    Nonlinear dynamic analysis on maglev train system with flexible guideway and double time-delay feedback control

    In this paper, the dynamic behavior of time-delayed feedback control for maglev train system with double discrete time delays is considered with flexible guideway. Considering the maglev guideway as Beroulli-Euler beam, the mathematical model of maglev system with flexible guideway is constructed. The time delay of the two state feedback signals in the maglev system occurs simultaneously, and the values are different. The present treatment method only considers one single feedback delay, which are insufficiency. Thus, the Hopf bifurcation with double time-delay feedback of maglev train running on the flexible guideway is analyzed considering time-delayed position feedback signal Ï„1 and velocity feedback signal Ï„2. A novel method is presented to develop the double-parametric Hopf bifurcation diagram in relation to Ï„1 and Ï„2. Sufficient numerical simulations are provided to illustrate the complex dynamical behavior of the discrete delays Ï„1 and Ï„2 for maglev system and we verify the obtained theoretical analysis. Finally, the field experiments are carried out to validate the effectiveness of the Hopf bifurcation analytical method preliminarily

    Integrating aerial and street view images for urban land use classification

    Urban land use is key to rational urban planning and management. Traditional land use classification methods rely heavily on domain experts, which is both expensive and inefficient. In this paper, deep neural network-based approaches are presented to label urban land use at pixel level using high-resolution aerial images and ground-level street view images. We use a deep neural network to extract semantic features from sparsely distributed street view images and interpolate them in the spatial domain to match the spatial resolution of the aerial images, which are then fused together through a deep neural network for classifying land use categories. Our methods are tested on a large publicly available aerial and street view images dataset of New York City, and the results show that using aerial images alone can achieve relatively high classification accuracy, the ground-level street view images contain useful information for urban land use classification, and fusing street image features with aerial images can improve classification accuracy. Moreover, we present experimental studies to show that street view images add more values when the resolutions of the aerial images are lower, and we also present case studies to illustrate how street view images provide useful auxiliary information to aerial images to boost performances

    Approximate Solutions for Ideal Dam-Break Sediment-Laden Flows on Uniform Slopes

    Shallow water hydro-sediment-morphodynamic (SHSM) models have been applied increasingly widely in hydraulic engineering and geomorphological studies over the past few decades. Analytical and approximate solutions are usually sought to verify such models and therefore confirm their credibility. Dam-break flows are often evoked because such flows normally feature shock waves and contact discontinuities that warrant refined numerical schemes to solve. While analytical and approximate solutions to clear-water dam-break flows have been available for some time, such solutions are rare for sediment transport in dam-break flows. Here we aim to derive approximate solutions for ideal dam-break sediment-laden flows resulting from the sudden release of a finite volume of frictionless, incompressible water-sediment mixture on a uniform slope. The approximate solutions are presented for three typical sediment transport scenarios, i.e., pure advection, pure sedimentation, and concurrent entrainment and deposition. Although the cases considered in this paper are not real, the approximate solutions derived facilitate suitable benchmark tests for evaluating SHSM models, especially presently when shock waves can be numerically resolved accurately with a suite of finite volume methods, while the accuracy of the numerical solutions of contact discontinuities in sediment transport remains generally poorer

    Uncertainty-inspired Open Set Learning for Retinal Anomaly Identification

    Failure to recognize samples from the classes unseen during training is a major limit of artificial intelligence (AI) in real-world implementation of retinal anomaly classification. To resolve this obstacle, we propose an uncertainty-inspired open-set (UIOS) model which was trained with fundus images of 9 common retinal conditions. Besides the probability of each category, UIOS also calculates an uncertainty score to express its confidence. Our UIOS model with thresholding strategy achieved an F1 score of 99.55%, 97.01% and 91.91% for the internal testing set, external testing set and non-typical testing set, respectively, compared to the F1 score of 92.20%, 80.69% and 64.74% by the standard AI model. Furthermore, UIOS correctly predicted high uncertainty scores, which prompted the need for a manual check, in the datasets of rare retinal diseases, low-quality fundus images, and non-fundus images. This work provides a robust method for real-world screening of retinal anomalies
