Ballistic-Ohmic quantum Hall plateau transition in graphene pn junction
Recent quantum Hall experiments conducted on disordered graphene pn junction
provide evidence that the junction resistance could be described by a simple
Ohmic sum of the n and p mediums' resistances. However in the ballistic limit,
theory predicts the existence of chirality-dependent quantum Hall plateaus in a
pn junction. We show that two distinctively separate processes are required for
this ballistic-Ohmic plateau transition, namely (i) hole/electron Landau states
equilibration and (ii) valley iso-spin dilution of the incident Landau edge
state. These conclusions are obtained by a simple scattering theory argument,
and confirmed numerically by performing ensembles of quantum magneto-transport
calculations on a 0.1um-wide disordered graphene pn junction within the
tight-binding model. The former process is achieved by pn interface roughness,
where a pn interface disorder with a root-mean-square roughness of 10nm was
found to suffice under typical experimental conditions. The latter process is
mediated by extrinsic edge roughness for an armchair edge ribbon and by
intrinsic localized intervalley scattering centers at the edge of the pn
interface for a zigzag ribbon. In light of these results, we also examine why
higher Ohmic type plateaus are less likely to be observable in experiments.Comment: 9 pages, 6 figure
A New Hybrid Descent Method with Application to the Optimal Design of Finite Precision FIR Filters
In this paper, the problem of the optimal design of discrete coefficient FIR filters is considered. A novelhybrid descent method, consisting of a simulated annealing algorithm and a gradient-based method, isproposed. The simulated annealing algorithm operates on the space of orthogonal matrices and is used tolocate descent points for previously converged local minima. The gradient-based method is derived fromconverting the discrete problem to a continuous problem via the Stiefel manifold, where convergence canbe guaranteed. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed hybrid descent method, several numericalexamples show that better discrete filter designs can be sought via this hybrid descent method
Dictionary Learning under Symmetries via Group Representations
The dictionary learning problem can be viewed as a data-driven process to
learn a suitable transformation so that data is sparsely represented directly
from example data. In this paper, we examine the problem of learning a
dictionary that is invariant under a pre-specified group of transformations.
Natural settings include Cryo-EM, multi-object tracking, synchronization, pose
estimation, etc. We specifically study this problem under the lens of
mathematical representation theory. Leveraging the power of non-abelian Fourier
analysis for functions over compact groups, we prescribe an algorithmic recipe
for learning dictionaries that obey such invariances. We relate the dictionary
learning problem in the physical domain, which is naturally modelled as being
infinite dimensional, with the associated computational problem, which is
necessarily finite dimensional. We establish that the dictionary learning
problem can be effectively understood as an optimization instance over certain
matrix orbitopes having a particular block-diagonal structure governed by the
irreducible representations of the group of symmetries. This perspective
enables us to introduce a band-limiting procedure which obtains dimensionality
reduction in applications. We provide guarantees for our computational ansatz
to provide a desirable dictionary learning outcome. We apply our paradigm to
investigate the dictionary learning problem for the groups SO(2) and SO(3).
While the SO(2)-orbitope admits an exact spectrahedral description,
substantially less is understood about the SO(3)-orbitope. We describe a
tractable spectrahedral outer approximation of the SO(3)-orbitope, and
contribute an alternating minimization paradigm to perform optimization in this
setting. We provide numerical experiments to highlight the efficacy of our
approach in learning SO(3)-invariant dictionaries, both on synthetic and on

The Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement: Looking Ahead to the Next Steps
Pressure has been building for the conclusion of the 12-country Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) negotiations. Getting the deal done is important, but the TPP is not just another free trade agreement (FTA). It represents the chance to set a trade agenda for the future across a wide range of topics for countries throughout the Asia-Pacific region. This means that the agreement should not be settled in haste. More importantly, it also means that key decisions need to be reached about broader issues related to the institutional structure of the TPP. These decisions must be made now, before the deal is closed, on issues such as how to create the TPP as a living agreement, the formation of a TPP Secretariat, and the clarification of entry conditions for future members such as the People’s Republic of China (PRC). These choices must be made deliberately and carefully even while officials are struggling with reaching closure on the most highly sensitive issues still remaining in the agreement. It will not be easy, but wise decisions are necessary now to ensure the long-term success of the TPP
Magnetic Field Dependence of the Paramagnetic to the High Temperature Magnetically Ordered Phase Transition in CeB6
We have measured the magnetic field dependence of the paramagnetic to high
temperature magnetically ordered phase transition TQ(H) in CeB6 from 2 to 30 T
using cantilever magnetometry. It is found that the phase separation
temperature continuously increases in field with an increasingly positive
slope. In addition, we find that measurements in strong magnetic field

Improving the sensitivity of Higgs boson searches in the golden channel
Leptonic decays of the Higgs boson in the ZZ* channel yield what is known as
the golden channel due to its clean signature and good total invariant mass
resolution. In addition, the full kinematic distribution of the decay products
can be reconstructed, which, nonetheless, is not taken into account in
traditional search strategy relying only on measurements of the total invariant
mass. In this work we implement a type of multivariate analysis known as the
matrix element method, which exploits differences in the full production and
decay matrix elements between the Higgs boson and the dominant irreducible
background from q bar{q} -> ZZ*. Analytic expressions of the differential
distributions for both the signal and the background are also presented. We
perform a study for the Large Hadron Collider at sqrt{s}=7 TeV for Higgs masses
between 175 and 350 GeV. We find that, with an integrated luminosity of 2.5
fb^-1 or higher, improvements in the order of 10 - 20 % could be obtained for
both discovery significance and exclusion limits in the high mass region, where
the differences in the angular correlations between signal and background are

Bound States and Threshold Resonances in Quantum Wires with Circular Bends
We study the solutions to the wave equation in a two-dimensional tube of unit
width comprised of two straight regions connected by a region of constant
curvature. We introduce a numerical method which permits high accuracy at high
curvature. We determine the bound state energies as well as the transmission
and reflection matrices, and and focus on the nature of
the resonances which occur in the vicinity of channel thresholds. We explore
the dependence of these solutions on the curvature of the tube and angle of the
bend and discuss several limiting cases where our numerical results confirm

Baryon Number in Warped GUTs : Model Building and (Dark Matter Related) Phenomenology
In the past year, a new non-supersymmetric framework for electroweak symmetry
breaking (with or without Higgs) involving SU(2)_L * SU(2)_R * U(1)_{B-L} in
higher dimensional warped geometry has been suggested. In this work, we embed
this gauge structure into a GUT such as SO(10) or Pati-Salam. We showed
recently (in hep-ph/0403143) that in a warped GUT, a stable Kaluza-Klein
fermion can arise as a consequence of imposing proton stability. Here, we
specify a complete realistic model where this particle is a weakly interacting
right-handed neutrino, and present a detailed study of this new dark matter
candidate, providing relic density and detection predictions. We discuss
phenomenological aspects associated with the existence of other light (<~ TeV)
KK fermions (related to the neutrino), whose lightness is a direct consequence
of the top quark's heaviness. The AdS/CFT interpretation of this construction
is also presented. Most of our qualitative results do not depend on the nature
of the breaking of the electroweak symmetry provided that it happens near the
