    Modelling and Experimental Validation of a VNT Turbocharger for Improving Performances of a Marine Diesel Generator Engine

    This paper presents modelling and experimental validation for improving the performances of a marine diesel generator engine. Based on the diesel engine theory, the laws of conservation of energy, and the principle of movement of flow through turbocharger nozzle, a mathematical model of a real turbocharged engine was built, concentrating on the mathematic model of flow through nozzles. This model is simulated by Matlab/Simulink program, the results of simulation showed the relationships between the engine and the turbocharger, the turbine and the compressor, and between the nozzles and the turbocharger. The experiments were carried out to validate this model, the errors between the simulation and measure were acceptable. The measure and simulation results also determined that at the low load conditions (≀50% load) engine performances can be improved by adjusting nozzle opening degree (from fully opening to 90% and 80% opening)

    A DOUBLE-SHRINK AUTOENCODER FOR NETWORK ANOMALY DETECTION

    The rapid development of the Internet and the wide spread of its applications has affected many aspects of our life. However, this development also makes the cyberspace more vulnerable to various attacks. Thus, detecting and preventing these attacks are crucial for the next development of the Internet and its services. Recently, machine learning methods have been widely adopted in detecting network attacks. Among many machine learning methods, AutoEncoders (AEs) are known as the state-of-the-art techniques for network anomaly detection. Although, AEs have been successfully applied to detect many types of attacks, it is often unable to detect some difficult attacks that attempt to mimic the normal network traffic. In order to handle this issue, we propose a new model based on AutoEncoder called Double-Shrink AutoEncoder (DSAE). DSAE put more shrinkage on the normal data in the middle hidden layer. This helps to pull out some anomalies that are very similar to normal data. DSAE are evaluated on six well-known network attacks datasets. The experimental results show that our model performs competitively to the state-of-the-art model, and often out-performs this model on the attacks group that is difficult for the previous methods

    Relationship between temperature, temperature-humidity index and amount of food intake of Sheep

    This study aimed to identify the relationship between temperature, temperature-humidity index (THI), and the amount of dry matter food intake (DMI) by sheep. Twelve Phan Rang (Ninh Thuan province) sheep belonging to three age groups of 6, 9, and 12 months (4 heads of each age group) raised in Thua Thien Hue province were fed with natural grass for two seasons: hot season (April-August) and cold season (November-February). Daily temperature, humidity, and food intake were recorded. The results of the study revealed that temperature and THI were closely correlated (P<0.05) with the amount of food intake by sheep. When the temperature was in the range of 29.5°C to 32.5°C and increased by 1ο C, the DMI of sheep decreased by 14.7 g/BW/day. When the value of THI was more than 28.5 and rose by 1°C, the DMI of sheep decreased by 16.2 g/BW/day

    The lasting effects of innovation on firm profitability: panel evidence from a transitional economy

    This study is the first to study the lasting effects of innovation on firm profitability in Vietnam. Using a unique panel dataset for the period 2005–2015, our results show that innovators achieve higher profit in comparison with non-innovating firms. The positive effects of innovation on firm profitability are observed not only in the short term but also in the longer term. The benefits of innovation for firm profitability can be seen in higher export probability, better productivity, better access to formal credit, and the ability to secure government support, but only after innovation

    The fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) retrofitting technique has been increasingly created to enhance the capacity of the existing concrete members. In this study, the shear contribution of the external FRP strengthening system in the reinforced concrete (RC) beams is estimated by the semi-empirical models available in the open literatures and guidelines. Number of beams monitored in the previous studies are first considered to assess the reliability of the models. Afterwards, the investigation of influential factors such as the beam configurations, the strengthening characteristics and the material properties are implemented. With high accuracy and low coefficient of variation, the model proposed in a previous study of the authors gains the mostly considerable estimation for the shear resisting strength of FRP strengthening system compared to the accessible data base from the experiments. In addition, the critical properties of the materials associating with the retrofitting systems for the strengthened beams are investigated to obtain the acquired shear performance

    Calculation of turbulent diffusion jets under effects of gravity and moving surrounding air

    The basis theory for the turbulent diffusion of jet and flame has been presented previously [1, 2]. But that one applies only in quiet surrounding air with the effects of buoyancy neglected. In the present paper, the theory is developed further by establishing an integral model for a jet in more general conditions with variable inclined angles, under effects of gravity and surrounding air velocity in any direction compared to the jet axis. The system of equations is closed by turbulence k-E model and is solved by 4th order Runge-Kutta method. In the first stage, the model is applied to predict the velocity field, the concentration field and with development of a 0.3 m diameter jet
