Gluon energy loss in the gauge-string duality
We estimate the stopping length of an energetic gluon in a thermal plasma of
strongly coupled N=4 super-Yang-Mills theory by representing the gluon as a

Gap solitons in spatiotemporal photonic crystals
We generalize the concept of nonlinear periodic structures to systems that
show arbitrary spacetime variations of the refractive index. Nonlinear pulse
propagation through these spatiotemporal photonic crystals can be described,
for shallow nonstationary gratings, by coupled mode equations which are a
generalization of the traditional equations used for stationary photonic
crystals. Novel gap soliton solutions are found by solving a modified massive
Thirring model. They represent the missing link between the gap solitons in
static photonic crystals and resonance solitons found in dynamic gratings.Comment: 3 figures, submitte
Experimental reversion of the optimal quantum cloning and flipping processes
The quantum cloner machine maps an unknown arbitrary input qubit into two
optimal clones and one optimal flipped qubit. By combining linear and
non-linear optical methods we experimentally implement a scheme that, after the
cloning transformation, restores the original input qubit in one of the output
channels, by using local measurements, classical communication and feedforward.
This significant teleportation-like method demonstrates how the information is
preserved during the cloning process. The realization of the reversion process
is expected to find useful applications in the field of modern multi-partite

Large current noise in nanoelectromechanical systems close to continuous mechanical instabilities
We investigate the current noise of nanoelectromechanical systems close to a
continuous mechanical instability. In the vicinity of the latter, the
vibrational frequency of the nanomechanical system vanishes, rendering the
system very sensitive to charge fluctuations and, hence, resulting in very
large (super-Poissonian) current noise. Specifically, we consider a suspended
single-electron transistor close to the Euler buckling instability. We show
that such a system exhibits an exponential enhancement of the current noise
when approaching the Euler instability which we explain in terms of telegraph

Metal abundances in extremely distant Galactic old open clusters. II. Berkeley 22 and Berkeley 66
We report on high resolution spectroscopy of four giant stars in the Galactic
old open clusters Berkeley~22 and Berkeley~66 obtained with HIRES at the Keck
telescope. We find that and for
Berkeley~22 and Berkeley~66, respectively. Based on these data, we first revise
the fundamental parameters of the clusters, and then discuss them in the
context of the Galactic disk radial abundance gradient. We found that both
clusters nicely obey the most updated estimate of the slope of the gradient

Acoustic charge transport in n-i-n three terminal device
We present an unconventional approach to realize acoustic charge transport
devices that takes advantage from an original input region geometry in place of
standard Ohmic input contacts. Our scheme is based on a n-i-n lateral junction
as electron injector, an etched intrinsic channel, a standard Ohmic output
contact and a pair of in-plane gates. We show that surface acoustic waves are
able to pick up electrons from a current flowing through the n-i-n junction and
steer them toward the output contact. Acoustic charge transport was studied as
a function of the injector current and bias, the SAW power and at various
temperatures. The possibility to modulate the acoustoelectric current by means
of lateral in-plane gates is also discussed. The main advantage of our approach
relies on the possibility to drive the n-i-n injector by means of both voltage
or current sources, thus allowing to sample and process voltage and current

The effect of a stellar magnetic variation on the jet velocity
Stellar jets are normally constituted by chains of knots with some
periodicity in their spatial distribution, corresponding to a variability of
order of several years in the ejection from the protostar/disk system. A widely
accepted theory for the presence of knots is related to the generation of
internal working surfaces due to variations in the jet ejection velocity. In
this paper we study the effect of variations in the inner disk-wind radius on
the jet ejection velocity. We show that a small variation in the inner
disk-wind radius produce a variation in the jet velocity large enough to
generate the observed knots. We also show that the variation in the inner

A semi-classical over-barrier model for charge exchange between highly charged ions and one-optical electron atoms
Absolute total cross sections for electron capture between slow, highly
charged ions and alkali targets have been recently measured. It is found that
these cross sections follow a scaling law with the projectile charge which is
different from the one previously proposed basing on a classical over-barrier
model (OBM) and verified using rare gases and molecules as targets. In this
paper we develop a "semi-classical" (i.e. including some quantal features) OBM
attempting to recover experimental results. The method is then applied to
ion-hydrogen collisions and compared with the result of a sophisticated
quantum-mechanical calculation. In the former case the accordance is very good,
while in the latter one no so satisfactory results are found. A qualitative
