    Agendas for Digital Palaeography in an Archaeological Context: Egypt 1800 BC

    Handwriting raises issues alive in archaeological debates, philosophical and historical. In turn, by their extreme fragmentariness, the earliest archaeological manuscripts could generate usefully different questions for the field of palaeography. Here, digitisation offers new common ground for the separate disciplines in the study of the past. For current archaeological discussions of structure and agency, manuscripts pose the act of writing, between social and individual. For debates over literacy and power in part- literate societies, an archaeological hoard of manuscript fragments offers opportunities to assess our chances of knowing, for one time and place, how many writings and writers. The largest earliest group of writing on papyrus-paper comprises several thousand small fragments from Lahun in Egypt (about 1850–1750 BC). Traditional methods of recording similarity and difference across the collection can now be accelerated to a point of qualitative change, by applying image-matching software. This paper considers the potential of computer-aided palaeography for generating new research agendas

    Rhyme and Word Placement in Storybooks Support High-Level Verb Mapping in 3- to 5-Year-Olds

    High-level verbs can be especially challenging for young children to initially map to meaning. This study manipulated the format of a storybook designed to support such verb learning from shared reading. We tested whether 3- to 5-year-olds (n = 38) could remember the referents of eight new verbs when presented as essential actions within a narrative story but with differences in placement. Children were randomly assigned to either a rhymed condition, in which target verbs were heard at the end of rhyming stanzas making them maximally appreciable, or a control condition, where the verbs were presented in the same story, but not in final position or within a rhymed stanza. After hearing the story, each child was given three sets of retention questions testing their identification, demonstration, and production of the target verbs. Children identified and successfully demonstrated more target verbs in the rhymed condition than the control condition, and only in the rhymed condition did children’s initial verb mappings exceed chance. No differences between conditions were found in children’s ability to produce the target verbs, in part because of how often they reverted to more generic terms to describe the actions in the story. Nonetheless, these findings support the hypothesis that giving children maximal support within a storybook reading context can facilitate an initial grasp on challenging verbs

    Gas adsorption in active carbons and the slit-pore model 2 : mixture adsorption prediction with DFT and IAST

    We use a fast density functional theory (a 'slab-DFT') and the polydisperse independent ideal slit-pore model to predict gas mixture adsorption in active carbons. The DFT is parametrized by fitting to pure gas isotherms generated by Monte Carlo simulation of adsorption in model graphitic slit-pores. Accurate gas molecular models are used in our Monte Carlo simulations with gas-surface interactions calibrated to a high surface area carbon, rather than a low surface area carbon as in all previous work of this type, as described in part 1 of this work (Sweatman, M. B.; Quirke, N. J. Phys. Chem. B 2005, 109, 10381). We predict the adsorption of binary mixtures of carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrogen on two active carbons up to about 30 bar at near-ambient temperatures. We compare two sets of results; one set obtained using only the pure carbon dioxide adsorption isotherm as input to our pore characterization process, and the other obtained using both pure gas isotherms as input. We also compare these results with ideal adsorbed solution theory (IAST). We find that our methods are at least as accurate as IAST for these relatively simple gas mixtures and have the advantage of much greater versatility. We expect similar results for other active carbons and further performance gains for less ideal mixtures

    Simulating fluid-solid equilibrium with the Gibbs ensemble

    The Gibbs ensemble is employed to simulate fluid-solid equilibrium for a shifted-force Lennard-Jones system. This is achieved by generating an accurate canonical Helmholtz free-energy model of the (defect-free) solid phase. This free-energy model is easily generated, with accuracy limited only by finite-size effects, by a single isothermal-isobaric simulation at a pressure not too far from coexistence for which the chemical potential is known. We choose to illustrate this method at the known triple-point because the chemical potential is easily calculated from the coexisting gas. Alternatively, our methods can be used to locate fluid-solid coexistence and the triple-point of pure systems if the chemical potential of the solid phase can be efficiently calculated at a pressure not too far from the actual coexistence pressure. Efficient calculation of the chemical potential of solids would also enable the Gibbs ensemble simulation of bulk solid-solid equilibrium and the grand-canonical ensemble simulation of bulk solids

Our models are used to predict the adsorption of carbon dioxide, methane, nitrogen, and hydrogen up to 50 bar in several active carbons at a range of near-ambient temperatures based on an analysis of a single 293 K carbon dioxide adsorption isotherm. The results demonstrate that these models are useful for relatively simple gases at near-critical or supercritical temperatures

    Providing for the Priceless Student: Ideologies of Choice in an Emerging Educational Market

    The growing popularity of school choice is typically linked to the spread of neoliberal ideology. Identifying four components of this ideology, we examine the rationales of providers in an emerging private school market. Data come from interviews and site visits at 45 “third-sector” private schools in Toronto, Canada. We find that only one of the four components has a strong resonance among these educators. Few private school operators sharply criticize public schools, compete via quantitative performance indicators, or are strongly business oriented. However, they voice a philosophy of matching their personal talents to the needs of “unique” children. Overall, rather than being influenced by neoliberalism, these providers are more directly driven by personalized rationales that prize tailored education in specialized niches. We draw two conclusions from these findings. First, they demonstrate how ideologies of choice are shaped by their market setting, in this case, small proprietorship, in contrast to a corporate environment. Second, they highlight how providers can be motivated by new cultures of consumerism and intensive child rearing when working in highly uncertain conditions. We recommend that theories of choice recognize the range of educational markets and the specific motives of their providers

