Scattering from Finite by Infinite Periodic Arrays with Arbitrary Piecewise-Linear Slot Elements

    Get PDF
A numerical model for analyzing electromagnetic scattering from a planar Frequency Selective Surface (FSS) is developed. The model can represent an FSS with multiple arrays of arbitrary piecewise linear scatterers in a stratified dielectric medium. The FSS\u27s arrays are finite by infinite, accounting for edge effects, where a periodic array element is formed from the piecewise linear connection of thin slots in a groundplane. The stratified dielectric medium is defined as an arbitrary stack of lossless dielectric slabs that sandwich the user defined arrays, simulating an FSS. The Surface Equivalence theorem is used to construct an equivalent problem based on groundplanes and magnetic current sources. Integral equations based on the equivalent magnetic scattering currents are solved via the moment method. These unknown currents are expanded such that independent modes are defined for each infinite column of an array, where the current fluctuations along each column are defined in terms of a reference element and Floquet\u27s theorem. Individual column contributions are determined using the Array Scanning Method, preserving the plane wave form of the solution. The model has been implemented in a user-friendly computer program, and admittance calculations and scattering predictions have been validated against measured data and appropriately similar FSS codes

Trace checking of Metric Temporal Logic with Aggregating Modalities using MapReduce

    Get PDF
Modern complex software systems produce a large amount of execution data, often stored in logs. These logs can be analyzed using trace checking techniques to check whether the system complies with its requirements specifications. Often these specifications express quantitative properties of the system, which include timing constraints as well as higher-level constraints on the occurrences of significant events, expressed using aggregate operators. In this paper we present an algorithm that exploits the MapReduce programming model to check specifications expressed in a metric temporal logic with aggregating modalities, over large execution traces. The algorithm exploits the structure of the formula to parallelize the evaluation, with a significant gain in time. We report on the assessment of the implementation - based on the Hadoop framework - of the proposed algorithm and comment on its scalability.Comment: 16 pages, 6 figures, Extended version of the SEFM 2014 pape

Estimation of the Coefficient of Double-Reduction in Autotetraploid Lucerne

Polyploidy plays an important role in the evolution of species and many cultivated species, particularly in angiosperms, are polyploids (Bever and Felber, 1992; Gallais, 2003). Autopolyploid species that show a tetrasomic inheritance have complex genetics. However, some theoretical models were built for: (1) genetic mapping (Hackett et al., 1998), (2) quantitative genetics (Gallais, 2003) and (3) population genetics (Ronfort et al., 1998). But in practice, most data analyses ignore one essential feature of tetrasomic inheritance that is double-reduction. Indeed, in an autotetraploid species, homologous chromosomes can form tetravalents at meiosis. In this case, a double-reduction is observed if crossing-over occurs between a locus and its centromere, and if the sister chromatids migrate to the same pole at anaphase I. The gametes may, thus, carry a pair of sister alleles. Double-reduction frequency is represented by the index of separation (α) (Demarly, 1963; Mather, 1935; Mather, 1936). The parameter α is considered as a product of four probabilities: α = q e a s (Gallais, 2003) in which “ q ” is the probability of multivalent formation, “ e ” the probability of first equational division, related to the frequency of crossing-over, “ a ” is the probability of non-disjunction at first anaphase and “s” is the probability of having two sister chromatids in the same gamete. If separation during anaphase II is random, s = ½. Consequently, α will be low for a gene located in the vicinity of the centromere and will increase with distance between the gene and the centromere. It was demonstrated that double-reduction events alter the rate of progression towards equilibrium under inbreeding or under random mating, modify the recombination rate between loci and also alter the rate of decay of linkage disequilibrium under random mating (Bever and Felber, 1992). Current theoretical models allow drawing genetic maps taking into account double-reduction (Luo et al., 2004). Thus, it is possible to estimate α for codominant loci in tetraploid species. To date, we have few estimates of the double-reduction frequency. Haynes and Douches (1993) on potato and Julier et al. (2003) on lucerne found that double-reduction occurs sporadically. In both studies, the low number of progenies hampered a precise estimation of α. The aim of our study was to estimate the frequency of double-reduction in a mapping population of lucerne that includes a large number of individuals

Synthesis by the polyol process and ionic conductivity of nanostructured La2Mo2O9 powders

International audienceLa2Mo2O9 nanostructured powders were synthesized by the polyol process. The effects of the nature of the polyol, the refluxing time, the hydrolysis ratio, the metal concentration and the addition of hydroxide ions, on the purity and morphology of the powders are determined. Two main morphologies are observed, the particles being in the shape of platelets or spheres, with respectively diethylene glycol or ethylene glycol as solvent. A specific surface area of 24 m2/g was reached by varying the metal concentration. The conductivity measurements were recorded on pellets that present in some cases a closed porosity, the relative density reaching 95% without any milling step. According to the synthesis parameters, the grain conductivity can be slightly increased, the total conductivity remaining only slightly lower than that of pellets made of powders synthesized by solid state reaction

