Software development for the VLA-GDSCC telemetry array project

    Get PDF
Software for the VLA-GDSCC Telemetry Array (VGTA) Project is being developed in a new manner. Within the Radio Frequency and Microwave Subsystems Section, most microprocessor software has been developed using Intel hardware and software development systems. The VGTA software, however, is being developed using IBM PCs running consumer-oriented software. Utility software and procedures have been generated which allow the software developed on the IBM PCs to be transferred and run on a multibus 8086 computer

A superior process for forming titanium hydrogen isotopic films

    Get PDF
Process forms stoichiometric, continuous, strongly bonded titanium hydrogen isotopic films. Films have thermal and electrical conductivities approximately the same as bulk pure titanium, ten times greater than those of usual thin films

Measuring the Superfluid Fraction of an Ultracold Atomic Gas

We propose a method to measure the superfluid fraction of an atomic gas. The method involves the use of a vector potential generated by optical beams with non-zero angular momentum to simulate uniform rotation. The induced change in angular momentum of the atomic gas can be measured spectroscopically. This allows a direct determination of the superfluid fraction.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figure

Almost-zero-energy Eigenvalues of Some Broken Supersymmetric Systems

For a quantum mechanical system with broken supersymmetry, we present a simple method of determining the ground state when the corresponding energy eigenvalue is sufficiently small. A concise formula is derived for the approximate ground state energy in an associated, well-separated, asymmetric double-well-type potential. Our discussion is also relevant for the analysis of the fermion bound state in the kink-antikink scalar background.Comment: revised version, to be pubilshed in PR

The use of Kodak aerochrome infrared color film, type 2443, as a remote sensing tool

    Get PDF
An infrared color film, Kodak Aerochrome, type 2443, has replaced the 8443 film. The 2443 has lower contrast than the 8443 film, and allows deeper probing into areas that appear as solid black shadows on the 8443 film. The cyan layer of 2443 is approximately 1 1/2 stops slower, at a density of 1.4, than the yellow and magenta emulsion layers

X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy studies of non-stoichiometric superconducting NbB2+x

Polycrystalline samples of NbB2+x with nominal composition (B/Nb) = 2.0, 2.1, 2.2, 2.3, 2.4 and 2.5 were studied by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The spectra revealed Nb and B oxides on the surface of the samples, mainly B2O3 and Nb2O5. After Ar ion etching the intensity of Nb and B oxides decreased. The Nb 3d5/2 and B 1s core levels associated with the chemical states (B/Nb) were identified and they do not change with etching time. The Binding Energy of the Nb 3d5/2 and B 1s core levels increase as boron content increases, suggesting a positive chemical shift in the core levels. On the other hand, analysis of Valence Band spectra showed that the contribution of the Nb 4d states slightly decreased while the contribution of the B 2p(pi) states increased as the boron content increased. As a consequence, the electronic and superconducting properties were substantially modified, in good agreement with band-structure calculations.Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures, 1 tabl

Design of Ge/SiGe quantum-confined Stark effect electroabsorption heterostructures for CMOS compatible photonics

    Get PDF
We describe a combined 6×6 k.p and one-band effective mass modelling tool to calculate absorption spectra in Ge–SiGe multiple quantum well (MQW) heterostructures. We find good agreement with experimentally measured absorption spectra of Ge–SiGe MQW structures described previously in the literature, proving its predictive capability, and the simulation tool is used for the analysis and design of electroabsorption modulators. We employ strain-engineering in Ge–SiGe MQW systems to design structures for modulation at 1310 nm and 1550 nm
