    PROGRAMA DE VACUNACIÓN CONTRA Metapneumovirus aviar EN POLLOS DE CARNE

    A vaccination programme against Avian metapneumovirus (aMPV) in broilers was evaluated using a live virus vaccine against aMPV with the strain chicken 1062, title of 102.4 DICT50 sprayed at first day of age. The study conducted in two commercial farms of poultry growers, located in a region where the Swollen Head Syndrome (SHS) is prevalent. A flock of 185 593 1-day old broilers of both sexes, Cobb Vantress 500 line, were distributed in a vaccinated group against aMPV and a control group not vaccinated against aMPV. It was evaluated the presentation of SHS, intensity of respiratory signs, post mortem lesions, productive parameters, mortality, and serological response by indirect ELISA test. Only the vaccinated group had birds with SHS during the 3rd and 4th week of age, showing intense respiratory signs and severe post mortem lesions at respiratory tract level. The control group showed better performance than the vaccinated group (additional 106 and 75 g of body weight in males and females than controls, p<0.05), and 75 and 4 points less of conversion index in male and females than controls respectively. However, the control group had a higher accumulative mortality (0.64%) than the vaccinated group (0.42%), mainly due to congestive problems. The results suggested that in vaccination against aMPV in chicken broilers, males are more sensitive than females to the occurrence of SHS.Se evaluó la efectividad de un programa de vacunación contra Metapneumovirus aviar (aMPV) en pollos de carne, empleando una vacuna a virus vivo contra el aMPV conteniendo la cepa pollo 1062 subtipo B, con un título de 102.4 DICT50. La vacuna se administró al 1er día de edad por aspersión. El estudio se realizó en dos granjas comerciales de una integración avícola ubicada en una zona donde el Síndrome de Cabeza Hinchada (SCH) es un problema frecuente. Se utilizó un total de 185 593 pollos de 1 día de edad, de ambos sexos, de la línea Cobb Vantress, distribuidos en un grupo experimental vacunado contra el aMPV y un grupo control no vacunado contra aMPV. Se evaluó la presentación de SCH, intensidad de signos clínicos respiratorios, lesiones post mortem, parámetros productivos, mortalidad y respuesta serológica mediante la prueba de ELISA indirecta. Sólo el grupo experimental presentó aves con SCH durante la 3ª y 4ª semana de edad, presentando signos clínicos respiratorios más intensos y lesiones post mortem más severas a nivel del tracto respiratorio. El grupo control presentó mejores parámetros productivos (106 y 75 g adicionales de peso corporal en machos y hembras, p<0.05) y 75 y 4 puntos menos de I.C.A. en machos y hembras, respectivamente, que el grupo experimental; sin embargo, presentó una mayor mortalidad acumulada (0.64%) que el grupo experimental (0.42%) debido a una mayor frecuencia de problemas congestivos. Los resultados sugieren que la vacunación contra aMPV predispone, principalmente a los machos, a la presentación del SCH

    Field study of parasitic contamination of fruits, vegetables and leafy greens in the Ecuadorian Andes [version 1; peer review: 2 approved, 1 approved with reservations]

    Background: Raw vegetables have been considered vehicles of enteroparasites. South American countries are among the most important exporters of fresh vegetables; Ecuador has tropical climates and soils rich in organic matter that allow it to harvest throughout the year for sale to different countries. The aim of the study was to assess the occurrence of the parasitic contamination of fruits, vegetables and leafy greens grown in an agricultural area of the Ecuadorian Andes. Methods: A field study, cross-sectional, snowball sampling was conducted on 1,416 samples (516 fruits, 488 vegetables, and 412 leafy greens). Each sample were washed with water, and the resulting solution after removing the vegetables, was subjected to 24-hour sedimentation. The concentrated sediment underwent microscopic analysis. Results: Parasites were detected in 63.4% of the samples, leafy greens were the most contaminated (76.9%) (P<0.0001), (vegetables 67.8% and fruit 48.4%), of these, cabbage (100%), onions (84%) and strawberries (60.2%) were the most contaminated. Protozoa were more frequent (49.6%) than helminths (15.5%) (P<0.0001). Blastocystis sp. (33.5%) was the highest, followed by Eimeria spp. (26.3%), Entamoeba spp. (10.3%), Giardia spp. (8.3%), Balantidium spp. (6.9%); Cryptosporidium spp. (6.6%), Cyclospora spp. (4.4%), Cystoisospora spp. (0.5%); Strongylida (15.5%) and Ascaris spp. (0.4%). Conclusion: The consumption of fruits, vegetables, and leafy greens from these crops is a possible source of infection to humans and animals in this area or in nonendemic areas where these products are marketed. This study establishes the need for strict hygienic measures in growing; this will be properly achieved by the treatment of the soil, manure and water used for cultivation

