    Recurrent paratesticular giant liposarcoma: A case report and literature review

    BackgroundPrimary paratesticular liposarcoma is rarely diagnosed among urinary tumors. In this study, through the retrospective analysis of clinical data and literature review, a case of recurrent paratesticular liposarcoma with lymph node metastasis after radical resection has been reported to explore novel strategies for the diagnosis, treatment and prognosis of this rare disease.Case summaryThe present case involved a patient who was misdiagnosed as a left inguinal hernia for the first time two years ago, but was later diagnosed as mixed liposarcoma by using postoperative pathology. Currently, he is readmitted to the hospital with a recurrence of the left scrotal mass for more than 1 year. Combined with the patient's past medical history, we performed radical resection of the left inguinal and scrotal tumors and lymphadenectomy of left femoral vein. The postoperative pathology indicated that well-differentiated liposarcoma was accompanied by mucinous liposarcoma (about 20%), and lymph node metastasis of left femoral vein both of which occurred at the same time. After the operation, we recommended the patient to receive further radiation therapy, but the patient and his family refused, hence we followed up the patient closely for a long time. During the recent follow-up, the patient reported no complaints of discomfort, and no recurrence of mass in the left scrotum and groin area.ConclusionAfter conducting extensive review of literature, we conclude that radical resection remains the key to treat primary paratesticular liposarcoma, while the significance of the lymph node metastasis is still unclear. The potential effects of postoperative adjuvant therapy depends on the pathological type, and hence close follow-up observation is essential

    Genomic Insights Into the Admixture History of Mongolic- and Tungusic-Speaking Populations From Southwestern East Asia

    As a major part of the modern Trans-Eurasian or Altaic language family, most of the Mongolic and Tungusic languages were mainly spoken in northern China, Mongolia, and southern Siberia, but some were also found in southern China. Previous genetic surveys only focused on the dissection of genetic structure of northern Altaic-speaking populations; however, the ancestral origin and genomic diversification of Mongolic and Tungusic–speaking populations from southwestern East Asia remain poorly understood because of the paucity of high-density sampling and genome-wide data. Here, we generated genome-wide data at nearly 700,000 single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in 26 Mongolians and 55 Manchus collected from Guizhou province in southwestern China. We applied principal component analysis (PCA), ADMIXTURE, f statistics, qpWave/qpAdm analysis, qpGraph, TreeMix, Fst, and ALDER to infer the fine-scale population genetic structure and admixture history. We found significant genetic differentiation between northern and southern Mongolic and Tungusic speakers, as one specific genetic cline of Manchu and Mongolian was identified in Guizhou province. Further results from ADMIXTURE and f statistics showed that the studied Guizhou Mongolians and Manchus had a strong genetic affinity with southern East Asians, especially for inland southern East Asians. The qpAdm-based estimates of ancestry admixture proportion demonstrated that Guizhou Mongolians and Manchus people could be modeled as the admixtures of one northern ancestry related to northern Tungusic/Mongolic speakers or Yellow River farmers and one southern ancestry associated with Austronesian, Tai-Kadai, and Austroasiatic speakers. The qpGraph-based phylogeny and neighbor-joining tree further confirmed that Guizhou Manchus and Mongolians derived approximately half of the ancestry from their northern ancestors and the other half from southern Indigenous East Asians. The estimated admixture time ranged from 600 to 1,000 years ago, which further confirmed the admixture events were mediated via the Mongolians Empire expansion during the formation of the Yuan dynasty

    Traditional beliefs and practices in the postpartum period in Fujian Province, China: a qualitative study

