A Simple But Highly Selective Electrochemical Sensor for Dopamine

A modified platinum electrode was fabricated by the electropolymerization of pyrrole using a sodium p-sulphonatocalix[6]arene as the supporting electrolyte. The modified electrode acts as a reasonably sensitive electrochemical sensor for dopamine giving a linear calibration curve in the range 0.075 – 1.00 mM dopamine. The sensor shows no ability to sense the common interferent ascorbic acid, therefore the concentration for dopamine can be directly sensed in a large excess of ascorbic acid with no need to make adjustments for the signal for ascorbic acid. Observations on the distribution of monophasic Salmonella Typhimurium on pig farms in Great Britain

Ten pig herds were visited and intensively sampled to determine the within group prevalence, distribution of contamination and numbers of Salmonella organisms excreted by infected pigs. The distribution of infection was highly variable but on all farms with breeding pigs the breeding herd was involved, even though the occurrence of the organism was greater in growing and fattening pigs. Infection was less common in farrowing areas. Involvement of wild birds and contamination of soil on outdoor units was frequently found

Presence of Accessible Equipment and Interior Elements in Primary Care Offices

Purpose: To describe the disability accessibility level of primary care office interiors and the presence of accessible examination equipment. Methods: Data from on-site audits of 3993 primary care offices in California for 2013–2016 are descriptively analyzed. Architectural access is assessed using an instrument based on ADA Accessibility guidelines (ADAAG), along with noting accessibility of examination equipment. Results: Compliance across architectural elements was *85%. Accessible examination tables and scales were observed in 19.1% and 10.9% of offices, respectively. Conclusions: Proactive accessibility auditing makes visible the infrequent presence of accessible examination equipment. Quantum signatures of chaos in the dynamics of a trapped ion

We show how a nonlinear chaotic system, the parametrically kicked nonlinear oscillator, may be realised in the dynamics of a trapped, laser-cooled ion, interacting with a sequence of standing wave pulses. Unlike the original optical scheme [G.J.Milburn and C.A.Holmes, Phys. Rev A, 44, p4704, (1991)], the trapped ion enables strongly quantum dynamics with minimal dissipation. Role of TET dioxygenases in the regulation of both normal and pathological hematopoiesis

The family of ten-eleven translocation dioxygenases (TETs) consists of TET1, TET2, and TET3. Although all TETs are expressed in hematopoietic tissues, only TET2 is commonly found to be mutated in age-related clonal hematopoiesis and hematopoietic malignancies. TET2 mutation causes abnormal epigenetic landscape changes and results in multiple stages of lineage commitment/differentiation defects as well as genetic instability in hematopoietic stem/progenitor cells (HSPCs). TET2 mutations are founder mutations (first hits) in approximately 40–50% of cases of TET2-mutant (TET2MT) hematopoietic malignancies and are later hits in the remaining cases. In both situations, TET2MT collaborates with co-occurring mutations to promote malignant transformation. In TET2MT tumor cells, TET1 and TET3 partially compensate for TET2 activity and contribute to the pathogenesis of TET2MT hematopoietic malignancies. Here we summarize the most recent research on TETs in regulating of both normal and pathogenic hematopoiesis. We review the concomitant mutations and aberrant signals in TET2MT malignancies. We also discuss the molecular mechanisms by which concomitant mutations and aberrant signals determine lineage commitment in HSPCs and the identity of hematopoietic malignancies. Finally, we discuss potential strategies to treat TET2MT hematopoietic malignancies, including reverting the methylation state of TET2 target genes and targeting the concomitant mutations and aberrant signals

When discussing the success of China's transition from socialism, there is a tendency to focus on growth figures as an indication of performance. Whilst these figures are indeed impressive, we should not confuse growth with development and assume that the former necessarily automatically generates the latter. Much has been done to reduce poverty in China, but the task is not as complete as some observers would suggest; particularly in terms of access to health, education and welfare, and also in dealing with relative (rather than absolute) depravation and poverty. Visions of China have been constructed that exaggerate Chinese development and power in the global system partly to serve political interests, but partly due to the failure to consider the relationship between growth and development, partly due to the failure to disaggregate who gets what in China, and partly due to the persistence of inter-national conceptions of globalised production, trade, and financial flows