    Activity patterns of tayra (Eira barbara) across their distribution

    Species' activity patterns are driven by the need to meet basic requirements of food, social interactions, movement, and rest, but often are influenced by a variety of biotic and abiotic factors. We used camera-trap data to describe and compare the activity patterns of the relatively poorly studied tayra (Eira barbara) across 10 populations distributed from the south of Mexico to the north of Argentina, and attempted to identify biotic or abiotic factors that may be associated with variation in level of diurnality. In a subset of sites we also aimed to document potential seasonal variation in activity. We used a kernel density estimator based on the time of independent photographic events to calculate the proportion of diurnal, crepuscular, and nocturnal activity of each population. Tayras were mostly active during diurnal periods (79.31%, 759 records), with a lower proportion of crepuscular activity (18.07%, 173 records) yet we documented some variation in patterns across the 10 study areas (activity overlap coefficient varied from Δ4 = 0.64 to Δ1 = 0.95). In northern localities, activity peaked twice during the day (bimodal) with most activity ocurring in the morning, whereas closer to the geographical equator, activity was constant (unimodal) throughout the day, peaking at midday: activity either was unimodal or bimodal in southern localities. Despite investigating multiple potential abiotic and biotic predictors, only latitude was associated with variation in the proportion of diurnal activity by tayras across its range, with increased diurnal activity closer to the equator. Seasonal comparisons in activity showed a tendency to reduce diurnality in dry versus rainy seasons, but the pattern was not consistently significant. This is the most comprehensive description of tayra activity patterns to date, and lends novel insight into the potential flexibility of the species to adapt to local conditions.Fil: Villafañe Trujillo, Álvaro José.     High Estradiol Differentially Affects the Expression of the Glucose Transporter Type 4 in Pelvic Floor Muscles of Rats

    Purpose To characterize the relationship between serum estradiol levels and the expression of glucose transporter type 4 (Glut4) in the pubococcygeus and iliococcygeus muscles in female rats. Methods The muscles were excised from virgin rats during the metestrus and proestrus stages of the estrous cycle, and from sham and ovariectomized rats implanted with empty or estradiol benzoate–filled capsules. The expression of estrogen receptors (ERs) was inspected in the muscles at metestrus and proestrus. Relative Glut4 expression, glycogen content, and serum glucose levels were measured. Appropriate statistical tests were done to identify significant differences (P≤0.05). Results The pubococcygeus and iliococcygeus muscles expressed ERα and ERβ. Glut4 expression and glycogen content in the pubococcygeus muscle were higher at proestrus than at metestrus. No significant changes were observed in the iliococcygeus muscle. In ovariectomized rats, the administration of estradiol benzoate increased Glut4 expression and glycogen content in the pubococcygeus muscle alone. Conclusions High serum estradiol levels increased Glut4 expression and glycogen content in the pubococcygeus muscle, but not in the iliococcygeus muscle

    Reversal of SARS-CoV2-Induced Hypoxia by Nebulized Sodium Ibuprofenate in a Compassionate Use Program

    Introduction: Sodium ibuprofenate in hypertonic saline (NaIHS) administered directly to the lungs by nebulization and inhalation has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effects, with the potential to deliver these benefits to hypoxic patients. We describe a compassionate use program that offered this therapy to hospitalized COVID-19 patients. Methods: NaIHS (50 mg ibuprofen, tid) was provided in addition to standard of care (SOC) to hospitalized COVID-19 patients until oxygen saturation levels of > 94% were achieved on ambient air. Patients wore a containment hood to diminish aerosolization. Outcome data from participating patients treated at multiple hospitals in Argentina between April 4 and October 31, 2020, are summarized. Results were compared with a retrospective contemporaneous control (CC) group of hospitalized COVID-19 patients with SOC alone during the same time frame from a subset of participating hospitals from Córdoba and Buenos Aires. Results: The evolution of 383 patients treated with SOC + NaIHS [56 on mechanical ventilation (MV) at baseline] and 195 CC (21 on MV at baseline) are summarized. At baseline, NaIHS-treated patients had basal oxygen saturation of 90.7 ± 0.2% (74.3% were on supplemental oxygen at baseline) and a basal respiratory rate of 22.7 ± 0.3 breath/min. In the CC group, basal oxygen saturation was 92.6 ± 0.4% (52.1% were on oxygen supplementation at baseline) and respiratory rate was 19.3 ± 0.3 breath/min. Despite greater pulmonary compromise at baseline in the NaIHS-treated group, the length of treatment (LOT) was 9.1 ± 0.2 gs with an average length of stay (ALOS) of 11.5 ± 0.3 days, in comparison with an ALOS of 13.3 ± 0.9 days in the CC group. In patients on MV who received NaIHS, the ALOS was lower than in the CC group. In both NaIHS-treated groups, a rapid reversal of deterioration in oxygenation and NEWS2 scores was observed acutely after initiation of NaIHS therapy. No serious adverse events were considered related to ibuprofen therapy. Mortality was lower in both NaIHS groups compared with CC groups. Conclusions: Treatment of COVID-19 pneumonitis with inhalational nebulized NaIHS was associated with rapid improvement in hypoxia and vital signs, with no serious adverse events attributed to therapy.