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p><it>Zuo yuezi </it>is the month postpartum in China associated with a variety of traditional beliefs and practices. We explored the current status of <it>zuo yuezi </it>from social, cultural and western medical perspectives.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>We interviewed family members (36) and health workers (8) in Fujian Province, selecting one rural and one rapidly developing urban county. We asked about their traditional beliefs and their behaviour postpartum. We used a framework approach to identify main themes. We categorised reported behaviour against their probable effects on health, drawing on Western standards.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Respondents reported that <it>zuo yuezi </it>was commonly practiced in urban and rural families to help the mother regain her strength and protect her future health. <it>Zuo yuezi </it>included: dietary precautions, such as eating more food and avoiding cold food; behavioural precautions, such as staying inside the home, avoiding housework and limiting visitors; hygiene precautions, such as restricting bathing and dental hygiene; and practices associated with infant feeding, including supplementary feeding and giving honeysuckle herb to the infant. Respondents reported that the main reasons for adhering to these practices were respect for tradition, and following the advice of elders. Categorised against Western medical standards, several <it>zuo yuezi </it>practices are beneficial, including eating more, eating protein rich food, avoiding housework, and daily vulval and perineal hygiene. A few are potentially harmful, including giving honeysuckle herb, and avoiding dental hygiene. Some women reported giving infants supplementary feeds, although <it>zuo yuezi </it>emphasises breast feeding.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p><it>Zuo yuezi </it>is an important ritual in Fujian. In medical terms, most practices are beneficial, and could be used by health staff to promote health in this period. Further research on reported potentially harmful practices, such as supplements to breast feeding, is needed.</p

    Challenges in QCD matter physics - The Compressed Baryonic Matter experiment at FAIR

    Substantial experimental and theoretical efforts worldwide are devoted to explore the phase diagram of strongly interacting matter. At LHC and top RHIC energies, QCD matter is studied at very high temperatures and nearly vanishing net-baryon densities. There is evidence that a Quark-Gluon-Plasma (QGP) was created at experiments at RHIC and LHC. The transition from the QGP back to the hadron gas is found to be a smooth cross over. For larger net-baryon densities and lower temperatures, it is expected that the QCD phase diagram exhibits a rich structure, such as a first-order phase transition between hadronic and partonic matter which terminates in a critical point, or exotic phases like quarkyonic matter. The discovery of these landmarks would be a breakthrough in our understanding of the strong interaction and is therefore in the focus of various high-energy heavy-ion research programs. The Compressed Baryonic Matter (CBM) experiment at FAIR will play a unique role in the exploration of the QCD phase diagram in the region of high net-baryon densities, because it is designed to run at unprecedented interaction rates. High-rate operation is the key prerequisite for high-precision measurements of multi-differential observables and of rare diagnostic probes which are sensitive to the dense phase of the nuclear fireball. The goal of the CBM experiment at SIS100 (sqrt(s_NN) = 2.7 - 4.9 GeV) is to discover fundamental properties of QCD matter: the phase structure at large baryon-chemical potentials (mu_B > 500 MeV), effects of chiral symmetry, and the equation-of-state at high density as it is expected to occur in the core of neutron stars. In this article, we review the motivation for and the physics programme of CBM, including activities before the start of data taking in 2022, in the context of the worldwide efforts to explore high-density QCD matter.Comment: 15 pages, 11 figures.     Socio-spatial differentiation and residential segregation in the Chinese city based on the 2000 community-level census data: A case study of the inner city of Nanjing

    Socio-spatial differentiation and residential segregation have been studied extensively in numerous cities and have contributed significantly to the understanding of urban spatial and social structures. Analyses of diverse data sets at varied spatial scales have supported the development of theoretical frameworks. However, the majority of Chinese case studies published in recent decades were dominantly based on either non-spatial data or population census data at sub-district (or jiedao in Chinese) level. These analyses have been limited through using low-resolution aggregate data resulting in incomplete or biased findings. This paper aims to examine the fine-scale socio-spatial structure of the inner city of Nanjing using the fifth population census data of 2000 at the lowest spatial scale – community (or juweihui in Chinese) level. Our findings reveal that the policies of the socialist era and the initial outcomes of the introduction of a free market, particularly with regard to the creation of new elite spaces within the inner city, have shaped a complex pattern of socio-spatial differentiation and residential segregation

    A temporally cyclic growth model of urban spatial morphology in China: evidence from Kunming Metropolis

