    Security of the AES with a Secret S-box

    How does the security of the AES change when the S-box is replaced by a secret S-box, about which the adversary has no knowledge? Would it be safe to reduce the number of encryption rounds? In this paper, we demonstrate attacks based on integral cryptanalysis which allows to recover both the secret key and the secret S-box for respectively four, five, and six rounds of the AES. Despite the significantly larger amount of secret information which an adversary needs to recover, the attacks are very efficient with time/data complexities of 217/2162^{17}/2^{16}, 238/2402^{38}/2^{40} and 290/2642^{90}/2^{64}, respectively. Another interesting aspect of our attack is that it works both as chosen plaintext and as chosen ciphertext attack. Surprisingly, the chosen ciphertext variant has a significantly lower time complexity in the attacks on four and five round, compared to the respective chosen plaintext attacks

    Organische Bodensubstanz in sulfatsauren Böden

    Sulfatsaure Böden sind Böden und Sedimente, die Eisensulfide enthalten und verbreitet in Küstenregionen und Binnenländern vorkommen. Unter wassergesättigten Bedingungen sind sie produktive Böden der Feuchtgebiete. Eine Austrocknung dieser Böden (durch Entwässerung oder Dürreperioden) führt zur Oxidation der Eisensulfide und damit zu einer starken Versauerung aufgrund der Freisetzung von Schwefelsäure. Nach Wiedervernässung und Wiedereinsetzen reduzierender Bedingungen führt die Aktivität sulfatreduzierender Bakterien zur Bildung von Pyrit und damit zur pH-Erhöhung. Sulfatreduzierende Bakterien sind heterotroph und benötigen ausreichend verfügbares organisches Material. In vielen Regionen kommt es jedoch nach Wiedervernässung solcher Standorte nicht zum erwarteten pH-Anstieg. Dies weist auf eine geringe Aktivität sulfatreduzierender Bakterien hin, obwohl die Gesamtmenge an organischer Bodensubstanz (OBS) in diesen Böden oft hoch ist. Wir vermuten daher, dass eine geringe Verfügbarkeit von OBS die Aktivität der Sulfatreduzierer in wiedervernässten sulfatsauren Böden limitiert. In unserer Studie wurden Menge und Zusammensetzung der OBS in Bodenprofilen zweier wiedervernässter sulfatsaurer Böden in Südaustralien untersucht. Hierbei wurde das Augenmerk besonders auf die verfügbare, nicht-mineralassoziierte OBS gelegt. Bei beiden Standorten handelte es sich um Flußsedimente, die während einer extremen Dürreperiode zwischen 2008 und 2010 tiefgründig austrockneten und stark versauerten (pH <4). Seit dem Ende der Dürreperiode sind beide Standorte wieder vollständig vernässt. In einem Standort erholte sich der pH-Wert vollständig und zeigte 2015 neutrale pH-Werte, während der andere Standort im Unterboden noch immer deutlich versauert war. In den Bodenproben wurde die Menge der OBS bestimmt und mittels Dichtefraktionierung der Anteil der nicht-mineralassoziierten OBS analysiert. Die chemische Zusammensetzung der OBS wurde mittels Festkörper 13C NMR Spektroskopie und Neutralzuckeranalytik untersucht. Es zeigte sich, dass die sulfatsauren Böden zwar hohe OBS-Mengen, jedoch niedrige Anteile an leicht abbaubaren Kohlenhydraten und Proteinen und hohe Anteile an schwer abbaubaren Lipiden und Lignin enthalten. Die geringsten Gehalte an Kohlenhydraten und Proteinen fanden sich im immer noch stark versauerten Boden. Schwer abbaubare OBS ist kaum als Substrat für Sulfatreduzierer geeignet und erschwert somit die pH-Erhöhung in wiedervernässten sulfatsauren Böden

    Rapid remediation of sandy sulfuric subsoils using straw-derived dissolved organic matter

