Magnetic impurities in the honeycomb Kitaev model

We study the effect of coupling magnetic impurities to the honeycomb lattice spin-1/2 Kitaev model in its spin liquid phase. We show that a spin-S impurity coupled to the Kitaev model is associated with an unusual Kondo effect with an intermediate coupling unstable fixed point K_c J/S separating topologically distinct sectors of the Kitaev model. We also show that the massless spinons in the spin liquid mediate an interaction of the form S_{i\alpha}^{2}S_{j\beta}^{2}/R_{ij}^{3} between distant impurities unlike the usual dipolar RKKY interaction S_{i\alpha}S_{j\alpha}/R_{ij}^{3} noted in various 2D impurity problems with a pseudogapped density of states of the spin bath. Furthermore, this long-range interaction is possible only if the impurities (a) couple to more than one neighboring spin on the host lattice and (b) the impurity spin is not a spin-1/2.$Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, Published versio

The effect of 0, 5, 7.5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 40, 50 and 80 mg/kg body weight of aqueous extract of Gracinia indica administered intraperitoneally was studied on the radiation-induced mortality in mice exposed to 6 Gray of γ-radiation. Treatment of mice with different doses of G.indica consequently for five days delayed the onset of mortality and reduced symptoms of radiation sickness when compared with the non-drug treated irradiated controls. The highest protection against gastrointestinal (GI) tract death was observed for 10g of Garcinia indica, where the highest number of survivors were reported up to 9 days post radiation, while 10mg/kg of Garcinia indica administered i.p. provided the best protection as evidenced by the highest number of survivors 30 days post-radiation in this group when compared to other doses of G. indica. Toxicity study showed that G. indica was non-toxic up to doses of 220 mg/kg bw, where no drug-induced mortality was observed. The LD50 dose i.p. of G. indica was found to be 250 mg/kg bw. Our study demonstrated the ability of G. indica as a good radio protective agent and the optimum protective dose was 1/25th of its LD50 dose

An Empirical study on Emotional Maturity among Teacher trainees and its Importance.

    Get PDF
Abstract Emotional maturity is a process which guides oneself to successfully balance ones entire emotional spectrum and thereby taking responsibility as to how one feels about oneself and see the world around. Hence, it is essential for teacher trainees to show emotional balance when they deal with the students around them. This paper tries to investigate emotional maturity among 4 year integrated teacher trainees and 2 year B.Ed teacher trainees based on their duration of course and gender. The data was collected using self-constructed emotional maturity scale and data was analysed using SPSS (Statistical package for Social Sciences) software. The paper discusses the results and states its importance for teacher trainees

Studies on the effect of ethanolic extract of propolis in BALB/c mice

Propolis is widely used since ages for the treatment of various ailments. Present study focussed on the toxicity profile of ethanolic extract of propolis on BALB/c mice. The effect of different concentrations of propolis (300, 500, 1000 mg/kg body weight) was analysed by studying the biochemical, haematological and histological changes in mice for 28 days. No significant difference in various parameters were observed in groups of mice treated with propolis and the normal control (p>0.05). Histological findings on liver, spleen, kidney and brain revealed normal architecture. The ethanolic extract of propolis did not produce significant toxic effect in mice and hence can be utilized for nutraceuticals formulations

Efficacy of different extracts of propolis against Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium: In vitro and in vivo study

Present study focussed on the antibacterial and antioxidative effect of honey bee propolis on typhoid causing bacteria i.e. Salmonella. Water, ethanol, methanol were used as solvents for making of extracts. Both Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) and Minimum Bactericidal Concentration (MBC) were calculated for all the three extracts. MIC of ethanolic extract of propolis was 160 mg/ml. It was 200 mg/ml for methanolic and 220mg/ml for wa-ter extracts respectively. Moreover, time kill analysis results confirmed that there was a significant reduction (p<0.05) in log count of bacteria when treated with ethanolic extraxt of propolis (3.98±0.15 log cfu/mL) and methanolic (4.66±0.05log cfu/mL) extract of propolis as compared to Salmonella control (7.72±0.03 log cfu/mL) in in vitro experiments. For the in vivo studies, BALB/c mice was used as an murine model of typhoid. Levels of different liver marker enzymes and antioxidants like Lipid peroxidation (LPO) and Reduced Glutathione (GSH) were observed in infected and all the treated groups. By comparing the results, it was concluded that ethanolic extract of propolis showed maximum antimicrobial activity as compare to the rest two. So the results of present study encourages the potential of ethanolic extract of propolis as an alternative treatment for typhoid and its use in combination with standard antibiotics can also be explored

Music - A remedy in Psychological Disorders (Manas Vikara)

One in four people in the world will be affected by psychological disorders (manasvikara) at some point in their lives - Geneva (WHO). Around 450 million people currently suffer from such conditions, placing psychological disorders (manas vikara) among the leading causes of ill-health and disability worldwide. Depressive disorders are already the fourth leading cause of the global disease burden. They are expected to rank second by 2020, behind ischemic heart disease but ahead of all other diseases. Constant exposure to severely stressful events, dangerous living conditions, exploitation, and cut- throat competitions, mismanaged life style are some main causes of manas vikara at present era. During the past few months, mental health has received public and media attention in an unprecedented manner. This was related to the release of the report of the National Mental Health Survey (NMHS). So mental illnesses are a real health issue, which means you can't treat them with lifestyle changes alone. In conjunction with a healthy lifestyle, though, your treatment options will work more effectively and you'll see more rapid change. Among all these there is a concept that music can play a tremendous role in manas vikara chikitsa which is also mentioned in our Ayurvedic compendias. Music is an age-old part of Ayurveda. Great composers of Indian classical music have attempted music therapy down the years. Legend has it that classical music Maestro Thyagaraja brought a dead person back to life with his composition

Role of Nutrition in Alcoholic Liver Disease: Summary of the Symposium at the ESBRA 2017 Congress.

    Get PDF
The symposium, "Role of Nutrition in Alcoholic Liver Disease", was held at the European Society for Biomedical Research on Alcoholism Congress on 9 October 2017 in Crete, Greece. The goal of the symposium was to highlight recent advances and developments in the field of alcohol and nutrition. The symposium was focused on experimental and clinical aspects in relation to the role of different types of dietary nutrients and malnutrition in the pathogenesis of alcoholic liver disease (ALD). The following is a summary of key research presented at this session. The speakers discussed the role of dietary fats and carbohydrates in the development and progression of alcohol-induced multi-organ pathology in animal models of ALD, analyzed novel nutrition-related therapeutics (specifically, betaine and zinc) in the treatment of ALD, and addressed clinical relevance of malnutrition and nutrition support in ALD. This summary of the symposium will benefit junior and senior faculty currently investigating alcohol-induced organ pathology as well as undergraduate, graduate, and post-graduate students and fellows
