    Reassessing the Source of Long-Period Comets

    We present numerical simulations to model the production of observable long-period comets (LPCs) from the Oort Cloud, a vast reservoir of icy bodies surrounding the Sun. We show that inner Oort Cloud objects can penetrate Jupiter's orbit via a largely unexplored dynamical pathway, and they are an important, if not the dominant, source of known LPCs. We use this LPC production to place observationally motivated constraints on the population and mass of the inner Oort Cloud, which are consistent with giant planet formation theory. These constraints indicate that only one comet shower producing late Eocene bombardment levels has likely occurred since the Cambrian Explosion, making these phenomena an improbable cause of additional extinction events.Comment: Originally published in Science (9/4/09), 30 pages, 9 figures, main article and online material combine

    The Formation of the Oort Cloud in Open Cluster Environments

    We study the influence of an open cluster environment on the formation and current structure of the Oort cloud. To do this, we have run 19 different simulations of the formation of the Oort Cloud for 4.5 Gyrs. In each simulation, the solar system spends its first 100 Myrs in a different open cluster environment before transitioning to its current field environment. We find that, compared to forming in the field environment, the inner Oort Cloud is preferentially loaded with comets while the Sun resides in the open cluster and that most of this material remains locked in the interior of the cloud for the next 4.4 Gyrs. In addition, the outer Oort Cloud trapping efficiencies we observe in our simulations are lower than previous formation models by about a factor of 2, possibly implying an even more massive early planetesimal disk. Furthermore, some of our simulations reproduce the orbits of observed extended scattered disk objects, which may serve as an observational constraint on the Sun's early environment. Depending on the particular open cluster environment, the properties of the inner Oort Cloud and extended scattered disk can vary widely.     Decreasing Computing Time with Symplectic Correctors in Adaptive Timestepping Routines

    It has previously been shown that varying the numerical timestep during a symplectic orbital integration leads to a random walk in energy and angular momentum, destroying the phase space-conserving property of symplectic integrators. Here we show that when altering the timestep symplectic correctors can be used to reduce this error to a negligible level. Furthermore, these correctors can also be employed to avoid a large error introduction when changing the Hamiltonian's partitioning. We have constructed a numerical integrator using this technique that is nearly as accurate as widely used fixed-step routines. In addition, our algorithm is drastically faster for integrations of highly eccentricitic, large semimajor axis orbits, such as those found in the Oort Cloud.Comment: Accepted to AJ, 29 pages, 8 figure

    DOES IN VIVO LIGAMENT FORCE PASS THROUGH LIGAMENT INSERTIONS?: A ROBOTIC STUDY

    INTRODUCTION Post traumatic osteoarthritis (PTOA) is a subset of osteoarthritis that arises after traumatic joint injury. Approximately half of patients suffering from anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries have been shown to progress towards PTOA within fifteen years[1]. One of the areas of research for PTOA is examining the biomechanical changes following an ACL injury. A recent study[2] examined the effects of ACL transection (ACLx) in an ovine model. In vivo stifle joint motions were recorded, and recreated in vitro using a novel robotic testing platform. Joint and tissue loads were simultaneously recorded during reproduction of in vivo joint motion[2]. This novel approach was shown to be able to reproduce in vivo motions within less than 0.1Ā° and 0.1mm[2]. Ā  The main objective of the present study was to determine if in vivo ligament forces, obtained using the principle of superposition, pass through respective ligament insertional footprints. This study evaluated the accuracy of the measured ligament forces, as they should pass through their bony insertions. This accuracy was examined for medial and lateral collateral ligaments (MCL and LCL), and posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) in ACLx sheep. Ā  METHODS Stifle joints from N=4 sheep that had been previously examined in ACLx kinematics studies were digitized using a coordinate measuring machine. The ligament insertional areas were thoroughly recreated in 3D space, along with the spatial position of the kinematic measurement device. Anatomic coordinate systems were defined on the femur and the tibia. These data were then exported to MATLAB scripts for further analysis. The ligament insertional areas were approximated as planes using least squares regression technique. The intersection of the ligament force vectors with the plane approximations were then calculated. The direction of a ligament force was deemed accurate if the distance between the calculated intersection and footprint centroid was within a determined threshold. A preliminary threshold was calculated as the maximum distance between the centroid and measured points of the footprint. RESULTS Analysis of the data indicated that the technique increases in accuracy for high ligament loads (Figure 1). That is to say as the ligament loads increase, the intersection-centroid distance is reduced. For lower ligament loads (mainly within the ā€œtoeā€ region of the ligament force-displacement behavior), however, the method requires further refinement. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS This study indicated that the method requires further refinement based on the limitations induced currently. Preliminary data shows that accuracy increases as ligament load magnitudes increase as well. Finding the intersections on plane approximations of the insertional footprints can lead to very large error when the planes approach a parallel state. In these states, a small angular change in force direction can cause a very large change in intersection-centroid distance. Each ligament and its insertions have different functions and geometries, and as such require separate limitations. Future studies would require modifications to the analysis method to account for the limitations involved with the current method

    Validation of the Social Security Death Index (SSDI): An Important Readily-Available Outcomes Database for Researchers

    Study Objective: To determine the accuracy of the online Social Security Death Index (SSDI) for determining death outcomes. Methods: We selected 30 patients who were determined to be dead and 90 patients thought to be alive after an ED visit as determined by a web-based searched of the SSDI. For those thought to be dead we requested death certificates. We then had a research coordinator blinded to the results of the SSDI search, complete direct follow-up by contacting the patients, family or primary care physicians to determine vital status. To determine the sensitivity and specificity of the SSDI for death at six months in this cohort, we used direct follow-up as the criterion reference and calculated 95% confidence intervals. Results: Direct follow-up was completed for 90% (108 of 120) of the patients. For those patients 20 were determined to be dead and 88 alive. The dead were more likely to be male (57%) and older [(mean age 83.9 (95% CI 79.1 ā€“ 88.7) vs. 60.9 (95% CI 56.4 ā€“ 65.4) for those alive]. The sensitivity of the SSDI for those with completed direct follow-up was 100% (95% CI 91 -100%) with specificity of 100% (95% CI 98-100%). Of the 12 patients who were not able to be contacted through direct follow-up, the SSDI indicated that 10 were dead and two were alive. Conclusions: SSDI is an accurate measure of death outcomes and appears to have the advantage of finding deaths among patients lost to follow-up
