System relations between word-building types of verbs with the meaning of negative consequences of action
The article is devoted to the description of the system relations between word-building types corresponding to the aktionsart with the meaning of negative consequences of action. This is a group of prefixal and confixal verbs where the negative effects of an action are caused by excessive intensity or duration of action. The study of aktionsart with the meaning of negative consequences of action is of great interest first of all for they express the complex of aspectual meanings and it is essential to identify what creates such a complex semantics. Secondly, the semantics of negative consequences itself should be specified. Multiplicity of the mentioned aktionsarts confirms that semantics of negative consequences of action is relevant for the Russian language and for the whole Russian linguistic worldview. It is noteworthy to determine possible system relations arising between the verbs of the mentioned aktionsarts. The purpose of the article is to identify possible system relations arising between verbs of the specified manners of action. While the study methods of observation, description, functional and semantic analysis, component analysis were used. As a material for the study, examples from works by Russian writers selected from the Russian National Corpus (S.A. Alexievich. V.P. Astafyev, V.V. Bykov. F.M. Dostoyevsky, A.I. Kuprin, O.A. Slavnikova, V.I. Shukshin) were used. The conducted research elicited possible relations of word-building synonymy between different word-building types when identical word-building meanings are expressed by derivatives with different affixes and with a common derivative base. This type of word-formative synonymy is revealed in the framework of total aktionsart (with prefixes iz- and vy-) and excessive-multiple aktionsart (with confixes iz-...-sya and vy-...-sya). Amid the various word-formative types with the same prefix the relationships of enantiosemy (verbs with the prefixes ob-, za-, na-) were revealed as well. Opposite meanings of increase and diminution of action intensity arise in case the prefix is combined with different groups of motivating verbs. The reasons of this phenomenon are established
Spectral and Wavefront Error Performance of WFIRST-AFTA Bandpass Filter Coating Prototypes
The Cycle 5 design baseline for the Wide-Field Infrared Survey Telescope Astrophysics Focused Telescope Assets (WFIRST/AFTA) instrument includes a single wide-field channel (WFC) instrument for both imaging and slit-less spectroscopy. The only routinely moving part during scientific observations for this wide-field channel is the element wheel (EW) assembly. This filter-wheel assembly will have 8 positions that will be populated with 6 bandpass filters, a blank position, and a Grism that will consist of a three-element assembly to disperse the full field with an undeviated central wavelength for galaxy redshift surveys. All filter elements in the EW assembly will be made out of fused silica substrates (110 mm diameter) that will have the appropriate bandpass coatings according to the filter designations (Z087, Y106, J129, H158, F184, W149 and Grism). This paper presents and discusses the performance (including spectral transmission and reflected/transmitted wavefront error measurements) of a subset of bandpass filter coating prototypes that are based on the WFC instrument filter compliment. The bandpass coating prototypes that are tested in this effort correspond to the Z087, W149, and Grism filter elements. These filter coatings have been procured from three different vendors to assess the most challenging aspects in terms of the in-band throughput, out of band rejection (including the cut-on and cutoff slopes), and the impact the wavefront error distortions of these filter coatings will have on the imaging performance of the wide-field channel in the WFIRST/AFTA observatory
A Fast and Reliable Method for Simultaneous Waveform, Amplitude and Latency Estimation of Single-Trial EEG/MEG Data
The amplitude and latency of single-trial EEG/MEG signals may provide valuable information concerning human brain functioning. In this article we propose a new method to reliably estimate single-trial amplitude and latency of EEG/MEG signals. The advantages of the method are fourfold. First, no a-priori specified template function is required. Second, the method allows for multiple signals that may vary independently in amplitude and/or latency. Third, the method is less sensitive to noise as it models data with a parsimonious set of basis functions. Finally, the method is very fast since it is based on an iterative linear least squares algorithm. A simulation study shows that the method yields reliable estimates under different levels of latency variation and signal-to-noise ratioÕs. Furthermore, it shows that the existence of multiple signals can be correctly determined. An application to empirical data from a choice reaction time study indicates that the method describes these data accurately
Bottleneck effect in three-dimensional turbulence simulations
At numerical resolutions around and above, three-dimensional energy
