This paper is a review of "Enhancing Urban Management in East Asia", by Mila Friere and Belinda Yuen (Eds),publish4d by Ashgate.in Aldershot, UK, in 2004. The theme of the book is establish3ed in a well focussed introduction, where Friere points out that East Asia’s urban population is likely to double to more than 1.2 billion people in the next 25 years, and that these new citizens will need decent living and working environments if their lives are be humanly fulfilling rather than degrading and desperate. The book, consisting of 13 papers originally prepared for the World Bank’s Urban & Regional Management Course held at the National University of Singapore in May 2000 and edited by Mila Friere of the World Bank’s Latin American Region and Belinda Yuen, a professor in the Department of Real Estate in the National University of Singapore, explains the World Bank’s strategy to achieve decent living conditions for the developing world’s rapidly expanding urban populations

Anti-doping inconsistencies snare American star

This article examines the inconsistencies associated with doping control and explains the inequity which results from such inconsistent application particularly where the violation is caused by a recreational substance. This is achieved through an analysis of the WADA code anti-doping rules and the interrelationship with the principle of strict liability and an examination of the recent case IRB v. Keyter. The application of these rules creates impossible behavioural burden on athletes; ultimately this may result in a further challenge to the legal status of such rules under EU competition law.</p

Landsat Application of Remote Sensing to Shoreline-form Analysis

The author has identified the following significant results. Areas of the coast were selected which have historically shown vulnerability to storm damage. On Assateague Island, there are six such areas: the western tip of Fishing Point; the southern National Park Service parking lot; Smith Hammocks; Fox Hill Level; Little Fox Hill Level; and the northern five kilometers of the island. Comparative analysis of these areas with other data and with large and small scale aerial photographs shows them to be associated with large overwash fans and shoreline cusping. Initial analysis of Landsat imagery and high altitude photography indicates that the areas of high vulnerability are also associated with the angular orientation of the shoreline

Route Choice in Congested Urban Networks – Project Report.

The main objective of the project was to study the factors affecting choice of route by drivers in a congested sector of the city of Leeds (see Figure 1.1) and to study the effects over time on any choice of route following the introduction of two complementary traffic management schemes

Shoreline configuration and shoreline dynamics: A mesoscale analysis

The author has identified the following significant results. Atlantic coast barrier island shorelines are seldom straight, but rather sinuous. These shoreline curvatures range in size from cusps to capes. Significant relationships exist between the orientation of shoreline segments within the larger of these sinuous features and shoreline dynamics, with coefficients ranging up to .9. Orientation of the shoreline segments of Assateague Island (60 km) and the Outer Banks of North Carolina (130 km) was measured from LANDSAT 2 imagery (1:80,000) and high altitude aerial photography (1:120,000). Long term trends in shoreline dynamics were established by mapping shoreline and storm-surge penetration changes