IMPLEMENTATION OF AREA AND DELAY COMPARISON 0.FUNCTION USING QUANTUM-DOT CELLULAR AUTOMATA

Quantum-dot cellular automata (QCA) are an attractive emerging technology suitable for the development of ultra-dense-low-power high-performance digital circuits. Efficient solutions have recently been proposed for several arithmetic circuits, such as adders, multipliers, and comparators. Nevertheless, sincethe design of digital circuits in QCA still poses several challenges, novel implementation strategies and methodologies are highly desirable. This paper proposes a new design approach oriented to the implementation of binary comparators in QCA. New formulations of basic logic equations required to perform the comparison function are proposed. The new strategy has been exploited in the design of two different comparator architectures and for several operands word lengths. With respect to existing counterparts, the comparators proposed here exhibit significantly higher speed and reduced overall area. The proposed scheme, we deal with 32-bit numbers with less number of resources unlike conventional comparators, which leads to the realization of low power and area efficient comparator. This comparator can be widely used in central processing units (CPUs) and microcontrollers

Distinct expression profiles of TGF-β1 signaling mediators in pathogenic SIVmac and non-pathogenic SIVagm infections

BACKGROUND: The generalized T-cell activation characterizing HIV-1 and SIVmac infections in humans and macaques (MACs) is not found in the non-pathogenic SIVagm infection in African green monkeys (AGMs). We have previously shown that TGF-β1, Foxp3 and IL-10 are induced very early after SIVagm infection. In SIVmac-infected MACs, plasma TGF-β1 induction persists during primary infection [1]. We raised the hypothesis that MACs are unable to respond to TGF-β1 and thus cannot resorb virus-driven inflammation. We therefore compared the very early expression dynamics of pro- and anti-inflammatory markers as well as of factors involved in the TGF-β1 signaling pathway in SIV-infected AGMs and MACs. METHODS: Levels of transcripts encoding for pro- and anti-inflammatory markers (tnf-α, ifn-γ, il-10, t-bet, gata-3) as well as for TGF-β1 signaling mediators (smad3, smad4, smad7) were followed by real time PCR in a prospective study enrolling 6 AGMs and 6 MACs. RESULTS: During primary SIVmac infection, up-regulations of tnf-α, ifn-γ and t-bet responses (days 1–16 p.i.) were stronger whereas il-10 response was delayed (4(th )week p.i.) compared to SIVagm infection. Up-regulation of smad7 (days 3–8 p.i.), a cellular mediator inhibiting the TGF-β1 signaling cascade, characterized SIV-infected MACs. In AGMs, we found increases of gata-3 but not t-bet, a longer lasting up-regulation of smad4 (days 1–21 p.i), a mediator enhancing TGF-β1 signaling, and no smad7 up-regulations. CONCLUSION: Our data suggest that the inability to resorb virus-driven inflammation and activation during the pathogenic HIV-1/SIVmac infections is associated with an unresponsiveness to TGF-β1

Conserved presence of G-quadruplex forming sequences in the Long Terminal Repeat Promoter of Lentiviruses

G-quadruplexes (G4s) are secondary structures of nucleic acids that epigenetically regulate cellular processes. In the human immunodeficiency lentivirus 1 (HIV-1), dynamic G4s are located in the unique viral LTR promoter. Folding of HIV-1 LTR G4s inhibits viral transcription; stabilization by G4 ligands intensifies this effect. Cellular proteins modulate viral transcription by inducing/unfolding LTR G4s. We here expanded our investigation on the presence of LTR G4s to all lentiviruses. G4s in the 5'-LTR U3 region were completely conserved in primate lentiviruses. A G4 was also present in a cattle-infecting lentivirus. All other non-primate lentiviruses displayed hints of less stable G4s. In primate lentiviruses, the possibility to fold into G4s was highly conserved among strains. LTR G4 sequences were very similar among phylogenetically related primate viruses, while they increasingly differed in viruses that diverged early from a common ancestor. A strong correlation between primate lentivirus LTR G4s and Sp1/NF\u3baB binding sites was found. All LTR G4s folded: their complexity was assessed by polymerase stop assay. Our data support a role of the lentiviruses 5'-LTR G4 region as control centre of viral transcription, where folding/unfolding of G4s and multiple recruitment of factors based on both sequence and structure may take place