    When acid sulfate soils dry, oxidation of pyrite can cause acidification and formation of iron (Fe) oxyhydroxy sulfate phases such as jarosite. Remediation via re-establishment of reducing conditions requires submergence and addition of biodegradable organic carbon (OC) to stimulate activity of reducing bacteria. Addition of fresh plant litter has been shown to activate reducing bacteria, likely due to the release of readily available soluble organic matter. However, the effectiveness of soluble organic matter from plant residues has not been tested yet. Here, we tested the potential of wheat straw-derived dissolved OC (DOC) for remediation of a sandy sulfuric (pH < 4) soil. In a second set of experiments, we used combinations of wheat straw-derived DOC with lactate, which is a preferred substrate of sulfate reducing bacteria. All incubation experiments were conducted in the dark at 20 ◦C. The results showed that addition of DOC from wheat straw induces reduction reactions and rapidly increases the pH by 2–3 units after 3 weeks of incubation under submerged conditions. Mossbauer ¨ spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction revealed that jarosite was lost after 200 days of anoxic incubation. Short range-ordered FeIII oxyhydroxides were formed, most likely by FeII-catalysed transformation of jarosite. A second addition of DOC, as well as the addition of lactate, resulted in the almost complete loss of jarosite with increased proportions of FeIII oxyhydroxides in the remaining solids, but not in the formation of FeII sulfides. The formation of FeIII oxyhydroxides reduces the risk of both Fe leaching and renewed acidification in the event of future oxidation.     Mind the Gap - A Closer Look at the Security of Block Ciphers against Differential Cryptanalysis

    Resistance against differential cryptanalysis is an important design criteria for any modern block cipher and most designs rely on finding some upper bound on probability of single differential characteristics. However, already at EUROCRYPT'91, Lai et al. comprehended that differential cryptanalysis rather uses differentials instead of single characteristics. In this paper, we consider exactly the gap between these two approaches and investigate this gap in the context of recent lightweight cryptographic primitives. This shows that for many recent designs like Midori, Skinny or Sparx one has to be careful as bounds from counting the number of active S-boxes only give an inaccurate evaluation of the best differential distinguishers. For several designs we found new differential distinguishers and show how this gap evolves. We found an 8-round differential distinguisher for Skinny-64 with a probability of 2−56.932−56.93, while the best single characteristic only suggests a probability of 2−722−72. Our approach is integrated into publicly available tools and can easily be used when developing new cryptographic primitives. Moreover, as differential cryptanalysis is critically dependent on the distribution over the keys for the probability of differentials, we provide experiments for some of these new differentials found, in order to confirm that our estimates for the probability are correct. While for Skinny-64 the distribution over the keys follows a Poisson distribution, as one would expect, we noticed that Speck-64 follows a bimodal distribution, and the distribution of Midori-64 suggests a large class of weak keys

    Glioblastoma multiforme with oligodendroglial component (GBMO): favorable outcome after post-operative radiotherapy and chemotherapy with nimustine (ACNU) and teniposide (VM26)

    BACKGROUND: The presence of an oligodendroglial component within a glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is considered a prognostically favorable factor, but the clinical outcome of patients with glioblastoma multiforme with oligodendroglial component (GBMO) after combined post-operative radiotherapy and chemotherapy has rarely been reported. METHODS: We analyzed overall and progression-free survival in a group of ten consecutive patients initially diagnosed with GBMO between 1996 and 2004 (4.2% of all GBM patients). Median (range) age was 54 (34–73) years, 90% were resected and median radiotherapy dose was 54 (45–60.6) Gy. 80% of patients received post-operative chemotherapy with nimustine (ACNU) and VM26 (teniposide) for a median of 3.5 (1–6) cycles, the remainder were treated with post-operative radiotherapy alone. All specimens were reviewed by an experienced neuropathologist. RESULTS: Neuropathological re-evaluation revealed GBM with an oligodendroglial component of 30% or less in five cases, predominant oligoastrocytic tumors with focal areas of GBM in four patients and WHO grade III oligoastrocytoma with questionable transition to GBM in one patient. Four of ten patients were alive at at 40, 41, 41 and 82 months. The median overall survival (Kaplan-Meier) was 26 months, the 2-year survival rate was 60% (progression-free survival: 9.8 months and 40%, respectively). CONCLUSION: In conclusion, patients with GBMO treated with post-operative radiotherapy and chemotherapy with ACNU/VM26 had a better prognosis than reported for GBM in modern chemoradiation series

