Energy in Yang-Mills on a Riemann Surface
Sengupta's lower bound for the Yang-Mills action on smooth connections on a
bundle over a Riemann surface generalizes to the space of connections whose
action is finite. In this larger space the inequality can always be saturated.
The Yang-Mills critical sets correspond to critical sets of the energy action
on a space of paths. This may shed light on Atiyah and Bott's conjecture
concerning Morse theory for the space of connections modulo gauge

On asymptotically optimal tests under loss of identifiability in semiparametric models
We consider tests of hypotheses when the parameters are not identifiable
under the null in semiparametric models, where regularity conditions for
profile likelihood theory fail. Exponential average tests based on integrated
profile likelihood are constructed and shown to be asymptotically optimal under
a weighted average power criterion with respect to a prior on the
nonidentifiable aspect of the model. These results extend existing results for
parametric models, which involve more restrictive assumptions on the form of
the alternative than do our results. Moreover, the proposed tests accommodate
models with infinite dimensional nuisance parameters which either may not be
identifiable or may not be estimable at the usual parametric rate. Examples
include tests of the presence of a change-point in the Cox model with current
status data and tests of regression parameters in odds-rate models with right
censored data. Optimal tests have not previously been studied for these
scenarios. We study the asymptotic distribution of the proposed tests under the
null, fixed contiguous alternatives and random contiguous alternatives. We also
propose a weighted bootstrap procedure for computing the critical values of the
test statistics. The optimal tests perform well in simulation studies, where

Quantum Locality?
Robert Griffiths has recently addressed, within the framework of a
'consistent quantum theory' that he has developed, the issue of whether, as is
often claimed, quantum mechanics entails a need for faster-than-light transfers
of information over long distances. He argues that the putative proofs of this
property that involve hidden variables include in their premises some
essentially classical-physics-type assumptions that are fundamentally
incompatible with the precepts of quantum physics. One cannot logically prove
properties of a system by establishing, instead, properties of a system
modified by adding properties alien to the original system. Hence Griffiths'
rejection of hidden-variable-based proofs is logically warranted. Griffiths
mentions the existence of a certain alternative proof that does not involve
hidden variables, and that uses only macroscopically described observable
properties. He notes that he had examined in his book proofs of this general
kind, and concluded that they provide no evidence for nonlocal influences. But
he did not examine the particular proof that he cites. An examination of that
particular proof by the method specified by his 'consistent quantum theory'
shows that the cited proof is valid within that restrictive version of quantum
theory. An added section responds to Griffiths' reply, which cites general
possibilities of ambiguities that make what is to be proved ill-defined, and
hence render the pertinent 'consistent framework' ill defined. But the vagaries
that he cites do not upset the proof in question, which, both by its physical
formulation and by explicit identification, specify the framework to be used.
Griffiths confirms the validity of the proof insofar as that framework is used.
The section also shows, in response to Griffiths' challenge, why a putative

This condition makes the students result be low, teacher explains or speaks much in the classroom so they are less entusiastic in learning the materials so they cannot accept well what the teacher give to them. The problem of this research is that is there any effect on learning sending greeting and exercises toward the students study result on the theme what a beautiful country i have, grade IV students of SDN 6 Suwawal. The purpose to be achieved is that to find out is there any effect on learning sending and greeting and exercises toward the students study result on the theme what a beautiful country i have grade IV students of SDN 6 Suwawal?é?á?é?á?é?á . This is a kuantitative research. The population of this research are all students of grade IV in SDN 6 Suwawal Jepara. The sampling taken are 40 students using probability sampling technique especially cluster sampling. Data of this research is gained from the observation on students activity to get score on phsicomotoric aspect including the test to know the students study result on cognitive aspect. The research design used is pretest posttest control group design. Based on the result analysis on the data research by using t ?óÔé¼ÔÇ£ test separated, is gained 2,447 tcount of cognitive score, 2,243 tcount of tcount phsicomotoric with ttabel for both is 2, 021 on 5% significancy level. So, tcount > ttabel and Ho is denied. Average increase on cognitive study result on students grade IV of SDN 6 Suwawal Jepara before given the treatment is 50% and after the treatment is 100%. The average psicomotoric study result is 80%. So, it can be concluded that there is effects on learning sending and greeting and exercises toward the students study result on the theme what a beautiful country i have grade IV students of SDN 6 Suwawal. The recomendation that the researcher can give is that the use of sending greeting and exercises method should be applied on small class only or class with not more than 25 students in it because it is needed relatively a lot of time in the application of this kind of research method
Plasticity of GABA(B) receptor-mediated heterosynaptic interactions at mossy fibers after status epilepticus
Several neurotransmitters, including GABA acting at presynaptic GABAB receptors, modulate glutamate release at synapses between hippocampal mossy fibers and CA3 pyramidal neurons. This phenomenon gates excitation of the hippocampus and may therefore prevent limbic seizure propagation. Here we report that status epilepticus, triggered by either perforant path stimulation or pilocarpine administration, was followed 24 hr later by a loss of GABAB receptor-mediated heterosynaptic depression among populations of mossy fibers. This was accompanied by a decrease in the sensitivity of mossy fiber transmission to the exogenous GABAB receptor agonist baclofen. Autoradiography revealed a reduction in GABAB receptor binding in the stratum lucidum after status epilepticus. Failure of GABAB receptor-mediated modulation of mossy fiber transmission at mossy fibers may contribute to the development of spontaneous seizures after status epilepticus

Robust Inference for Univariate Proportional Hazards Frailty Regression Models
We consider a class of semiparametric regression models which are
one-parameter extensions of the Cox [J. Roy. Statist. Soc. Ser. B 34 (1972)
187-220] model for right-censored univariate failure times. These models assume
that the hazard given the covariates and a random frailty unique to each
individual has the proportional hazards form multiplied by the frailty.
The frailty is assumed to have mean 1 within a known one-parameter family of
distributions. Inference is based on a nonparametric likelihood. The behavior
of the likelihood maximizer is studied under general conditions where the
fitted model may be misspecified. The joint estimator of the regression and
frailty parameters as well as the baseline hazard is shown to be uniformly
consistent for the pseudo-value maximizing the asymptotic limit of the
likelihood. Appropriately standardized, the estimator converges weakly to a
Gaussian process. When the model is correctly specified, the procedure is
semiparametric efficient, achieving the semiparametric information bound for
all parameter components. It is also proved that the bootstrap gives valid
inferences for all parameters, even under misspecification.
We demonstrate analytically the importance of the robust inference in several
examples. In a randomized clinical trial, a valid test of the treatment effect
is possible when other prognostic factors and the frailty distribution are both
misspecified. Under certain conditions on the covariates, the ratios of the
regression parameters are still identifiable. The practical utility of the
procedure is illustrated on a non-Hodgkin's lymphoma dataset.Comment: Published by the Institute of Mathematical Statistics
