    Analysis of Satellite Drag and Spin Decay Data

    Work was begun as an effort to obtain satellite drag and upper atmospheric wind data from a spinning spherical satellite to be launched from the space shuttle scheduled for the STS-11 flight. The satellite was an inflated sphere having high area-to-mass ratio which would result in measurable orbital decay due to aerodynamic drag forces experienced by the satellite in the Earth's upper atmosphere. The satellite would also experience a spin decay due to the aerodynamic torque acting to slow the satellite spinning. The original proposal was to develop data analysis procedures to be employed to extract the desired information. Work was performed concerning the data analysis procedure prior to the STS-11 launch; however, the major effort was to begin after the data had been obtained. Unfortunately, the launch of the inflatable sphere on STS-11 was a failure in that the sphere did not inflate properly and no data was obtained. The emphasis of the work planned under this effort was then changed to develop a proposal for a series of experiments similar to the one originally planned for STS-11

    High accuracy results for the energy levels of the molecular ions H2+, D2+ and HD+, up to J=2

    We present a nonrelativistic calculation of the rotation-vibration levels of the molecular ions H2+, D2+ and HD+, relying on the diagonalization of the exact three-body Hamiltonian. The J=2 levels are obtained with a very high accuracy of 10^{-14} a.u. (for most levels) representing an improvement by five orders of magnitude over previous calculations. The accuracy is also improved for the J=1 levels of H2+ and D2+ with respect to earlier works. Moreover, we have computed the sensitivities of the energy levels with respect to the mass ratios, allowing these levels to be used for metrological purposes.Comment: 11 page

    Age, growth, and food habit studies were done on 61 johnny darters, Etheostoma nigrum, 25 slenderhead darters, Percina phoxocephala, and 18 blacksided darters, P. maculata, taken from the Des Moines River, Boone County, Iowa, during the summer 1962. The growth rate of blacksided darter is faster than either of the other two species. Coefficients of condition, length-weight relationships, and body-scale relationships are similar for the three species. The food of all species is over 90% insect. Leeches and tapeworms parasitized the darters

    Although 117 fantail darters (Etheostoma flabellare) were collected from Bluff Creek, Boone County, Iowa, during summer 1962 and winter 1962-63, only 1 was found in the Des Moines River. Slenderhead darters occupy the similar riffle areas in the river. Female fantail darters were 18.7, 34.8, and 42.4 mm at the first through the third annuli, respectively, and male darters were 18.5, 36.7, 59.0, and 62.0 mm at the first through the fourth annuli, respectively. No females were found that had formed a fourth annulus. Average coefficient of condition for 104 fantail darters was 1.749. Length-weight relationships for males and females were statistically the same. Food of the fantail darter was 93% insects. The peak of the spawning period is probably in May