    Controlling Phalaris Minor in the Indian Rice-Wheat Belt

    The ACIAR-managed project CS1/1996/013, Herbicide-resistant weeds of wheat in India and Australia: integrated management, was designed to find a long-term method of control of Phalaris minor, a problem weed of the rice–wheat cropping system of north-western India. By 1993, the weed had developed resistance to isoproturon, a herbicide which had delivered effective weed control for 15 years. The short-term solution, implemented before the ACIAR project commenced, involved identification and registration of a new set of herbicides. But these new herbicides were expensive. To ensure high adoption they needed to be combined with changes in wheat-growing techniques that would provide cost savings to help farmers pay for them. And to avoid the re-emergence of chemical resistance, they needed to be used sparingly as one element in a broader approach to weed management. The project team used these circumstances to field-test and encourage adoption of zero tillage, a technology that agronomists had been advocating for many years, but which had failed to capture the interest of Indian farmers. Zero tillage has the potential to deliver big cost savings. In addition, it provides prospects for yield increases by allowing early sowing of wheat and avoiding soil degradation. Project research established that zero tillage also provided effective weed control with only a moderate reliance on chemicals, making the re-emergence of herbicide resistance remote. We calculate a gain to the Indian economy of around 1800millioninnetpresentvaluetermsoverthenext30yearsfromtheadoptionofzerotillagetocontrolPhalarisminorinfestationinthericewheatareasofnorthwesternIndia.Thisleadstoanextremelyhighratioofbenefitstoprojectcosts.Zerotillagebyitselfisclearlyaprofitabletechnology.Itdoesnotneedaweedproblemtojustifyitsintroduction.WithouttheACIARproject,zerotillagewouldhavebeenintroducedtotheregion,thoughsomewhatlaterthanwhathasoccurred.OntheassumptionthattheACIARprojecthasadvancedtheadoptionprofileofzerotillageby3years,wecalculategainsthatcanbeattributedtoACIARsroleof1800 million in net present value terms over the next 30 years from the adoption of zero tillage to control Phalaris minor infestation in the rice–wheat areas of north-western India. This leads to an extremely high ratio of benefits to project costs. Zero tillage by itself is clearly a profitable technology. It does not need a weed problem to justify its introduction. Without the ACIAR project, zero tillage would have been introduced to the region, though somewhat later than what has occurred. On the assumption that the ACIAR project has advanced the adoption profile of zero tillage by 3 years, we calculate gains that can be attributed to ACIAR’s role of 238 million in net present value terms over the next 30 years.     TmaDB: a repository for tissue microarray data

    Background: Tissue microarray (TMA) technology has been developed to facilitate large, genome-scale molecular pathology studies. This technique provides a high-throughput method for analyzing a large cohort of clinical specimens in a single experiment thereby permitting the parallel analysis of molecular alterations ( at the DNA, RNA, or protein level) in thousands of tissue specimens. As a vast quantity of data can be generated in a single TMA experiment a systematic approach is required for the storage and analysis of such data. Description: To analyse TMA output a relational database ( known as TmaDB) has been developed to collate all aspects of information relating to TMAs. These data include the TMA construction protocol, experimental protocol and results from the various immunocytological and histochemical staining experiments including the scanned images for each of the TMA cores. Furthermore the database contains pathological information associated with each of the specimens on the TMA slide, the location of the various TMAs and the individual specimen blocks ( from which cores were taken) in the laboratory and their current status i.e. if they can be sectioned into further slides or if they are exhausted. TmaDB has been designed to incorporate and extend many of the published common data elements and the XML format for TMA experiments and is therefore compatible with the TMA data exchange specifications developed by the Association for Pathology Informatics community. Finally the design of the database is made flexible such that TMA experiments from several types of cancer can be stored in a single database, which incorporates the national minimum data set required for pathology reports supported by the Royal College of Pathologists (UK). Conclusion: TmaDB will provide a comprehensive repository for TMA data such that a large number of results from the numerous immunostaining experiments can be efficiently compared for each of the TMA cores. This will allow a systematic, large-scale comparison of tumour samples to facilitate the identification of gene products of clinical importance such as therapeutic or prognostic markers. In addition this work will contribute to the establishment of a standard for reporting TMA data analogous to MIAME in the description of microarray dat

    Opportunities for faculty-librarian collaboration in an expanded dentistry curriculum.

    With the increased emphasis on evidence-based practice, developing information literacy (IL), as well as other literacies (e.g., oral), earlier in programs is becoming widely accepted in medicine and allied fields. However with long-standing programs integration of IL instruction is often unplanned at the programmatic level. This contributes to deficiencies in advanced students and frustrations for students and faculty. The Indiana University School of Dentistry has expanded its Dental Hygiene curriculum from a two-year program to a four-year Bachelor of Science. This expansion provided the opportunity to plan integration of information and oral health literacy instruction and evidence-based practice across the new curriculum. Library and Dental Hygiene faculty collaborated to adapt existing undergraduate and oral health pedagogies and assessments, as well as create new ones which are appropriate for integration into various courses. This expanded curriculum integrates lesson plans, assignments, and assessments that support dental hygiene and other health fields but also complement general education and provide transferrable skills for any major. Courses have heavy librarian integration, both in the classroom and the course management software, as well as asynchronous learning tools, with opportunities for team teaching and robust student assessment, including authentic assessment
