    The Depression, Anxiety, and Stress of Student-Athletes from a Pre- to Post-COVID-19 World

    This study explored differences in student-athletes’ symptoms of depression, anxiety, and stress pre- to post-COVID-19-pandemic. The WHO reported a 25% increase in depression and anxiety rates worldwide, with young people disproportionately affected. Student-athletes face many stressors related to their sporting and academic feats, but what is not known is how the COVID-19 pandemic affected their experiences of symptoms of mental illness. A multiple-cohort cross-sectional study design was employed, and data collected using physical and online surveys. Participants (cohort 1 M age = 20.18 years, SD = 1.52; cohort 2 M age = 19.75 years, SD = 1.45) were recruited from UK universities (N = 807; 427 pre-pandemic cohort, 380 post-pandemic cohort). Results revealed statistically significant differences in mean depression (F (1, 805) = 23.92, p < 0.001), anxiety (F (1, 806) = 20.15, p < 0.001), and stress symptoms (F (1, 805) = 5.24, p = 0.022) scores between cohorts. Scores for the post-pandemic cohort were significantly higher than pre-pandemic, suggesting a worsening of symptom severity. Distributions of student-athletes across categories of symptom severity also worsened for depressive and anxiety symptoms post-pandemic and were skewed towards more severe categories. Symptoms of depression, anxiety, and stress were a concern pre-pandemic. Rates are higher in the post-pandemic cohort, suggesting a worsening of symptoms. These data add to evidence on student-athletes’ symptoms of mental illness by exploring a UK sample and comparing scores pre- and post-pandemic

    Investigating the effects of positive and negative imagery content and ability on cognitive, affective, and behavioural outcomes

    The aim of this thesis was to investigate the effects of positive and negative imagery content and ability on cognitive, affective, and behavioral outcomes. After reviewing the literature in Chapter 1, Chapter 2 examined whether negative image interpretation was influenced by imagery content and skill level. This chapter also investigated the effect of imagery content and skill level on performance, anxiety, and confidence in a golf putting task. Following a similar study design to Chapter 2, Chapter 3 investigated imagery’s effectiveness for regulating psychological and cardiovascular responses to competition stress. This chapter also examined whether mastery imagery ability was associated with psychological and cardiovascular outcomes. Following an experimental investigation of mastery and affect imagery ability, Chapter 4 explored these types of imagery ability as mediators between confidence and appraisals and responses to stress. This chapter also explored negative imagery ability’s role in these models through a negatively worded version of the Sport Imagery Ability Questionnaire. Overall, this thesis makes novel contributions to imagery literature by adding new relationships to the revised applied model of deliberate imagery use, testing a new measure of negative imagery ability, and highlighting mastery imagery ability’s role for protecting against debilitative imagery and regulating stress outcomes

      Evidence from the pathology in cystic fibrosis (CF) and recent results in vitro indicate that HCO3- is required for gel-forming mucins to form the mucus that protects epithelial surfaces. Mucus formation and release is a complex process that begins with an initial intracellular phase of synthesis, packaging and apical granule exocytosis that is followed by an extracellular phase of mucin swelling, transport and discharge into a lumen. Exactly where HCO3- becomes crucial in these processes is unknown, but we observed that in the presence of HCO3-, stimulating dissected segments of native mouse intestine with 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) and prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) induced goblet cell exocytosis followed by normal mucin discharge in wild-type (WT) intestines. CF intestines that inherently lack cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR)-dependent HCO3- secretion also demonstrated apparently normal goblet cell exocytosis, but in contrast, this was not followed by similar mucin discharge. Moreover, we found that even in the presence of HCO3-, when WT intestines were stimulated only with a Ca2+-mediated agonist (carbachol), exocytosis was followed by poor discharge as with CF intestines. However, when the Ca2+-mediated agonist was combined with a cAMP-mediated agonist (isoproterenol (isoprenaline) or vasoactive intestinal peptide) in the presence of HCO3- both normal exocytosis and normal discharge was observed. These results indicate that normal mucus formation requires concurrent activation of a Ca2+-mediated exocytosis of mucin granules and an independent cAMP-mediated, CFTR-dependent, HCO3- secretion that appears to mainly enhance the extracellular phases of mucus excretion