spectra from turbulence simulations begin to show noticeably shallower spectra
than near the dissipation wavenumber (`bottleneck effect'). This
effect is shown to be significantly weaker in one-dimensional spectra such as
those obtained in wind tunnel turbulence. The difference can be understood in
terms of the transformation between one-dimensional and three-dimensional
energy spectra under the assumption that the turbulent velocity field is
isotropic. Transversal and longitudinal energy spectra are similar and can both
accurately be computed from the full three-dimensional spectra. Second-order
structure functions are less susceptible to the bottleneck effect and may be
better suited for inferring the scaling exponent from numerical simulation
data.Comment: 8 pages, 6 figure
All-electric-spin control in interference single electron transistors
Single particle interference lies at the heart of quantum mechanics. The
archetypal double-slit experiment has been repeated with electrons in vacuum up
to the more massive molecules. Mesoscopic rings threaded by a magnetic
flux provide the solid-state analogous. Intra-molecular interference has been
recently discussed in molecular junctions. Here we propose to exploit
interference to achieve all-electrical control of a single electron spin in
quantum dots, a highly desirable property for spintronics and spin-qubit
applications. The device consists of an interference single electron transistor
(ISET), where destructive interference between orbitally degenerate electronic
states produces current blocking at specific bias voltages. We show that in the
presence of parallel polarized ferromagnetic leads the interplay between
interference and the exchange coupling on the system generates an effective
energy renormalization yielding different blocking biases for majority and
minority spins. Hence, by tuning the bias voltage full control over the spin of
the trapped electron is achieved.Comment: 9 pages, 5 figure
Localization and Androgen Regulation of Metastasis-Associated Protein 1 in Mouse Epididymis
BACKGROUND: Metastasis-associated protein 1 (MTA1), the founding member of the MTA family of genes, can modulate transcription by influencing the status of chromatin remodeling. Despite its strong correlation with the metastatic potential of cancer cells, MTA1 can also regulate crucial cellular pathways by modifying the acetylation status. We have previously reported the presence of MTA1/MTA1 in human and mouse testes, providing the evidence for its involvement in the regulation of testicular function during murine spermatogenesis. The objective of present study was to further assess the localization of MTA1 in mouse epididymis on both transcriptional and translational level, and then to explore whether MTA1 expression is regulated by androgens and postnatal epididymal development. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Mice were deprived of circulating androgen by bilaterally castration and were then supplemented with exogenous testosterone propionate for one week. MTA1 was immunolocalized in the epithelium of the entire epididymis with the maximal expression in the nuclei of principal cells and of clear cells in proximal region. Its expression decreased gradually after castration, whereas testosterone treatment could restore the expression, indicating that the expression of this gene is dependent on androgen. During postnatal development, the protein expression in the epididymis began to appear from day 7 to day 14, increased dramatically from postnatal day 28, and peaked at adulthood onwards, coinciding with both the well differentiated status of epididymis and the mature levels of circulating androgens. This region- and cell-specific pattern was also conservative in normal human epididymis. CONCLUSIONS: Our data suggest that the expression of MTA1 protein could be regulated by androgen pathway and its expression level is closely associated with the postnatal development of the epididymis, giving rise to the possibility that this gene plays a potential role in sperm maturation and fertility
Team Learning: the Missing Construct from a Cross-Cultural Examination of Higher Education?
Team learning should be an important construct in organizational management research because team learning can enhance organizational learning and overall performance. However, there is limited understanding of how team learning works in different cultural contexts. Using an international comparative research approach, we developed a framework of antecedents and outcomes in the higher education context and tested it with samples from the UK and Vietnam. The results show that a common framework is applicable in the two different contexts, subject to slight modifications. However, this study does not find that team learning (measured via the proxy of “attitude towards team learning”) exhibits any statistically significant relationship as a predictor of the proposed outcomes. Other findings from this study on educational contexts are important not only to scholars in this field, but also for practicing managers, particularly those who study and operate in the extensive global market
