Heavy Quark Production at High Energy
We report on QCD radiative corrections to heavy quark production valid at
high energy. The formulae presented will allow a matched calculation of the
total cross section which is correct at O(\as^3) and includes resummation of
all terms of order \as^3 [\as \ln (s/m^2)]^n. We also include asymptotic
estimates of the effect of the high energy resummation. A complete description

Incompatible sets of gradients and metastability
We give a mathematical analysis of a concept of metastability induced by
incompatibility. The physical setting is a single parent phase, just about to
undergo transformation to a product phase of lower energy density. Under
certain conditions of incompatibility of the energy wells of this energy
density, we show that the parent phase is metastable in a strong sense, namely
it is a local minimizer of the free energy in an neighbourhood of its
deformation. The reason behind this result is that, due to the incompatibility
of the energy wells, a small nucleus of the product phase is necessarily
accompanied by a stressed transition layer whose energetic cost exceeds the
energy lowering capacity of the nucleus. We define and characterize
incompatible sets of matrices, in terms of which the transition layer estimate
at the heart of the proof of metastability is expressed. Finally we discuss
connections with experiment and place this concept of metastability in the
wider context of recent theoretical and experimental research on metastability

Aerothermal modeling program, phase 1
Aerothermal submodels used in analytical combustor models are analyzed. The models described include turbulence and scalar transport, gaseous full combustion, spray evaporation/combustion, soot formation and oxidation, and radiation. The computational scheme is discussed in relation to boundary conditions and convergence criteria. Also presented is the data base for benchmark quality test cases and an analysis of simple flows
Charmed Meson Production in Proton - (ANTI)PROTON Collisions
We discuss and compare different approaches to include gluon transverse
momenta for heavy quark-antiquark pair and meson production. The results are
illustrated with the help of different unintegrated gluon distributions (UGDF)
from the literature. We compare results obtained with on-shell and off-shell
matrix elements and kinematics. The results are compared with recent

Bivariate galaxy luminosity functions in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey
Bivariate luminosity functions (LFs) are computed for galaxies in the New York Value-Added Galaxy Catalogue, based on the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 4. The galaxy properties investigated are the morphological type, inverse concentration index, Sérsic index, absolute effective surface brightness (SB), reference frame colours, absolute radius, eClass spectral type, stellar mass and galaxy environment. The morphological sample is flux limited to galaxies with r < 15.9 and consists of 37 047 classifications to an rms accuracy of ± half a class in the sequence E, S0, Sa, Sb, Sc, Sd, Im. These were assigned by an artificial neural network, based on a training set of 645 eyeball classifications. The other samples use r < 17.77 with a median redshift of z∼ 0.08, and a limiting redshift of z < 0.15 to minimize the effects of evolution. Other cuts, for example in axis ratio, are made to minimize biases. A wealth of detail is seen, with clear variations between the LFs according to absolute magnitude and the second parameter. They are consistent with an early-type, bright, concentrated, red population and a late-type, faint, less concentrated, blue, star-forming population. This bimodality suggests two major underlying physical processes, which in agreement with previous authors we hypothesize to be merger and accretion, associated with the properties of bulges and discs, respectively. The bivariate luminosity–SB distribution is fit with the Chołoniewski function (a Schechter function in absolute magnitude and Gaussian in SB). The fit is found to be poor, as might be expected if there are two underlying processes
Climate change and public health situations in the coastal areas of Bangladesh
This study aims to investigate the population health of climate change affected people in the coastal areas of Bangladesh. The relationship between climate change and health lacks clarity in the existing literature. This study uses data collected from the area affected by cyclone Sidr in 2009. Results show that climate change triggered natural disasters such as Sidr can is affect the physical and mental health of this population. The prevalence of diarrhoea, skin diseases, dengue fever, hepatitis (jaundice) and other infectious diseases has increased after the natural disaster. The risk of injury and death also increased during the time of natural disaster. Children and older adults are the most vulnerable groups facing serious health problems including mental health. The majority of the health professionals, service providers and local community of coastal areas are more aware of the health impacts of climate change, yet their knowledge is limited regarding health protection measures
Characterization of radiometric calibration of LANDSAT-4 TM reflective bands
Prelaunch and postlaunch internal calibrator, image, and background data is to characterize the radiometric performance of the LANDSAT-4 TM and to recommend improved procedures for radiometric calibration. All but two channels (band 2, channel 4; band 5, channel 3) behave normally. Gain changes relative to a postlaunch reference for channels within a band vary within 0.5 percent as a group. Instrument gain for channels in the cold focal plane oscillates. Noise in background and image data ranges from 0.5 to 1.7 counts. Average differences in forward and reverse image data indicate a need for separate calibration processing of forward and reverse scans. Precision is improved by increasing the pulse integration width from 31 to 41 minor frames, depending on the band
