Gapped tunneling spectra in the normal state of Pr2−x_{2-x}Cex_xCuO4_4

We present tunneling data in the normal state of the electron doped cuprate superconductor Pr2−x_{2-x}Cex_xCuO4_4 for three different values of the doping xx. The normal state is obtained by applying a magnetic field greater than the upper critical field, Hc2H_{c2} for T<TcT < T_c. We observe an anomalous normal state gap near the Fermi level. From our analysis of the tunneling data we conclude that this is a feature of the normal state density of states. We discuss possible reasons for the formation of this gap and its implications for the nature of the charge carriers in the normal and the superconducting states of cuprate superconductors.Comment: 7 pages ReVTeX, 11 figures files included, submitted to PR

Role of oxygen in the electron-doped superconducting cuprates

We report on resistivity and Hall measurements in thin films of the electron-doped superconducting cuprate Pr2−x_{2-x}Cex_{x}CuO4±δ_{4\pm\delta}. Comparisons between x = 0.17 samples subjected to either ion-irradiation or oxygenation demonstrate that changing the oxygen content has two separable effects: 1) a doping effect similar to that of cerium, and 2) a disorder effect. These results are consistent with prior speculations that apical oxygen removal is necessary to achieve superconductivity in this compound.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figure

Manderlay (2005): Lars von Trier’s Narrative of Passing

    Get PDF
Von Trier, the maverick Danish director, has over the course of his career earned a reputation for being difficult; he has a tendency to create films that are not only challenging but demand an active level of participation from his audience. The film Manderlay (2005) continues this tradition of provoking intellectual debate. Whereas numerous scholars and critics have recognised that the film can be read as a metaphorical reference to George W. Bush's invasion of Iraq, this article interprets Manderlay as an allegory for the way African Americans have been represented by the US film industry

Learning fuzzy rule-based neural networks for function approximation

    Get PDF
In this paper, we present a method for the induction of fuzzy logic rules to predict a numerical function from samples of the function and its dependent variables. This method uses an information-theoretic approach based on our previous work with discrete-valued data [3]. The rules learned can then be used in a neural network to predict the function value based upon its dependent variables. An example is shown of learning a control system function

Interpretation of the angular dependence of the de Haas-van Alphen effect in MgB_2

We present detailed results for the amplitude and field dependence of the de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) signal arising from the electron-like π\pi sheet of Fermi surface in MgB_2. Our data and analysis show that the dip in dHvA amplitude when the field is close to the basal plane is caused by a beat between two very similar dHvA frequencies and not a spin-zero effect as previously assumed. Our results imply that the Stoner enhancement factors in MgB_2 are small on both the Sigma and Pi sheets.Comment: 4 pages with figures. Submitted to PR

Audit of antenatal clinic for high-risk obstetric patients; activity and outcomes

A specialised clinic for the antenatal care of high-risk patients was established in Cork in January 2004. It is led by 2 specialists in materno-fetal medicine and provides care for patients from a large catchment area. Small clinic numbers, specialised midwives, ready access to medical experts and fetal assessment facilities, facilitate an efficient use of resources. We report on the experience and outcomes of this clinic after the first year in operation. A database was set up to store relevant information on patients who attended the clinic in 2004. 143 patients attended. Risk categories included maternal medical disease (62%); multiple pregnancy (11%); previous poor obstetric history (10%); fetal anomaly (8%). Average gestation; 35.9 weeks, average birth weight; 2598g. Caesarean section rate; 41%. Perinatal mortality rate 67 per 1000 (uncorrected); and 20% neonates required NICU care. This approach to highrisk obstetric care resulted in favourable outcomes. The management strategy applied in Cork may be a suitable prototype for comparable areas throughout Ireland

An examination of the effects of self-regulatory focus on the perception of the media richness: the case of email

    Get PDF
Communication is a key element in organizations’ business success. The media richness theory and the channel expansion theory are two of the most influential theories regarding the selection and use of communication media in organizations; however, literature has focused little on the effects of self-regulation by managers and employees in these theories. To analyze these topics, this study develops an empirical investigation by gathering data from 600 managers and employees using a questionnaire. The results suggest that the perception of media richness is positively affected when the individual shows a promotion focus or strategy.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author’s final draft
