The bright optical companion to the eclipsing millisecond pulsar in NGC 6397
We report the possible optical identification of the companion to the
eclipsing millisecond pulsar PSR J1740-5340 in the globular cluster NGC 6397. A
bright variable star with an anomalous red colour and optical variability which
nicely correlates to the orbital period of the pulsar has been found close to
the pulsar position. If confirmed, the optical light curve, reminiscent of
tidal distorsions similar to those observed in detached and contact binaries,
support the idea that this is the first case of a Roche lobe filling companion
to a millisecond pulsar.Comment: 9 pages, 4 embedded figures, submitted to ApJ Letter
Understanding Rates of Marijuana Use and Consequences Among Adolescents in a Changing Legal Landscape.
Purpose of Review:There is not one answer to address whether marijuana use has increased, decreased, or stayed the same given changes in state legalization of medical and non-medical marijuana in the USA. Recent Findings:Evidence suggests some health benefits for medical marijuana; however, initiation of marijuana use is a risk factor for developing problem cannabis use. Though use rates have remained stable over recent years, about one in three 10th graders report marijuana use, most adolescents do not view the drug as harmful, and over 650,000 youth aged 12 to 17 struggle with cannabis use disorder. Summary:Although the health benefits of medical marijuana are becoming better understood, more research is needed. Intervention and prevention programs must better address effects of marijuana, acknowledging that while there may be some benefits medically, marijuana use can affect functioning during adolescence when the brain is still developing
Timing the millisecond pulsars in 47 Tucanae
In the last 10 years 20 millisecond pulsars have been discovered in the
globular cluster 47 Tucanae. Hitherto, only 3 of these had published timing
solutions. Here we improve upon these 3 and present 12 new solutions. These
measurements can be used to determine a variety of physical properties of the
pulsars and of the cluster. The 15 pulsars have positions determined with
typical uncertianties of only a few milliarcsec and they are all located within
1.2 arcmin of the cluster centre. We have also measured the proper motions of 5
of the pulsars, which are consistent with the proper motion of 47 Tuc based on
Hipparcos data. The period derivatives measured for many of the pulsars are
dominated by the dynamical effects of the cluster gravitational field, and are
used to constrain the surface mass density of the cluster. All pulsars have
characteristic ages T > 170 Myr and magnetic fields B < 2.4e9 Gauss, and the
average T > 1 Gyr. We have measured the rate of advance of periastron for the
binary pulsar J0024-7204H, implying a total system mass 1.4+-0.8 solar masses.Comment: 17 pages, 11 included figures, accepted for publication in MNRA
Spin-based quantum gating with semiconductor quantum dots by bichromatic radiation method
A potential scheme is proposed for realizing a two-qubit quantum gate in
semiconductor quantum dots. Information is encoded in the spin degrees of
freedom of one excess conduction electron of each quantum dot. We propose to
use two lasers, radiation two neighboring QDs, and tuned to blue detuning with
respect to the resonant frequencies of individual excitons. The two-qubit phase
gate can be achieved by means of both Pauli-blocking effect and dipole-dipole
coupling between intermediate excitonic states.Comment: Europhysics Letters 66 (2004) 1
Results and complications of facial reanimation following cerebellopontine angle surgery
The present study was undertaken to evaluate the results of a group of patients following treatment for cerebellopontine angle lesions who developed postoperative facial palsy and underwent facial nerve repair in order to reanimate the muscles of facial expression. A retrospective study was performed on 23 patients treated between 1988 and 1997 at the 2nd and 4th ENT chairs of University "La Sapienza" of Pome for facial palsy following cerebellopontine angle surgery. Tumors included acoustic neuromas (n = 3). Seventeen patients underwent hypoglossal-facial anastomoses [10 with end-to-end anastomoses, 4 with May's interposition "jump-nerve" grafts and 3 with partial (30%) use of the hypoglossal nerve plus a facial cross-over]. The remaining patients were operated on using a cable graft with the sural nerve (n = 2) and the great auricular nerve (n = 4). Postoperative facial function was determined by the House-Brackmann 6-scale classification The hypoglossal-facial anastomoses resulted in long-term grade III or IV findings. Cable grafts improved facial function from grade VI to grade III. None of the patients operated on with the modified VII-XII anastomosis developed swallowing disturbances. The ten patients having traditional hypoglossal-facial anastomoses showed different degrees of tongue disability and retention of residue in the oral cavity. Surgical recovery of postoperative facial palsy can be obtained with various techniques according to the availability of the proximal facial nerve stump at the brain stem. Since a traditional hypoglossal-facial anastomosis procedure can be a source of a separate disability for the patient: techniques are preferred that leave the hypoglossal nerve mostly intact and uncompromised
Discovery of Two High-Magnetic-Field Radio Pulsars
We report the discovery of two young isolated radio pulsars with very high
inferred magnetic fields. PSR J1119-6127 has period P = 0.407 s, and the
largest period derivative known among radio pulsars, Pdot = 4.0e-12. Under
standard assumptions these parameters imply a characteristic spin-down age of
only tau = 1.6 kyr and a surface dipole magnetic field strength of B = 4.1e13
G. We have measured a stationary period-second-derivative for this pulsar,
resulting in a braking index of n = 2.91+-0.05. We have also observed a glitch
in the rotation of the pulsar, with fractional period change Delta_P/P =
-4.4e-9. Archival radio imaging data suggest the presence of a previously
uncataloged supernova remnant centered on the pulsar. The second pulsar, PSR
J1814-1744, has P = 3.975 s and Pdot = 7.4e-13. These parameters imply tau = 85
kyr, and B = 5.5e13 G, the largest of any known radio pulsar.
Both PSR J1119-6127 and PSR J1814-1744 show apparently normal radio emission
in a regime of magnetic field strength where some models predict that no
emission should occur. Also, PSR J1814-1744 has spin parameters similar to the
anomalous X-ray pulsar (AXP) 1E 2259+586, but shows no discernible X-ray
emission. If AXPs are isolated, high magnetic field neutron stars
(``magnetars''), these results suggest that their unusual attributes are
unlikely to be merely a consequence of their very high inferred magnetic
fields.Comment: 7 pages, 3 embedded EPS figures, to be published in Ap
