    The Lewis/OAST program for the development of Component Technology for Space Power Systems is described. The program is divided into five generic areas: semiconductor devices (transistors, thyristors, and diodes); conductors (materials and transmission lines); dielectrics; magnetic devices; and thermal control devices. Examples of progress in each of the five areas is discussed. Bipolar power transistors up to 1000 V at 100 A with a gain of 10 and a 0.5 mu sec rise and fall time are presented. A new class of semiconductor devices with a possibility of switching 1000 000 V is described. Several 100 kW rotary power transformer designs and a 25 kW, 20 kHz transformer weighting 3.2 kg have been developed. Progress on the creation of diamond-like films for thermal devices and intercalated carbon fibers with the strength of steel and the conductivity of copper at one third the mass of copper is presented

In addition, electrothermal and electromagnetic propulsion technologies are being developed to attempt to fill the gap between the conventional ion thruster and chemical rocket systems. Most of these new concepts are exagenous and are represented by rail accelerators, ablative Teflon thrusters, MPD arcs, Free Radicals, etc. Endogenous systems such as metallic hydrogen offer great promise and are also being pursued

    SERT 2 thruster space restart, 1974

    The results of testing the flight thrusters on the SERT spacecraft during the 1974 test period are presented. The most notable result was the clearing of the high voltage short from thruster 2 and the successful stable operation of its ion beam. Test periods were limited to 70 minutes or less by earth eclipse of the spacecraft solar array and by ground station coverage limitations. Thruster 2 was restarted 26 times with an ion beam produced 21 times. The high voltage short remains in thruster 1, but the cathodes were restarted 12 times to demonstrate continued restart capability. The propellant feed systems, power processors, and spacecraft ancillary equipment were demonstrated to be functional after 4 1/2 years in space. In addition to the thruster tests, a neutralizer cathode was operated separately to demonstrate that the potential level of a spacecraft could be controlled by the neutralizer alone

    A soil sampling program for the Netherlands

    Soil data users in The Netherlands were inventoried for current and future data needs. Prioritized data needs were used to design the Netherlands Soil Sampling Program (NSSP) as a framework containing 3 groups of related projects: map upgrading, map updating and upgrading of pedotransfer functions. In each one group, the sampling design, performance criteria and optimal sample size were defined. This paper focuses on the upgrading of the existing soil map of The Netherlands at scale 1:50,000, and extensively treats the user inventory and the sampling strategy. The sampling design, performance criteria of the sampling and associated optimal sample size were obtained by statistical analysis of soil data available before the sampling. The Phosphate Sorption Capacity (PSC) was chosen as target variable to optimize sampling, because it dominated total cost per sample. A prior analysis of a performance criterion related to the sampling error of PSC resulted in a cost saving of 13% relative to total cost determined earlier by expert judgment. A posterior analysis showed that the set quality criterion was reached or better in 6 out of 7 cases. The NSSP resulted in a data base with soil data from 2524 sample points selected by stratified random sampling, and a collection of 5764 aliquots taken at these points. The NSSP has been showing its usage potential for various kinds of environmental studies and could be a sound future basis for a national scale monitoring program

    Electric arc discharge damage to ion thruster grids

    Arcs representative of those occurring between the grids of a mercury ion thruster were simulated. Parameters affecting an arc and the resulting damage were studied. The parameters investigated were arc energy, arc duration, and grid geometry. Arc attenuation techniques were also investigated. Potentially serious damage occurred at all energy levels representative of actual thruster operating conditions. Of the grids tested, the lowest open-area configuration sustained the least damage for given conditions. At a fixed energy level a long duration discharge caused greater damage than a short discharge. Attenuation of arc current using various impedances proved to be effective in reducing arc damage. Faults were also deliberately caused using chips of sputtered materials formed during the operation of an actual thruster. These faults were cleared with no serious grid damage resulting using the principles and methods developed in this study
