    Signatures of impact-driven atmospheric loss in large ensembles of exoplanets

    The results of large-scale exoplanet transit surveys indicate that the distribution of small planet radii is likely sculpted by atmospheric loss. Several possible physical mechanisms exist for this loss of primordial atmospheres, each of which produces a different set of observational signatures. In this study, we investigate the impact-driven mode of atmosphere loss via N-body simulations. We compare the results from giant impacts, at a demographic level, to results from another commonly-invoked method of atmosphere loss: photoevaporation. Applying two different loss prescriptions to the same sets of planets, we then examine the resulting distributions of planets with retained primordial atmospheres. As a result of this comparison, we identify two new pathways toward discerning the dominant atmospheric loss mechanism at work. Both of these pathways involve using transit multiplicity as a diagnostic, in examining the results of follow-up atmospheric and radial velocity surveys.Comment: 17 pages, 10 figures, Submitted to Ap

    Searching for Inflow Towards Massive Starless Clump Candidates Identified in the Bolocam Galactic Plane Survey

    Recent Galactic plane surveys of dust continuum emission at long wavelengths have identified a population of dense, massive clumps with no evidence for on-going star formation. These massive starless clump candidates are excellent sites to search for the initial phases of massive star formation before the feedback from massive star formation effects the clump. In this study, we search for the spectroscopic signature of inflowing gas toward starless clumps, some of which are massive enough to form a massive star. We observed 101 starless clump candidates identified in the Bolocam Galactic Plane Survey (BGPS) in HCO+ J = 1-0 using the 12m Arizona Radio Observatory telescope. We find a small blue excess of E = (Nblue - Nred)/Ntotal = 0.03 for the complete survey. We identified 6 clumps that are good candidates for inflow motion and used a radiative transfer model to calculate mass inflow rates that range from 500 - 2000 M /Myr. If the observed line profiles are indeed due to large-scale inflow motions, then these clumps will typically double their mass on a free fall time. Our survey finds that massive BGPS starless clump candidates with inflow signatures in HCO+ J = 1-0 are rare throughout our Galaxy.Comment: 14 pages, 9 figure

    Association of serum alpha-1 antitrypsin level with the severity of COPD

    Background: Alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency (AATD) is a hereditary disorder linked to early onset COPD, notably the emphysema variety, but often goes undetected. Low serum AAT levels may impact lung function and correlate with COPD severity. The aim of the study was to detect possible associations of serum AAT level with the severity of COPD patients on the basis of post bronchodilator FEV1 in Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU). Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted at the Department of Respiratory Medicine, BSMMU, Dhaka, from October 2022 to September 2023. Adult patients (≥18 years) of both genders diagnosed with COPD based on spirometry were included. COPD was defined per GOLD guidelines, with a post-bronchodilator FEV1/FVC ratio <70%. Severity was categorized based on post-bronchodilator FEV1% predicted. Association between serum AAT level and COPD severity was analyzed using SPSS version 26, with significance set at p <0.05. Results: The study involved 80 COPD patients, with 1.25% showing low serum AAT levels and 98.75% normal. No significant differences in age, sex, or smoking status were observed among severity groups. Mean serum AAT levels varied across severity groups but were not statistically significant (p=0.377). Smoking was prevalent (66.3%), with common comorbidities like hypertension (26.3%), IHD (16.3%), and diabetes mellitus (15.0%). Shortness of breath (95.0%) and cough (92.5%) were common symptoms, with most patients having moderate disease severity (42.5%). Conclusions: The study indicates a weak association between serum AAT levels and COPD severity, with only 1.25% of 80 patients exhibiting low AAT levels

    Stellar and Planetary Parameters for K2's Late-type Dwarf Systems from C1 to C5

    The NASA K2 mission uses photometry to find planets transiting stars of various types. M dwarfs are of high interest since they host more short-period planets than any other type of main-sequence star and transiting planets around M dwarfs have deeper transits compared to other main-sequence stars. In this paper, we present stellar parameters from K and M dwarfs hosting transiting planet candidates discovered by our team. Using the SOFI spectrograph on the European Southern Observatory's New Technology Telescope, we obtained R ≈ 1000 J-, H-, and K-band (0.95–2.52 μm) spectra of 34 late-type K2 planet and candidate planet host systems and 12 bright K4–M5 dwarfs with interferometrically measured radii and effective temperatures. Out of our 34 late-type K2 targets, we identify 27 of these stars as M dwarfs. We measure equivalent widths of spectral features, derive calibration relations using stars with interferometric measurements, and estimate stellar radii, effective temperatures, masses, and luminosities for the K2 planet hosts. Our calibrations provide radii and temperatures with median uncertainties of 0.059 R⊙ (16.09%) and 160 K (4.33%), respectively. We then reassess the radii and equilibrium temperatures of known and candidate planets based on our spectroscopically derived stellar parameters. Since a planet's radius and equilibrium temperature depend on the parameters of its host star, our study provides more precise planetary parameters for planets and candidates orbiting late-type stars observed with K2. We find a median planet radius and an equilibrium temperature of approximately 3 R⊕ and 500 K, respectively, with several systems (K2-18b and K2-72e) receiving near-Earth-like levels of incident irradiation

    On the Malaysian ringgit exchange rate determination and recent depreciation

    The Ringgit (MYR) has recently, since October 2015, suffered a large decline against most world currencies. In this study, based on the theory of exchange rate determination, we tested for a long run relationship between both MYRUSD and MYRGBP against the differential interest rate, differential money supply, price of world crude oil and Goods and Services Tax (GST, as dummy variable). We ran an Autoregressive Distributive Lag (ARDL) model on monthly data from January 2010 to January 2017. We found a negative long run relationship between MYRGBP and differential money supply and a positive long run relationship against the world crude oil price. As the Ringgit (MYR) supply increased relative to the British Pound, the Ringgit depreciated, and as the crude oil price strengthened, the Ringgit appreciated. A high dependency of the Ringgit on world crude oil implies a bad sign. In our view, Malaysia needs to work harder to attract foreign direct investment to maintain the value of the Ringgit at a healthy level

    Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to investigate the effectiveness of Islamic banks’ corporate social responsibility (CSR) using data collected from stakeholders in Malaysia. While Islamic scholars have developed the Islamic CSR from the Qur’anic verses, the Sunnah of the Prophet (SAW) and from the western ideologies, the focus of this paper is to assess the effectiveness of the developed Islamic CSR practices. Design/methodology/approach – Quantitative research design was adopted for this study. Exploratory factor analysis, confirmatory factor analysis, and other analyses are performed on the data collected from 193 stakeholders in Malaysia. Findings – Based on the data collected and analyzed, the results show that stakeholders view the Malaysian Islamic banks’ CSRs as effective. Research limitations/implications – This study investigates the effectiveness of Malaysian Islamic banks’ CSR based on the survey data collected. However, future studies could explore this in greater depth using mixed methods. Practical implications – The research findings have great implications for researchers. Since this study is among the few research studies that investigate the effectiveness of Islamic CSR, the researchers have paved ways for further investigation in this area. In addition, the study encourages the Malaysian Islamic banks and other Islamic financial institutions to contribute more to the society. Originality/value – The study examines the effectiveness of Islamic banks’ CSR and contributes to the growing discussions on the Islamic CSR. The study has opened up this area for further investigations by other researcher
