (p<0.001 in both cases) upon application of subtraction, demonstrating the effectiveness of the technique