    Rapid urbanization and complexity of political-economic transition in China has brought about continuous and remarkable changes of urban morphology over the past decades, which were driven by a mixture of spatial, social-economic and institutional forces. Understanding such urban morphological evolution requires new mixed evidences and holistic perspectives. In this paper, it is argued that two dominant types of urban growth in China: low-density expansion and high-density infill might be driven by different forces at different stages. To interpret the processes of urban development, two easy-to-understand morphological indicators: expansion-induced investment density index” (EID) and “infill-induced investment density index” (IID) are defined to measure the investment density per unit of developed land and used to compare the morphological changes between different phases in a long period by integrating spatial and socio-economic data. The temporal variation of these indicators suggests a cyclic growth model (CGM), which means the periodic switch between low density expansion and high-density infill. Using Kunming metropolis as a case study, this paper has confirmed that its urban morphological evolution from 1950-2014 was periodically and reciprocally driven by a set of vis-à-vis dualistic dynamics, in which low-density expansion is led by pro-growth infrastructure oriented public investment, while the high-density infill is activated by collective and rational actions of individual enterprises and their economic behaviors. It is concluded that the confirmed CGM model, together with two morphological indicators, offers a new holistic perspective and method to easily and integrally interpret urban morphological evolution and accordingly has potential theoretical implications for reasonably understanding the urbanisation in China

    Determinants of China's Housing Market: An Empirical Analysis

    China’s housing market has been experiencing significant growth over the last decade and has become one of the government’s key targets for economic growth. Hous- ing policies in regard to urbanization and population control have led to growing inequality. As one of the most important assets in a household’s portfolio, housing plays a role in financial redistribution and the global economy. This paper uses panel analysis and cross-sectional analysis to investigate the forces at work in the Chinese housing market, specifically correlations with price movements. We apply a tested model of housing to the Chinese housing market and use price-to-rent ratio as an effective measure of returns to housing. The results find that in the macroeconomy, the real interest rate is insignificant in determining the housing price-to-rent ratio and growth rates, both GDP and population, are positively correlated with the housing price-to-rent ratio. Additionally, they show that population, a proxy for land share, is of significant importance in determining the price-to-rent ratio, as hypothesized through its effect on housing supply

    DGG: A Novel Framework for Crowd Gathering Detection

    Crowd gathering detection plays an important role in security supervision of public areas. Existing image-processing-based methods are not robust for complex scenes, and deep-learning-based methods for gathering detection mainly focus on the design of the network, which ignores the inner feature of the crowd gathering action. To alleviate such problems, this work proposes a novel framework Detection of Group Gathering (DGG) based on the crowd counting method using deep learning approaches and statistics to detect crowd gathering. The DGG mainly contains three parts, i.e., Detecting Candidate Frame of Gathering (DCFG), Gathering Area Detection (GAD), and Gathering Judgement (GJ). The DCFG is proposed to find the frame index in a video that has the maximum people number based on the crowd counting method. This frame means that the crowd has gathered and the specific gathering area will be detected next. The GAD detects the local area that has the maximum crowd density in a frame with a slide search box. The local area contains the inner feature of the gathering action and represents that the crowd gathering in this local area, which is denoted by grid coordinates in a video frame. Based on the detected results of the DCFG and the GAD, the GJ is proposed to analyze the statistical relationship between the local area and the global area to find the stable pattern for the crowd gathering action. Experiments based on benchmarks show that the proposed DGG has a robust representation of the gathering feature and a high detection accuracy. There is the potential that the DGG can be used in social security and smart city domains

    Tunable Electrical Conductivity of Carbon-Black-Filled Ternary Polymer Blends by Constructing a Hierarchical Structure

    A type of hierarchical structured composite composed of a minor thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) phase spreading at the interface of two major phases polyoxymethylene/polyamide copolymer (POM/COPA) and carbon black (CB) particles selectively localized at the TPU/COPA interface of the tri-continuous blends was fabricated by melt compounding. The hierarchical structure was designed according to predictions and verified by a combination of electron microscopy and solvent extraction technique. The hierarchical structured composites show the dramatically decreased percolation threshold, a reduction of 60% compared to those without TPU where CB is selectively distributed in the COPA phase. The effects of CB contents and TPU on the phase morphology of POM/COPA were investigated, showing the occurrence of the POM/COPA phase inversion from a sea-island to a co-continuous structure beyond the percolation threshold of CB in the presence of TPU.
