Characterization of a thermally imidized soluble polyimide film
A soluble aromatic poly(amic acid) film was converted to a soluble polyimide by staging at 25 deg intervals to 325 C and characterized at each interval by several analytical methods. The behavior observed was consistent with an interpretation that a reduction occurred in molecular weight of the poly(amic acid) during the initial stages of cure before the ultimate molecular weight was achieved as a polyimide. This interpretation was supported by the results of solution viscosity, gel permeation chromatography, low angle laser light scattering photometry and infrared spectroscopy analysis. The results serve to increase the fundamental understanding of how polyimides are thermally formed from poly(amic acids)
The Importance of Phase in Nulling Interferometry and a Three Telescope Closure-Phase Nulling Interferometer Concept
We discuss the theory of the Bracewell nulling interferometer and explicitly
demonstrate that the phase of the "white light" null fringe is the same as the
phase of the bright output from an ordinary stellar interferometer. As a
consequence a "closure phase" exists for a nulling interferometer with three or
more telescopes. We calculate the phase offset as a function of baseline length
for an Earth-like planet around the Sun at 10 pc, with a contrast ratio of
at 10 m. The magnitude of the phase due to the planet is radians, assuming the star is at the phase center of the array.
Although this is small, this phase may be observable in a three-telescope
nulling interferometer that measures the closure phase. We propose a simple
non-redundant three-telescope nulling interferometer that can perform this
measurement. This configuration is expected to have improved characteristics
compared to other nulling interferometer concepts, such as a relaxation of
pathlength tolerances, through the use of the "ratio of wavelengths" technique,
a closure phase, and better discrimination between exodiacal dust and planets
Body mass index and age affect Three-Factor Eating Questionnaire scores in male subjects
This cross-sectional analysis evaluated the effect of age and body mass index (BMI) on Three-Factor Eating Questionnaire scores in males. Subjects (n = 60) were recruited according to BMI status. Each completed the 51-item Three-Factor Eating Questionnaire. The group was split at the median age to produce a "younger" and "older" group for statistical analysis. A 2-way between-groups analysis of variance revealed a significant main effect of BMI on disinhibition (P = .003) and hunger (P = .041) with higher levels found in overweight males compared to healthy-weight counterparts. A significant main effect of age on hunger (P = .046) demonstrated older males were less susceptible to hunger than younger males. These insights provide a better understanding of eating behavior across the male life cycle and may assist health professionals to better guide men in weight management in the light of rising overweight/obesity. Development of a carbon fibre composite active mirror: Design and testing
Carbon fibre composite technology for lightweight mirrors is gaining
increasing interest in the space- and ground-based astronomical communities for
its low weight, ease of manufacturing, excellent thermal qualities and
robustness. We present here first results of a project to design and produce a
27 cm diameter deformable carbon fibre composite mirror. The aim was to produce
a high surface form accuracy as well as low surface roughness. As part of this
programme, a passive mirror was developed to investigate stability and coating
issues. Results from the manufacturing and polishing process are reported here.
We also present results of a mechanical and thermal finite element analysis, as
well as early experimental findings of the deformable mirror. Possible

The integration of on-line monitoring and reconfiguration functions using IEEE1149.4 into a safety critical automotive electronic control unit.
This paper presents an innovative application of IEEE 1149.4 and the integrated diagnostic reconfiguration (IDR) as tools for the implementation of an embedded test solution for an automotive electronic control unit, implemented as a fully integrated mixed signal system. The paper describes how the test architecture can be used for fault avoidance with results from a hardware prototype presented. The paper concludes that fault avoidance can be integrated into mixed signal electronic systems to handle key failure modes
Methods of editing cloud and atmospheric layer affected pixels from satellite data
Subvisible cirrus clouds (SCi) were easily distinguished in mid-infrared (MIR) TIROS-N daytime data from south Texas and northeast Mexico. The MIR (3.55-3.93 micrometer) pixel digital count means of the SCi affected areas were more than 3.5 standard deviations on the cold side of the scene means. (These standard deviations were made free of the effects of unusual instrument error by factoring out the Ch 3 MIR noise on the basis of detailed examination of noisy and noise-free pixels). SCi affected areas in the IR Ch 4 (10.5-11.5 micrometer) appeared cooler than the general scene, but were not as prominent as in Ch 3, being less than 2 standard deviations from the scene mean. Ch 3 and 4 standard deviations and coefficients of variation are not reliable indicators, by themselves, of the presence of SCi because land features can have similar statistical properties
