    Bilateral vestibulopathy and age:experimental considerations for testing dynamic visual acuity on a treadmill

    Introduction: Bilateral vestibulopathy (BVP) can affect visual acuity in dynamic conditions, like walking. This can be assessed by testing Dynamic Visual Acuity (DVA) on a treadmill at different walking speeds. Apart from BVP, age itself might influence DVA and the ability to complete the test. The objective of this study was to investigate whether DVA tested while walking, and the drop-out rate (the inability to complete all walking speeds of the test) are significantly influenced by age in BVP-patients and healthy subjects. Methods: Forty-four BVP-patients (20 male, mean age 59 years) and 63 healthy subjects (27 male, mean age 46 years) performed the DVA test on a treadmill at 0 (static condition), 2, 4 and 6 km/h (dynamic conditions). The dynamic visual acuity loss was calculated as the difference between visual acuity in the static condition and visual acuity in each walking condition. The dependency of the drop-out rate and dynamic visual acuity loss on BVP and age was investigated at all walking speeds, as well as the dependency of dynamic visual acuity loss on speed. Results: Age and BVP significantly increased the drop-out rate (p ≤ 0.038). A significantly higher dynamic visual acuity loss was found at all speeds in BVP-patients compared to healthy subjects (p < 0.001). Age showed no effect on dynamic visual acuity loss in both groups. In BVP-patients, increasing walking speeds resulted in higher dynamic visual acuity loss (p ≤ 0.036). Conclusion DVA tested while walking on a treadmill, is one of the few “close to reality” functional outcome measures of vestibular function in the vertical plane. It is able to demonstrate significant loss of DVA in bilateral vestibulopathy patients. However, since bilateral vestibulopathy and age significantly increase the drop-out rate at faster walking speeds, it is recommended to use age-matched controls. Furthermore, it could be considered to use an individual “preferred” walking speed and to limit maximum walking speed in older subjects when testing DVA on a treadmill

    Gait abnormalities in people with Dravet syndrome: A cross-sectional multi-center study

    Objective: To quantify gait abnormalities in people with Dravet syndrome (DS). Methods: Individuals with a confirmed diagnosis of DS were enrolled, and stratified according to knee flexion at initial contact (IC) and range of motion (ROM) during stance (atypical crouch: knee flexion &gt;20\ub0 at IC and knee ROM &gt;15\ub0 during stance; straight: knee flexion &lt;20\ub0 at IC). A 1D ANOVA (\u3b1 = 0.05) was used to test statistical differences among the joint kinematics and spatio\u2013temporal parameters of the cohort and an age-matched control group. Clinical (neurological and orthopaedic evaluation) and anamnestic data (seizure type, drugs, genetic mutation) were collected; distribution between the two gait phenotypes was assessed with the Fisher exact test and, for mutation, with the chi-squared test (p &lt; 0.05). Linear regression between maximum knee flexion and normalised walking speed was calculated. Results: Seventy-one subjects were enrolled and evaluated with instrumented gait analysis. Fifty-two were included in final analysis (mean age 13.8 \ub1 7.3; M 26). Two gait patterns were detected: an atypical crouch gait (34.6%) with increased ankle, knee and hip flexion during stance, and reduced walking speed and stride length not associated with muscle-tendon retractions; and a pattern resembling those of healthy age-matched controls, but still showing reduced walking speed and stride length. No differences in clinical or anamnestic data emerged between the two groups. Significance: Objectively quantified gait in DS shows two gait patterns with no clear-cut relation to clinical data. Kinematics abnormalities may be related to stabilization issues. These findings may guide rehabilitative and preventive measures

    Separation of respiration and perfusion in Electrical Impedance Tomography by harmonic analysis

    In this contribution we illustrate a post-acquisition method for the separation of perfusion and respiration components in Electrical Impedance Tomography (EIT). In this method a harmonic analysis of the EIT transient is performed taking advantage of the fact that the perfusion and the respiration can easily be distinguished by their relative frequency. In fact, EIT transients can be reconstructed as a summation of amplitude modulated signals some of which belonging to the respiration and some others to the perfusion. Here we show preliminary results on EIT reconstructed snapshots where respiration and perfusion information are completely decoupled