    Characteristics of mental skills interventions in dance:a mixed methods systematic review protocol

    Introduction Dancers are expected to navigate major challenges in their careers that might take a toll on their physical and mental health. To address underlying factors that might increase dancers’ mental and physical health difficulties, research suggests the systematic use of techniques to build mental skills that can reduce risk factors and enhance protective factors against the challenges dancers encounter. However, existing mental skills training interventions in dance present a lack of consistency in design, content and duration, making it difficult to provide evidence-based recommendations. Hence, dance researchers and practitioners would benefit from a mixed methods systematic review (MMSR) of the why, what and how of these interventions. Adopting tools such as the Template for Intervention Description and Replication (TIDieR) can aid this endeavour by describing replicable aspects of interventions, thus offering dance researchers suggestions on how to understand, appraise and report intervention characteristics and processes in dance. Therefore, this protocol outlines a MMSR that will employ TIDieR to identify and assess characteristics of mental skills interventions in dance.Methods and analysis A systematic search will be undertaken in Psycinfo, Medline, Embase, Sportdiscus, Web of Science and the first 30 pages of GoogleScholar. Following the search, two reviewers will independently screen identified studies in Covidence. One reviewer will extract data using the TIDieR framework and the Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool (MMAT) for quality appraisal, while a second reviewer will check a sample of extracted studies for accuracy. A convergent integrated synthesis will be conducted where quantitative and qualitative evidence will be integrated by qualitising the quantitative data into textual descriptions.Ethics and dissemination There is no requirement for ethical approval for this systematic review as no empirical data will be collected. The findings will be disseminated through a peer-reviewed publication in a scientific journal and presentations in several different forums (eg, a dance psychology network, at scientific and applied conferences)

    A novel fluorescent tracer for real-time tracing of clay transport over soil surfaces

    Clay is an important vector for the transport of pollutants in the environment, including nutrients, pesticides and metals; therefore, the fate of many chemicals in soil systems is closely linked to that of clay. Understanding the mechanisms responsible for clay transport has been hampered by the lack of a suitable tracer. Producing a tracer that accurately mimics clay transport is challenging, due to the small size of the particles and their unique physical properties. Here we describe the design and synthesis of a tracer using natural clay particles as a foundation, exploiting the natural ability of clay to sorb molecules to coat the clay with a thin layer of fluorophore. Application of the tracer has been demonstrated through the collection of real-time images of the tracer moving over the surface of a soil box during a rainfall event. These images allow, for the first time, clay to be tracked spatially and temporally without need to remove soil for analysis, thus resulting in minimal experimental artefacts. Custom written software has been used to extract high resolution data describing tracer movement and extent throughout the experiment

    The Experiences of Homeless Youth When Using Strengths Profiling to Identify Their Character Strengths

    Individuals, particularly those considered “hard-to-reach,” often engage well with assessment tools that involve active dialogue and the co-construction of knowledge. Strengths profiling is one such tool that enables a person-centered and autonomy supportive approach to the identification of character strengths. Strength profiling is an adaptation of performance profiling used in sport psychology, which has not yet been utilized in broader psychological research or clinical practice. Supporting an individual by raising awareness of their personal character strengths is an effective and growing mechanism for promoting psychological well-being. Strengths profiling involves several stages of exploring, defining, and assessing character strengths, leading to the identification of signature strengths and goals for future development. Informed by personal construct theory, the present study explored the experiences of homeless young people living in sheltered accommodation (N = 116), when using strengths profiling at the start and end of a 10-week, strengths-based intervention. Mixed-method data was obtained from the strengths profiles, questionnaires measuring resilience, selfworth, and well-being, and diary entries. Findings revealed a rich array of character strength terminology and individual meanings. Participants found strengths profiling to be highly engaging, particularly due to their active role in strength identification, which prompted interesting and meaningful reflections on character strengths that were pertinent to them. Participants felt their signature strengths were vital protective factors within their lives and strengths profiles were correlated with resilience, self-worth, and well-being. Character strengths and resilience were also significantly and meaningfully improved pre/post-intervention, providing support for the use of strengths profiling as a tool for monitoring change in character strength perceptions. Overall, this study demonstrates the utility and versatility of strengths profiling as a new method in the discipline of positive psychology and strengths-based research and applied practice
