    Get PDF
    In 2009, Aimee Mullins delivered a speech at a TEDMED Conference, “The Opportunity of Adversity.” Her speech speaks to the unlimited possibilities and potential that a person has when boundaries of stigmas and preconceptions are dismantled. Mullins’ personal and professional experiences, along with her charisma and interrelatedness, has earned her a high regard in a diverse community. This article is an analysis of her speech in accordance to the Neo-Aristotelian approach and the five canons. This article supports the argument that, because of her genuine approach, Mullins has made an influential contribution the conversation of equal rights and a humble humankind that continues on today

    Coordinated design of coding and modulation systems

    Get PDF
    The joint optimization of the coding and modulation systems employed in telemetry systems was investigated. Emphasis was placed on formulating inner and outer coding standards used by the Goddard Spaceflight Center. Convolutional codes were found that are nearly optimum for use with Viterbi decoding in the inner coding of concatenated coding systems. A convolutional code, the unit-memory code, was discovered and is ideal for inner system usage because of its byte-oriented structure. Simulations of sequential decoding on the deep-space channel were carried out to compare directly various convolutional codes that are proposed for use in deep-space systems

    Spatially Resolved Spectroscopic Study of nearby Seyfert Galaxies: Implications for a Population of "Missed" Seyferts at High-z\textit{z}

    We present mosaicked long-slit spectral maps of 18 nearby Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs), 2 LINERs, and 4 star-forming galaxies. With the resulting data cubes taken using the Kast dual spectrograph on the 3 m Shane telescope of the Lick Observatory, we measure the aperture effects on the spectroscopic classification of AGNs. With more starlight included in a larger aperture, the nuclear spectrum that is Seyfert-like may become contaminated. We generated standard spectroscopic classification diagrams in different observing apertures. These show quantitatively how the ensemble of Seyferts migrates toward the H II\scriptsize{\textrm{II}} region classification when being observed with increasing aperture sizes. But the effect ranges widely in individual active galaxies. Some of the less luminous Seyferts shfit by a large amount, while some other barely move or even shift in different directions. We find that those Seyfert galaxies with the fraction of nuclear Hα\alpha emission lower than 0.2 of the host galaxy, 2-10 keV hard X-ray luminosity lower than 104310^{43} erg s−1^{-1}, and the observed nuclear [O III\scriptsize{\textrm{III}}] luminosity lower than 1040.510^{40.5} erg s−1^{-1}, are more likely to change activity classification type when the entire host galaxy is included. Overall, 4 of our 24 galaxies (18 Seyferts) change their spectral activity classification type when observed with a very large aperture.Comment: 11 pages with 8 figure

    Stimulative Work Valuation Among Real Estate Practitioners in Asia

    Get PDF
    Real estate or property production has been recognized as one of Asia's key industries. Based on this significance, the authors assessed the work centrality and working values of real estate practitioners in established Asian countries. Based on the findings, in terms of work centrality, Japan was rated high on work centrality as very important in six life aspects among the five countries, followed by Indonesia, the Philippines, Malaysia, and Myanmar. Findings on work values were all significant among the five countries, headed by Japan, Indonesia, Myanmar, Malaysia, and the Philippines. There is a substantial difference in the perception of work centrality among respondents in five countries, as revealed by Indonesia and Myanmar and Myanmar and Japan. Some countries differ in work values as manifested by Malaysia and Japan, highly significant, like Myanmar and Japan, and the Philippines. Enablers for success in the real estate profession include enterprising and conventional interests and various work values listed by experts in the field. Based on the study's findings, it can be seen that work centrality and work values among the five Asian countries differ from each other. Capability Building Index is now recommended for adoption by the real estate practitioners

    "'Asianness Under Construction:' The Contours and Negotiation of Panethnic Identity/Culture among Interethnically Married Asian Americans."

