    Study of the damping characteristics of general aviation aircraft panels and development of computer programs to calculate the effectiveness of interior noise control treatment, part 1

    Tests were carried out on 20 inch x 20 inch panels at different test conditions using free-free panels, clamped panels, and panels as installed in the KU-FRL acoustic test facility. Tests with free-free panels verified the basic equipment set-up and test procedure. They also provided a basis for comparison. The results indicate that the effect of installed panels is to increase the damping ratio at the same frequency. However, a direct comparison is not possible, as the fundamental frequency of a free-free panel differs from the resonance frequency of the panel when installed. The damping values of panels installed in the test facility are closer to the damping values obtained with fixed-fixed panels. Effects of damping tape, stiffeners, and bonded and riveted edged conditions were also investigated. Progress in the development of a simple interior noise level control program is reported

    Search for Higgs Bosons Decay H→γγH\to \gamma\gamma Using Vector Boson Fusion

    The sensitivity of the ATLAS experiment to low mass SM Higgs produced via Vector Boson Fusion mechanism with H→γγH\to \gamma\gamma is invest igated. A cut based event selection has been chosen to optimize the expected signal significance with this decay mode. A signal significance of 2. 2σ \sigma may be achieved for M_H=130 \gev with 30 fb−1^{-1} of accumulated luminosity

    Ability of CEA blood levels to reflect tumour burden: a study in a human xenograft model.

    The relationship of serum carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) levels to tumour size and antigen content was studied in artificially immune-deprived mice bearing human colonic, breast and lung tumour xenografts. Size was measured as in vivo volume and tumour weight at post-mortem. A multiple implant technique combined with early harvest was used to minimize centrilobular tumour necrosis. CEA was extracted from resected tumours with perchloric acid. A radioimmunoassay using chemical precipitation was used to estimate CEA in blood samples. A correlation was found between CEA blood levels and tumour size in half the tumour lines, in contrast to a recent report (Lewis & Keep, 1981). The CEA content was found to be constant for one tumour line but not another. The possibility that central necrosis in xenograft tumours may account for the discrepancies is discussed. There may be serious limitations for the use of xenograft tumour models for studying the biology of CEA

    Study of noise reduction characteristics of double-wall panels

    The noise reduction characteristics of general aviation type, flat, double-wall structures were investigated. The experimental study was carried out on 20-by-20 inch panels with an exposed area of 18 by 18 inches. A frequency range from 20 to 5000 Hz was covered. The experimental results, in general, follow the expected trends. At low frequencies the double-wall structures are no better than the single-wall structures. However, for depths normally used in the general aviation industry, the double-wall panels are very attractive. The graphite-spoxy skin panels have higher noise reduction at very low frequencies ( 100 Hz) than the Kevlar skin panels. But the aluminum panels have higher noise reduction in the high frequency region, due to their greater mass. Use of fiberglass insulation is not effective in the low frequency region, and at times it is even negative. But the insulation is effective in the high-frequency region. The theoretical model for predicting the transmission loss of these multilayered panels is also discussed

    Prospects for Higgs Searches via VBF at the LHC with the ATLAS Detector

    We report on the potential for the discovery of a Standard Model Higgs boson with the vector boson fusion mechanism in the mass range 115 with the ATLAS experiment at the LHC. Feasibility studies at hadron level followed by a fast detector simulation have been performed for H\to W^{(*)}W^{(*)}\to l^+l^-\sla{p_T}, H→γγH\to\gamma\gamma and H→ZZ→l+l−qqˉH\to ZZ\to l^+l^-q\bar{q}. The results obtained show a large discovery potential in the range 115.     Fresh-Water Kill Of Oysters (Crassostrea virginica) In James River, Virginia, 1958

    Fresh water invaded the upper half of James River seed area in winter and spring of 1958. Many oysters died between 1 May and 15 ·June. On some grounds, salinities did not become suitable until l July when temperature had reached 23°c. Death rates of native oysters were as high as 90 percent. Oysters exposed to fresh water from midwinter were conditioned to a low physiological state as evidenced by absence of heart beat, ciliary motion and mantle sensitivity when first opened. Oysters held in trays at one extremity of the seed area withstood fresh-water conditions similarly to oysters on natural bottom--in accordance with their previous history of exposure. Oysters in pans of fresh.well water at the Laboratory endured unsuitable conditions for similar periods as those in James River. Once broken, the conditioned state could not be regained at temperatures favoring activity. Apparently slow conditioning of oysters at low salinities and at low temperatures induces a state of narcosis which permits conservation of food supply and evasion of effects of temperature rises. This lasts only as long as closure is continuously enforced by fresh water or other factors
