Conservatism implications of shock test tailoring for multiple design environments
A method for analyzing shock conservation in test specifications that have been tailored to qualify a structure for multiple design environments is discussed. Shock test conservation is qualified for shock response spectra, shock intensity spectra and ranked peak acceleration data in terms of an Index of Conservation (IOC) and an Overtest Factor (OTF). The multi-environment conservation analysis addresses the issue of both absolute and average conservation. The method is demonstrated in a case where four laboratory tests have been specified to qualify a component which must survive seven different field environments. Final judgment of the tailored test specification is shown to require an understanding of the predominant failure modes of the test item
The Forcing Strong Metric Dimension of a Graph
For any two vertices u, v in a connected graph G, the interval I(u, v) consists of all vertices which are lying in some u − v shortest path in G. A vertex x in a graph G strongly resolves a pair of vertices u, v if either u ∈ I(x, v) or v ∈ I(x, u). A set of vertices W of V (G) is called a strong resolving set if every pair of vertices of G is strongly resolved by some vertex of W. The minimum cardinality of a strong resolving set in G is called the strong metric dimension number of G and it is denoted by sdim(G). For a strong resolving set W of G, a subset S ofW is called the forcing subset of W if W is the unique strong resolving set containing S. The forcing number f(W, sdim(G)) of W in G is the minimum cardinality of a forcing subset for W, while the forcing strong metric dimension, fsdim(G), of G is the smallest forcing number among all strong resolving sets of G. The forcing strong metric dimensions of some well-known graphs are determined. It is shown that for any positiveintegers a and b, with 0 ≤ a ≤ b, there is nontrivial connected graph G with sdim(G) = b and fsdim(G) = a if and only if {a, b} not equal to {0, 1}

Magnetic Interaction in the Geometrically Frustrated Triangular Lattice Antiferromagnet
The spin wave excitations of the geometrically frustrated triangular lattice
antiferromagnet (TLA) have been measured using high resolution
inelastic neutron scattering. Antiferromagnetic interactions up to third
nearest neighbors in the ab plane (J_1, J_2, J_3, with
and ), as well as out-of-plane coupling (J_z, with
) are required to describe the spin wave dispersion
relations, indicating a three dimensional character of the magnetic
interactions. Two energy dips in the spin wave dispersion occur at the
incommensurate wavevectors associated with multiferroic phase, and can be
interpreted as dynamic precursors to the magnetoelectric behavior in this
system.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, published in Phys. Rev. Let
Globalization, territory and institutions : the case of Barranquilla, Colombia, 1990-2010
This paper studies the relationship between globalization and territory from an institutional economics perspective. The goal is to show that the notion of territory as a specific geographic space is an important factor and that territory exists wherever human agency interacts with social, political, institutional and economic structures. From this perspective, we examine the case of Barranquilla, Colombia, to show that cities must not only be close to the sea to take part in the global economy but that ceremonial/instrumental institutional patterns are also important to understand and evaluate the impact of globalization on a specific territory. When several leaders of Barranquilla's social and economic sectors exhibited a clear civic commitment (i.e., when they supported instrumental institutions), the city achieved a good economic performance. The opposite outcome happened when ceremonial features and inadequate institutions had imposed their logic on the city's economygráficas, tablas.Incluye referencias bibliográficas (páginas 55-57)
Robust Ferroelectric State in Multiferroic MnZnWO
We report the remarkably robust ferroelectric state in the multiferroic
compound MnZnWO. The substitution of the magnetic Mn
with nonmagnetic Zn reduces the magnetic exchange and provides control
of the various magnetic and multiferroic states of MnWO. Only 5 % of Zn
substitution results in a complete suppression of the frustrated collinear
(paraelectric) low temperature phase. The helical magnetic and ferroelectric
phase develops as the ground state. The multiferroic state is stable up to a
high level of substitution of more than 50 %. The magnetic, thermodynamic, and
dielectric properties as well as the ferroelectric polarization of single
crystals of MnZnWO are studied for different substitutions up
to x=0.5. The magnetic phases have been identified in single crystal neutron
scattering experiments. The ferroelectric polarization scales with the neutron
intensity of the incommensurate peak of the helical phase.Comment: 6 pages, 8 figure