    Development of Diamond Tracking Detectors for High Luminosity Experiments at LHC

    During 2006 detectors based on new polycrystalline CVD (pCVD) material were produced as candidates for use in LHC experiments. The first full size diamond pixel module with ATLAS specifications using a 2×62 \times 6 cm2^2 pCVD sample was characterized in the 2006 CERN test beam. Radiation damage studies performed outside of CERN corroborate the radiation hardness of this material. Radiation hardness studies at CERN using the highest quality diamond were deferred until 2007 due to the PS magnet problem. ATLAS, CMS, ALICE and LHCb are planning to use diamond for their beam conditions monitoring systems. Construction of the BCM system for ATLAS was completed in 2006 and the BCM modules were characterized in 2006 CERN test beams. Similar devices are under construction for the CMS, ALICE and LHCb experiments. Single-crystal CVD (scCVD) samples were produced and made available to RD42 institutes. The first scCVD diamond pixel device was constructed and tested in the 2006 CERN test beams. In this report we present the progress and work done by the RD42 collaboration on the development of CVD diamond material for radiation detectors

    Human Movement Is Both Diffusive and Directed

    Understanding the influence of the built environment on human movement requires quantifying spatial structure in a general sense. Because of the difficulty of this task, studies of movement dynamics often ignore spatial heterogeneity and treat movement through journey lengths or distances alone. This study analyses public bicycle data from central London to reveal that, although journey distances, directions, and frequencies of occurrence are spatially variable, their relative spatial patterns remain largely constant, suggesting the influence of a fixed spatial template. A method is presented to describe this underlying space in terms of the relative orientation of movements toward, away from, and around locations of geographical or cultural significance. This produces two fields: one of convergence and one of divergence, which are able to accurately reconstruct the observed spatial variations in movement. These two fields also reveal categorical distinctions between shorter journeys merely serving diffusion away from significant locations, and longer journeys intentionally serving transport between spatially distinct centres of collective importance. Collective patterns of human movement are thus revealed to arise from a combination of both diffusive and directed movement, with aggregate statistics such as mean travel distances primarily determined by relative numbers of these two kinds of journeys

    The new Medical Licensing Regulations 2025 (Ärztliche Approbationsordnung, ÄApprO) will soon be passed by the Federal Council (Bundesrat) and will be implemented step by step by the individual faculties in the coming months. The further development of medical studies essentially involves an orientation from fact-based to competence-based learning and focuses on practical, longitudinal and interdisciplinary training. Radiation oncology and radiation therapy are important components of therapeutic oncology and are of great importance for public health, both clinically and epidemiologically, and therefore should be given appropriate attention in medical education. This report is based on a recent survey on the current state of radiation therapy teaching at university hospitals in Germany as well as the contents of the National Competence Based Learning Objectives Catalogue for Medicine 2.0 (Nationaler Kompetenzbasierter Lernzielkatalog Medizin 2.0, NKLM) and the closely related Subject Catalogue (Gegenstandskatalog, GK) of the Institute for Medical and Pharmaceutical Examination Questions (Institut für Medizinische und Pharmazeutische Prüfungsfragen, IMPP). The current recommendations of the German Society for Radiation Oncology (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Radioonkologie, DEGRO) regarding topics, scope and rationale for the establishment of radiation oncology teaching at the respective faculties are also included

    RNOP-09: Pegylated liposomal doxorubicine and prolonged temozolomide in addition to radiotherapy in newly diagnosed glioblastoma - a phase II study

    BACKGROUND: Although Temozolomide is effective against glioblastoma, the prognosis remains dismal and new regimens with synergistic activity are sought for. METHODS: In this phase-I/II trial, pegylated liposomal doxorubicin (Caelyx, PEG-Dox) and prolonged administration of Temozolomide in addition to radiotherapy was investigated in 63 patients with newly diagnosed glioblastoma. In phase-I, PEG-Dox was administered in a 3-by-3 dose-escalation regimen. In phase-II, 20 mg/m2 PEG-Dox was given once prior to radiotherapy and on days 1 and 15 of each 28-day cycle starting 4 weeks after radiotherapy. Temozolomide was given in a dose of 75 mg/m2 daily during radiotherapy (60 Gy) and 150-200 mg/m2 on days 1-5 of each 28-day cycle for 12 cycles or until disease progression. RESULTS: The toxicity of the combination of PEG-Dox, prolonged administration of Temozolomide, and radiotherapy was tolerable. The progression free survival after 12 months (PFS-12) was 30.2%, the median overall survival was 17.6 months in all patients including the ones from Phase-I. None of the endpoints differed significantly from the EORTC26981/NCIC-CE.3 data in a post-hoc statistical comparison. CONCLUSION: Together, the investigated combination is tolerable and feasible. Neither the addition of PEG-Dox nor the prolonged administration of Temozolomide resulted in a meaningful improvement of the patient's outcome as compared to the EORTC26981/NCIC-CE.3 data
