    Comment on ``Density Matrix Renormalization Group Study of the Haldane Phase in Random One-Dimensional Antiferromagnets"

    In a recent Letter (PRL 83, 3297 (1999)), Hida presented numerical results indicating that the Haldane phase of the Heisenberg antiferromagnetic spin-1 chain is stable against bond randomness, for box distributions of the bond strength, even when the box distribution stretches to zero bond strength. The author thus concluded that the Haldane phase is stable against bond randomness for any distribution of the bond strength, no matter how broad. In this Comment, we (i) point out that the randomness distributions studied in this Letter do not represent the broadest possible distributions, and therefore these numerical results do not lead to the conclusion that the Haldane phase is stable against any randomness; and (ii) provide a semiquantitative estimate of the critical randomness beyond which the Haldane phase yields to the Random Singlet phase, in a specific class of random distribution functions for the bond strength.Comment: A comment on PRL 83, 3297 (1999).     Ion thruster system (8-cm) cyclic endurance test

    This report describes the qualification test of an Engineering-Model 5-mN-thrust 8-cm-diameter mercury ion thruster which is representative of the Ion Auxiliary Propulsion System (IAPS) thrusters. Two of these thrusters are scheduled for future flight test. The cyclic endurance test described herein was a ground-based test performed in a vacuum facility with a liquid-nitrogen-cooled cryo-surface and a frozen mercury target. The Power Electronics Unit, Beam Shield, Gimal, and Propellant Tank that were used with the thruster in the endurance test are also similar to those of the IAPS. The IAPS thruster that will undergo the longest beam-on-time during the actual space test will be subjected to 7,055 hours of beam-on-time and 2,557 cycles during the flight test. The endurance test was successfully concluded when the mercury in the IAPS Propellant Tank was consumed. At that time, 8,471 hours of beam-on-time and 599 cycles had been accumulated. Subsequent post-test-evaluation operations were performed (without breaking vacuum) which extended the test values to 652 cycles and 9,489 hours of beam-on-time. The Power Electronic Unit (PEU) and thruster were in the same vacuum chamber throughout the test.     A new perspective on GCRT J1745-3009

    Two WSRT observations were performed and five archival VLA data were reduced in order to redetect the enigmatic radio transient GCRT J1745-3009. The source was not redetected. We were, however, able to extract important new information from the discovery dataset. Our reanalysis excludes models that predict symmetric bursts, but the transient white dwarf pulsar is favoured. Although we now have more contraints on the properties of this source, we are still unsure about its basic model.Comment: 11 pages, 5 figure

    Engineering model 8-cm thruster subsystem

    An Engineering Model (EM) 8 cm Ion Thruster Propulsion Subsystem was developed for operation at a thrust level 5 mN (1.1 mlb) at a specific impulse 1 sub sp = 2667 sec with a total system input power P sub in = 165 W. The system dry mass is 15 kg with a mercury-propellant-reservoir capacity of 8.75 kg permitting uninterrupted operation for about 12,500 hr. The subsystem can be started from a dormant condition in a time less than or equal to 15 min. The thruster has a design lifetime of 20,000 hr with 10,000 startup cycles. A gimbal unit is included to provide a thrust vector deflection capability of + or - 10 degrees in any direction from the zero position. The EM subsystem development program included thruster optimization, power-supply circuit optimization and flight packaging, subsystem integration, and subsystem acceptance testing including a cyclic test of the total propulsion package

    Dynamics and Transport in Random Antiferromagnetic Spin Chains

    We present the first results on the low-frequency dynamical and transport properties of random antiferromagnetic spin chains at low temperature (TT). We obtain the momentum and frequency dependent dynamic structure factor in the Random Singlet (RS) phases of both spin-1/2 and spin-1 chains, as well as in the Random Dimer phase of spin-1/2 chains. We also show that the RS phases are unusual `spin-metals' with divergent low-frequency conductivity at T=0, and follow the spin conductivity through `metal-insulator' transitions tuned by the strength of dimerization or Ising anisotropy in the spin-1/2 case, and by the strength of disorder in the spin-1 case.Comment: 4 pages (two-column format).     <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The origin and early evolution of the active site of the ribosome can be elucidated through an analysis of the ribosomal proteins' taxonomic block structures and their RNA interactions. Comparison between the two subunits, exploiting the detailed three-dimensional structures of the bacterial and archaeal ribosomes, is especially informative.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The analysis of the differences between these two sites can be summarized as follows: 1) There is no self-folding RNA segment that defines the decoding site of the small subunit; 2) there is one self-folding RNA segment encompassing the entire peptidyl transfer center of the large subunit; 3) the protein contacts with the decoding site are made by a set of universal alignable sequence blocks of the ribosomal proteins; 4) the majority of those peptides contacting the peptidyl transfer center are made by bacterial or archaeal-specific sequence blocks.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>These clear distinctions between the two subunit active sites support an earlier origin for the large subunit's peptidyl transferase center (PTC) with the decoding site of the small subunit being a later addition to the ribosome.     Evaluating Multiple Arthropod Taxa as Indicators of Invertebrate Diversity in Old Fields

    Biodiversity, often quantified by species richness, is commonly used to evaluate and monitor the health of ecosystems and as a tool for conservation planning. The use of one or more focal taxa as surrogates or indicators of larger taxonomic diversity can greatly expedite the process of biodiversity measurement. This is especially true when studying diverse and abundant invertebrate fauna. Before indicator taxa are employed, however, research into their suitability as indicators of greater taxonomic diversity in an area is needed. We sampled invertebrate diversity in old fields in southern Michigan using pitfall trapping and morphospecies designations after identification to order or family. Correlation analysis was used to assess species richness relationships between focal arthropod taxa and general invertebrate diversity. Relationships were assessed at two fine spatial scales: within sampling patches, and locally across four sampling patches. Cumulative richness of all assessed taxa increased proportionately with cumulative invertebrate richness as sampling intensity increased within patches. At the among-patch scale, we tentatively identified Hemiptera and Coleoptera as effective indicator taxa of greater invertebrate richness. Although Hymenoptera, Araneae and Diptera exhibited high species richness, their total richness within patches was not associated with overall invertebrate richness among patches. Increased sampling throughout the active season and across a greater number of habitat patches should be conducted before adopting Hemiptera and Coleoptera as definitive indicators of general invertebrate richness in the Great Lakes region. Multiple sampling techniques, in addition to pitfall trapping, should also be added to overcome capture biases associated with each technique

    Griffiths Effects in Random Heisenberg Antiferromagnetic S=1 Chains

    I consider the effects of enforced dimerization on random Heisenberg antiferromagnetic S=1 chains. I argue for the existence of novel Griffiths phases characterized by {\em two independent dynamical exponents} that vary continuously in these phases; one of the exponents controls the density of spin-1/2 degrees of freedom in the low-energy effective Hamiltonian, while the other controls the corresponding density of spin-1 degrees of freedom. Moreover, in one of these Griffiths phases, the system has very different low temperature behavior in two different parts of the phase which are separated from each other by a sharply defined crossover line; on one side of this crossover line, the system `looks' like a S=1 chain at low energies, while on the other side, it is best thought of as a S=1/2S=1/2 chain. A strong-disorder RG analysis makes it possible to analytically obtain detailed information about the low temperature behavior of physical observables such as the susceptibility and the specific heat, as well as identify an experimentally accessible signature of this novel crossover.Comment: 16 pages, two-column PRB format; 5 figure