    Based on life-history interviews of interethnically married U.S.-raised Asians, this article examines the meaning and dynamics of Asian American interethnic marriages, and what they reveal about the complex incorporative process of this “in-between” racial minority group into the U.S.. In particular, this article explores the connection between Asian American interethnic marriage and pan-Asian consciousness/identity, both in terms of how panethnicity shapes romantic/ marital desires of individuals and how pan-Asian culture and identity is invented and negotiated in the process of family-making. My findings indicate that while strong pan-Asian consciousness/ identity underlies the connection among intermarried couples, these unions are not simply a defensive effort to “preserve” Asian-ethnic identity and cultur against a society that still racializes Asian Americans, but a tentative and often unpremeditated effort to navigate a path toward integration into the society through an ethnically based, albeit hybrid and reconstructed identity and culture, that helps the respondents retain the integrity of “Asianness.

    “El Sexo no es Malo”: Maternal Values Accompanying Contraceptive Use Advice to Young Latina Adolescent Daughters

    In this study, we utilized observational methods to identify maternal values and concerns accompanying contraceptive use advice in Latina mother–daughter sexuality conversations. The sample included non-sexually active early adolescents around 12 years of age and their mostly Spanish-speaking Latina mothers. Videotaped conversations were coded for the prevalence of messages related to four sexual values (abstinence, delay sex until older, sex is “normal”, sex is “improper”) and concerns about pregnancy and STD transmission. We examined whether the duration of time spent conversing about these messages was associated with participant characteristics, general communication openness, and the amount of time the dyads spent discussing contraceptive use. Results indicated that Latina mothers who had fewer years of education and lower family income talked longer to their daughters about the need to delay sex, avoid risky situations that would increase their chances of getting pregnant or acquiring an STD, and engage in self-protective practices. Less perceived openness in general communication as reported by both the mothers and the daughters was associated with increased time discussing that sex is improper. Although the duration of contraceptive use messages was brief, mothers and daughters who discussed the fact that sex is normal, and who communicated more about the importance of delaying sex, talked longer about contraceptive use practices compared to mothers and daughters who engaged in minimal discussion of these sexual values

    Remote Teaching and Learning in the Context of COVID-19 Pandemic

    Full text link
    This article aims to provide a clear lens of the new trend in the academe in terms of teaching and learning in the context of COVID-19 pandemic in the Philippines. It also highlights the pedagogical approaches used in the conduct of online classes, challenges, and opportunities in teaching and learning. Through literature-based methodology, the authors as academicians, described, summarized and analysed data using the four-step approach by UNESCO (2020). Findings showed that the most common strategy that had been designed and utilized to mirror the classroom environment was the synchronous and the asynchronous online teaching and learning approach. The implementation of online teaching and learning modality was embraced by both teachers and students despite being unprepared to the abrupt change. Educational institutions had sustained the delivery of education for the past school year despite noticeable risks, problems and challenges. The continuous improvement is still underway and educational administrators are looking at possible means to fill the identified gaps. The abrupt change in the teaching and learning has given an opportunity for teachers to teach innovatively and students learn independently. Providing a full report on the status of teaching and learning during the pandemic gives a full overview of the actual academe scenario as an effect of the pandemic. Challenges and opportunities identified provide the real scenario of online teaching

    Streptavidin-Saporin: Converting Biotinylated Materials into Targeted Toxins

    No full text
    Streptavidin-Saporin can be considered a type of ‘secondary’ targeted toxin. The scientific community has taken advantage of this conjugate in clever and fruitful ways using many kinds of biotinylated targeting agents to send saporin into a cell selected for elimination. Saporin is a ribosome-inactivating protein that causes inhibition of protein synthesis and cell death when delivered inside a cell. Streptavidin-Saporin, mixed with biotinylated molecules to cell surface markers, results in powerful conjugates that are used both in vitro and in vivo for behavior and disease research. Streptavidin-Saporin harnesses the ‘Molecular Surgery’ capability of saporin, creating a modular arsenal of targeted toxins used in applications ranging from the screening of potential therapeutics to behavioral studies and animal models. The reagent has become a well-published and validated resource in academia and industry. The ease of use and diverse functionality of Streptavidin-Saporin continues to have a significant impact on the life science industry
