Product state control of bi-alkali chemical reactions

We consider ultracold, chemically reactive scattering collisions of the diatomic molecules KRb. When two such molecules collide in an ultracold gas, we find that they are energetically forbidden from reacting to form the trimer species K2_2Rb or Rb2_2K, hence can only react via the bond-swapping reaction 2KRb \to K2_2 + Rb2_2. Moreover, the tiny energy released in this reaction can in principle be set to zero by applying electric or microwave fields, implying a means of controlling the available reaction channels in a chemical reaction.Comment: 4 pages double column, 2 figures, 2 table

A Low Cost and Labor Efficient Method for Rearing Black Cutworms (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae)

The black cutworm, Agrotis ipsilon (Hufnagel), has been and continues to be the subject of many biological and control studies in the north-central states. Interest in this insect can often be traced to its status as a major, but sporadic pest of field com in the region

Monte Carlo simulation of wave sensing with a short pulse radar

    Get PDF
A Monte Carlo simulation is used to study the ocean wave sensing potential of a radar which scatters short pulses at small off-nadir angles. In the simulation, realizations of a random surface are created commensurate with an assigned probability density and power spectrum. Then the signal scattered back to the radar is computed for each realization using a physical optics analysis which takes wavefront curvature and finite radar-to-surface distance into account. In the case of a Pierson-Moskowitz spectrum and a normally distributed surface, reasonable assumptions for a fully developed sea, it has been found that the cumulative distribution of time intervals between peaks in the scattered power provides a measure of surface roughness. This observation is supported by experiments

    Advanced aircraft engine materials trends

Recent activities of the Lewis Research Center are reviewed which are directed toward developing materials for rotating hot section components for aircraft gas turbines. Turbine blade materials activities are directed at increasing metal temperatures approximately 100 C compared to current directionally solidified alloys by use of oxide dispersion strengthening or tungsten alloy wire reinforcement of nickel or iron base superalloys. The application of thermal barrier coatings offers a promise of increasing gas temperatures an additional 100 C with current cooling technology. For turbine disk alloys, activities are directed toward reducing the cost of turbine disks by 50 percent through near net shape fabrication of prealloyed powders as well as towards improved performance. In addition, advanced alloy concepts and fabrication methods for dual alloy disks are being studied as having potential for improving the life of future high performance disks and reducing the amount of strategic materials required in these components

Assessment of a satellite power system and six alternative technologies

    Get PDF
The satellite power system is assessed in comparison to six alternative technologies. The alternatives are: central-station terrestrial photovoltaic systems, conventional coal-fired power plants, coal-gasification/combined-cycle power plants, light water reactor power plants, liquid-metal fast-breeder reactors, and fusion. The comparison is made regarding issues of cost and performance, health and safety, environmental effects, resources, socio-economic factors, and institutional issues. The criteria for selecting the issues and the alternative technologies are given, and the methodology of the comparison is discussed. Brief descriptions of each of the technologies considered are included

Enhancement of the ν=5/2\nu = 5/2 Fractional Quantum Hall State in a Small In-Plane Magnetic Field

    Get PDF
Using a 50-nm width, ultra-clean GaAs/AlGaAs quantum well, we have studied the Landau level filling factor ν=5/2\nu = 5/2 fractional quantum Hall effect in a perpendicular magnetic field BB \sim 1.7 T and determined its dependence on tilted magnetic fields. Contrary to all previous results, the 5/2 resistance minimum and the Hall plateau are found to strengthen continuously under an increasing tilt angle 0<θ<250 < \theta < 25^\circ (corresponding to an in-plane magnetic field 0 << BB_\parallel <0.8< 0.8 T). In the same range of θ\theta the activation gaps of both the 7/3 and the 8/3 states are found to increase with tilt. The 5/2 state transforms into a compressible Fermi liquid upon tilt angle θ>60\theta > 60^\circ, and the composite fermion series [2+p/(2p±1)p/(2p\pm1)], p=p = 1, 2 can be identified. Based on our results, we discuss the relevance of a Skyrmion spin texture at ν=5/2\nu = 5/2 associated with small Zeeman energy in wide quantum wells, as proposed by Woˊ\acute{\text o}js etet alal., Phys.
